    Di-(2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate-Induced Hippocampus-Derived Neural Stem Cells Proliferation

The brain and spinal cord have a limited capacity for self-repair under damaged conditions. One of the best options to overcome these limitations involves the use of phytochemicals as potential therapeutic agents. In this study, we have aimed to investigate the effects of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) on hippocampus-derived neural stem cells (NSCs) proliferation to search phytochemical candidates for possible treatment of neurological diseases using endogenous capacity. In this experimental study, neonatal rat hippocampus-derived NSCs were cultured and treated with various concentrations of DEHP (0, 100, 200, 400 and 600 µM) and Cirsium vulgare (C. vulgare) hydroethanolic extract (0, 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 µg/ml) for 48 hours under in vitro conditions. Cell proliferation rates and quantitative Sox2 gene expression were evaluated using MTT assay and real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). We observed the highest average growth rate in the 400 µM DEHP and 800 µg/ml C. vulgare extract treated groups. Sox2 expression in the DEHP-treated NSCs significantly increased compared to the control group. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/ MS) results demonstrated that the active ingredients that naturally occurred in the C. vulgare hydroethanolic extract were 2-ethyl-1-hexanamine, n-heptacosane, 1-cyclopentanecarboxylic acid, 1-heptadecanamine, 2,6-octadien-1-ol,2,6,10,14,18,22-tetracosahexaene, and DEHP. DEHP profoundly stimulated NSCs proliferation through Sox2 gene overexpression. These results provide and opportunity for further use of the C. vulgure phytochemicals for prevention and/or treatment of neurological diseases via phytochemical mediated-proliferation of endogenous adult NSCs

Abstract Cervical thymic cyst is not a common pathology encountered in either an adult or a child. Our case presentation is of an infant girl with a right cervical soft mass. It was totally resected and histological analysis revealed a thymic cyst. The diagnosis of thymic cyst is not possible prior to histological examination. Therefore, in children the disorder should be considered as a differential diagnosis of each cervical soft tissue mass and evaluation of mediastinum should be done for the presence of thymic tissue

Enriching smart card data with the trip purpose attribute

Planning public transport highly relies on the availability, quantity and quality of travel demand data of passengers. In the last two decades, smart card data has provided the opportunity to create comprehensive travel demand data as a byproduct of a fare-collecting system. One important attribute for the planning is the purpose of the trips, which is missing from the smart card data. This research study proposes and formulates a novel method to infer trip purpose in smart card data. Previous methods either lack the concept of trip chains or did not consider both spatial and temporal perspectives of a trip. Firstly, this method discovers relations between the sequence and temporal attributes of trips with their trip purpose attribute by running a clustering method on a rich travel survey dataset (This study only uses public transit records.) that contains all attributes. Secondly, the discovered clusters are labelled and transferred to the smart card data by calculating the closeness of the trip chain of each individual in the smart card data to the clusters. Thirdly, the proportion of relevant land use types near the destination of each trip is utilized to enhance the previously calculated closeness. The proposed method is implemented on datasets from South East Queensland, Australia. Also, two recently published methods were replicated and run on the same datasets to evaluate the proposed method. The results show improvements in the proposed method compared to the existing methods of the literature

Prediction of phase equilibrium of CO2/cyclic compound binary mixtures using a rigorous modeling approach

Vapor liquid equilibrium (VLE) data has significant role in designing processes which include vapor and liquid in equilibrium. Since it is impractical to measure equilibrium data at any desired temperature and pressure, particularly near critical region, thermodynamic models based on equation of state (EOS) are usually used for VLE estimating. In recent years due to the development of numerical tools like artificial intelligence methods, VLE prediction has been find new alternatives. In the present study a novel method called Least-Squares Support Vector Machine (LSSVM) used for predicting bubble/dew point pressures of binary mixtures containing carbon dioxide (CO2) + cyclic compounds as function of reduced temperature of the system, critical pressure, acentric factor of the cyclic compound, and CO2 composition. A 333 binary equilibrium data points of CO2 and six cyclic compounds within temperature and pressure ranges of 308.15–473.15 K and 0.5–27.71 MPa were used to develop the model. Results show that the proposed model is able to predict VLE data for binary systems containing supercritical or near-critical CO2/cyclic compounds with an acceptable average absolute relative deviation percent (AARD%) of 3.9381% and the coefficient of determination (R2) value of 0.9980. For detection of the probable doubtful experimental data, and applicability of the model, the Leverage statistical approach performed on the data sets. This algorithm showed that the proposed LSSVM model is statistically valid for VLE prediction and the whole phase equilibrium data points are in applicability domain of the model

Differentiation of human adipose-derived stem cells into cardiomyocyte-like cells in fibrin scaffold by a histone deacetylase inhibitor

Abstract Background Human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs) are capable of differentiating into many cells such as cardiac cells. Different types of inducers are used for cardiac cell differentiation, but this question still remains to be investigated, which one is the best. The aim of this paper was to investigate the effect of combination of fibrin scaffold and trichostatin A (TSA), for differentiation of hADSCs into cardiomyocyte-like cells. Methods After approval of characteristics of hADSCs and fibrin scaffold, hADSCs were cultured in fibrin scaffold with 10 µM TSA for 72 h and kept in standard conditions for 4 weeks. QRT-PCR and immunostaining assay were performed for evaluating the expression pattern of special cardiac genes and proteins. Results In particular, our study showed that fibrin scaffold alongside TSA enhanced expression of the selected genes and proteins. Conclusions We concluded that the TSA alone or with fibrin scaffold can lead to the generation of cardiac like cells in a short period of time

    Lupus erythematosus paniculitis

Lupus erythematosus panniculitis is a rare type of chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus which is histopathologically characterized by a lobular panniculitis. We present a 43-year-old woman with an indurated painful plaque on her right flank from 3 years ago. She mentioned a previous blunt trauma to this site. Microscopic examination revealed a predominant lobular panniculitis with lymphoid follicle formation, hyaline fat necrosis, membranocystic changes and mucin deposition. She was treated with oral hydroxychloroquine with moderate improvement. An indurated subcutaneous painful plaque could be the presenting feature of lupus panniculitis and we should evaluate systemic involvement in these patients
