Witch Doctors, Zombies, and Oracles: Rethinking Health in America

    Get PDF
To the extent we can even refer to an American healthcare system, it functions brilliantly ... to make money. The system is designed to reward executives or major shareholders of pharmaceutical & health insurance companies, healthcare facilities, and related entities. With a rapidly aging population, healthcare will soon surpass a fifth of our economy. Of course, the American healthcare system does not function brilliantly when one considers the perspective of patients and over-extended primary care providers. Prices are growing faster than inflation or wages, healthcare is twice as costly as other comparable nations, and one third is a result of waste, fraud, and abuse

Chiral perturbation theory with Wilson-type fermions including a2a^2 effects: Nf=2N_f=2 degenerate case

We have derived the quark mass dependence of mπ2m_{\pi}^2, mAWIm_{\rm AWI} and fπf_{\pi}, using the chiral perturbation theory which includes the a2a^2 effect associated with the explicit chiral symmetry breaking of the Wilson-type fermions, in the case of the Nf=2N_f=2 degenerate quarks. Distinct features of the results are (1) the additive renormalization for the mass parameter mqm_q in the Lagrangian, (2) O(a)O(a) corrections to the chiral log (mqlogmqm_q\log m_q) term, (3) the existence of more singular term, logmq\log m_q, generated by a2a^2 contributions, and (4) the existence of both mqlogmqm_q\log m_q and logmq\log m_q terms in the quark mass from the axial Ward-Takahashi identity, mAWIm_{\rm AWI}. By fitting the mass dependence of mπ2m_\pi^2 and mAWIm_{\rm AWI}, obtained by the CP-PACS collaboration for Nf=2N_f=2 full QCD simulations, we have found that the data are consistently described by the derived formulae. Resumming the most singular terms logmq\log m_q, we have also derived the modified formulae, which show a better control over the next-to-leading order correction.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures (10 eps files), Revtex4, some discussions and references added, the final version to appear in PR

Financial Sector Reform and Its Impact on Investment and Economic Growth: An Econometric Approach

    Get PDF
The financial sector is central to economic development as it serves the role of intermediary by mobilising savings and subsequently allocating credit for productive activities. However, in many developing countries including Pakistan, administered interest rate, domestic credit controls, high reserve requirements, use of captive banking system to finance large budgetary requirements of the government and controls on international capital inflows have remained the main features of the monetary policy. These repressive policies had their repercussions in the form of excess liquidity with the banking system, disintermediation of cash flows, segmentation of financial markets, underdeveloped money and capital markets, etc. [McKinnon (1973) and Shaw (1973)], therefore, argued that low interest rate ceilings unduly restrict the real flow of loanable funds, thus depressing the quantity of productive investment. Financial liberalisation, on the other hand, is defined as policy measures designed to deregulate certain operations of the financial system and transform its structure with a view to achieving a liberalised market oriented system with an appropriate regulatory framework. The financial sector reforms would lead to increase in loanable funds by attracting more household savings to bank deposits due to higher interest rates. This, in turn, would result in greater investment and faster economic growth.

The sawdust of different woods were investigat ed for the cultivation of exotic strain of Pleurotus (flabellatus) djamor (R-22) to find out the efficiency of different nutrients including protein, fat, crude fiber, ash, dry matter and moisture. Among all type of nutrients, protein, fat, cr ude fiber, ash, dry matter and moisture of Pleurotus ostreatus on sawdust of different woods were observed. Protein was observed on cont rol treatment (cotton waste, kikar, mango, mixed sawdust, simbal and kail (21.89), (21.64), (21.34), (21.16), (21.03) and (20.75) % respectively. Fat was observed on control treatment (cotton waste, kikar, mango, mi xed sawdust, simbal and kail (0.80), (0.53), (0 .41), (0.33), (0.24) and (0.11)% respectively. Crude fiber was observed on control treatment (cotton waste, kikar, mango, mixed sawdust, simbal and kail (8.92), (8.45), (8.17), (7.96), (7.70) and (7.32) % respectively. Ash was observ ed on control treatment (cotton waste, kikar, mango, mixed sawdust, simbal and kail (7.65), (6.75), (6 .47), (6.39), (6.33) and (6.23%) respectively. Dry matter was observed on control treatment (cotton waste, kikar, mango, mixed sawdust, simbal and kail (6.47), (6.27), (6.13), (6.01), (5.87) and (5.67) % respectively. Moisture was observed on control treatment (c otton waste, kikar, mango, mixed sawdust, simbal and kail (84.55), (81.20), (79.85), (76.26), (74.35) and (71.14) % respectively. Oyster mushroom showed relatively more contents on control treatment cotton waste as compared to other substrates. The maximum protein, fat, crude fiber, ash, dry matter and moisture contents in Pleurotus (flabellatus) djamor (R-22) was obtained on Kikar sawdust .The lowest contents was obtained on kail sawdust

We present results on the spectrum of B mesons and heavy baryons, using a non-relativistic formulation for the heavy and a clover action for the light quark. We also discuss B meson decay constants and their dependency upon the heavy meson mass.Comment: 4 pages, uuencoded compressed postscript file, contribution to LATTICE 9

Lattice QCD data versus Chiral Perturbation Theory: the case of MπM_\pi

    Get PDF
I present a selection of recent lattice data by major collaborations for the pseudo-Goldstone boson masses in full (Nf=2N_f=2) QCD, where the valence quarks are chosen exactly degenerate with the sea quarks. At least the more chiral points should be consistent with Chiral Perturbation Theory for the latter to be useful in extrapolating to physical masses. Perspectives to reliably determine NLO Gasser-Leutwyler coefficients are discussed.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, ICHEP 2002, v2: one statement clarified, one ref. adde

Hydromagnetic Flow and Heat Transfer of Eyring-Powell Fluid over an Oscillatory Stretching Sheet with Thermal Radiation

    Get PDF
An analysis is carried out to investigate the magnetohydrodynamic flow and heat transfer in an unsteady flow of Eyring-Powell fluid over an oscillatory stretching surface. The radiation effects are also considered in energy equation. The flow is induced due to infinite elastic sheet which is stretched periodically back and forth in its own plane. Finite difference scheme is used to solve dimensionless partial differential equations. The effects of emerging parameters on both velocity and temperature profiles are illustrated through graphs. The results obtained by means of finite difference scheme are compared with earlier studies and found in excellent agreement

Strategies and recommendations for prevention and control of domestic violence against women in Pakistan

    Get PDF
Domestic violence is highly prevalent in Pakistan. This paper proposes the strategies based on literature review, for the prevention and control of domestic violence. The reported causes for domestic violence against women include women\u27s low educational levels, low empowerment, and least opportunities to indulge in political activities; wrong interpretations of religious, traditional and cultural norms in the society; poverty; dowry system; women\u27s suppressed autonomy and males\u27 addiction to alcohol. Through this article, we have attempted to highlight the need to recognize the domestic violence against women as an important issue and to enhance educational and health facilities for the prevention and control of violence with combined awareness programs including non governmental organizations through stake holders. Furthermore, comprehensive laws need to be developed and enforcement against dowry and alcohol abuse is required in low income countries like Pakistan
