    Isolated Sacral Metastasis Mimicking a Chordoma Presenting as a First Manifestation of Thyroid Malignancy: Case Report

    Fifty-nine years old female presented with the clinical manifestations of lumbosacral plexopathy. MR imaging revealed a large destructive pelvic mass of sacral origin, mimicking a sacral chordoma. Histopathological findings are suggestive of follicular variant of papillary carcinoma of thyroid origin. There was no clinically palpable thyroid lesion or any clinical feature suggestive of thyroid dysfunction. This report describes an isolated sacral metastasis of thyroid origin without prior clinical features of thyroid malignancy.     Peritumoral cystic meningioma

    A case of 39 years old male is described who presented with headache, right-sided focal fits and decreased power in the right hand. CT scan brain showed a left fronto-parietal cystic lesion with centrolateral intramural nodule with homogenous enhancement. At surgery, the extra-axial lesion with cyst containing xanthochromic fluid had a well-defined capsule that could easily be separated from the peri-lesional cortical surface. The dural-based nodule with its cyst wall was resected in toto. The histopathology of mural nodule was reported as meningioma while the cyst wall histology revealed meningothelial cells

    Income inequality is one of the critical barriers to growth and development in most of the developing countries including Pakistan. Every third man in Pakistan falls below the poverty line1. Moreover, the budget deficit has also been a serious issue throughout the history of Pakistan‟s economy. The persistent budget deficit is the constant source of increasing poverty and deterioration of income distribution. Since deficit is financed by increasing indirect taxes and money supply, it causes the reduction in purchasing power and leads the masses towards poverty [Arif and Farooq (2011)]. Therefore, it is a dire need of the economy to have a good public policy such that it could reduce budget deficit, alleviate poverty and redistribute income. Malik and Saqib (1985) suggest that the resources of the economy can be distributed equally only through appropriate changes in the tax system.     Effects of lubricated surface in the stagnation point flow of a micropolar fluid

    In this investigation, we have considered a steady, two-dimensional flow of a micropolar fluid towards a stagnation point over a lubricated plate. A power law fluid is utilized for the purpose of lubrication. To derive the slip condition in the present flow situation, continuity of shear stress and velocity has been imposed at the fluid lubricant interface. The set of nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations subject to boundary conditions is solved by a powerful numerical technique called the Keller-box method. Some important flow features have been analyzed and discussed under the influence of slip parameter , material parameter and ratio of micro-rotation to the skin friction parameter . The main purpose of the present article is to analyze the reduction in the shear stress and couple stress effects in the presence of lubrication as compared to the viscous fluid that may be beneficial during polymeric processing

    Multi-state analysis functional models using Bayesian networks

    Multilevel Flow Modeling (MFM) model maps functionality of components in a system through logical interconnections and is effective in predicting success rates of tasks undertaken. However, the output of this model is binary, which is taken at its extrema, i.e., success and failure, while in reality, the operational status of plant components often spans between these end. In this paper, a multi-state model is proposed by adding probabilistic information to the modelling framework. Using a heat exchanger pilot plant as a case study, the MFM model is transformed into its fault tree [1] equivalent to incorporate failure probability information. To facilitate computations, the FT model is transformed into Bayesian Network model, and applied for fault detection and diagnosis problems. The results obtained illustrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method

    Estimation of Synchronization Parameters in AF Cooperative Networks

    In cooperative networks, multiple carrier frequency offsets (MCFOs) and multiple timing offsets (MTOs) originate due to multiple distributed nodes. In this paper, algorithms for joint estimation of these parameters and channels in amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying networks are proposed. A new training model and transceiver structure at the relays for achieving synchronization throughout the network is devised. New exact closed-form expressions for the Cram´er-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) for the multi-parameter estimation problem are derived. An estimation method is proposed for jointly estimating MCFOs, MTOs, and channel gains at the destination based on space-alternating generalized expectation maximization (SAGE) and compared to a computationally-intensive least squares (LS) approach. The proposed estimator’s performance is shown to be close to the CRLB at mid-to-high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) resulting in significant cooperative performance gains in the presence of practical impairments

    Sex ratio, spawning season and the size at maturity of Parapenaeopsis sculptilis (Heller 1862) in the coastal waters of Perak, Peninsular Malaysia

    Parapenaeopsis sculptilis (Heller, 1862) locally referred to as "udang kulit keras" in Malaysia has profound biological, ecological, aquacultural and conservational significance. The reproductive biology of this important penaeid from the coastal waters of Perak, Peninsular Malaysia, was studied during the period between February 2012 to January 2013. Females outnumbered males with a sex ratio of M: F= 1:3 (P < 0.05). Four maturity stages of female gonads viz., immature, maturing, mature and spent stages were distinguished. The first stage of sexual maturity was attained at a length of 9.3 cm, and female P. sculptilis showed a peak gonadosomatic index during the month of April, August and October, indicating that P. sculptilis potentially breeds throughout the year. The findings of this study would greatly contribute towards the understanding of gonadal maturation, spawning season and breeding biology, which could be important for the effective population management of this prawn species

    Characterization of Cu3SbS3 thin films grown by thermally diffusing Cu2S and Sb2S3 layers

    Copper antimony sulphide (Cu3SbS3) with a p-type conductivity and optical band gaps in the range of 1.38 to 1.84 eV is considered to be a promising solar harvesting material with non-toxic and economical elements. In this study, we reported the fabrication of Cu3SbS3 thin films using successive thermal evaporation of Cu2S and Sb2S3 layers followed by annealing in an argon atmosphere at a temperature range of 300-375°C. The structural and optical properties of the as-deposited and annealed films were investigated. The annealed films notably show the crystalline phase of the Cu3SbS3, identified from the X-ray diffraction analysis and endorsed by the Raman analysis as well. Whereas their chemical state of the constituent elements was characterized with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The measured highest resistivity of the annealed film was found to be ~0.2 Ω-cm. Hence, our obtained results for the fabricated Cu3SbS3 thin films bring to light that Cu3SbS3would be a good absorber layer in solar cells due to their low resistivity, a higher value of the optical absorption coefficient (~105 cm-1), the low transmittance (<5%) and an optical direct band gap of 1.6 eV in the visible range of the solar spectrum
