The relevant operators are those that close a semi-Lie algebra under commutation with the Hamiltonian. These operators are needed and indeed are the building blocks for performing calculations in the context of the maximum entropy formalism. The Hubbard Hamiltonian and its variants/generalizations continue to dominate the theo-retical modelling of important problems such as high temperature superconductivity.
