Empirical evidence on inflation and unemployment in the long run

    Get PDF
We examine the relationship between inflation and unemployment in the long run, using quarterly US data from 1952 to 2010. Using a band-pass filter approach, we find strong evidence that a positive relationship exists, where inflation leads unemployment by some 3 to 3 1/2 years, in cycles that last from 8 to 25 or 50 years. Our statistical approach is atheoretical in nature, but provides evidence in accordance with the predictions of Friedman (1977) and the recent New Monetarist model of Berentsen, Menzio, and Wright (2011): the relationship between inflation and unemployment is positive in the long run.Inflation, Unemployment, Long-Run Phillips Curve

NEPTUNIA PLENA (FABACEAE: MIMOSOIDEAE) REDISCOVERED IN TEXAS

On October 17, 1938, Robert Runyon collected a specimen of Neptunia plena from a shallow pond south of Armstrong in Kenedy County, Texas. No subsequent collections from Texas have been reported . It was assumed that it was not a permanent member of our flora. On October 27, 2007, a population of N. plena was found near the same locality. Aquifer thermal energy storage : A well doublet experiment at increased temperatures

This is the published version. Copyright 1983 American Geophysical UnionThe two main objectives of this communication are to present a study of potential advantages and disadvantages of the doublet supply-injection well configuration in an aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) system and to report on aquifer storage problems with injection temperatures in the 80°C range. A 3-month injection-storage-recovery cycle followed by a 7.3-month cycle constituted the main experiment. The injection volumes were 25,402 m3 and 58,063 m3 at average temperatures of 58.5°C and 81°C respectively. Unlikely previous experiments at the Mobile site, no clogging of the injection well due to clay particle swelling, dispersion, and migration was observed. This is attributed to the fact that the supply water used for injection contained a cation concentration equal to or slightly greater than that in the native groundwater. For cycles I and II, the fraction of injected energy recovered in a volume of water equal to the injection volume was 0.56 and 0.45 respectively. Both groundwater temperature and tracer data support the conclusion that this relatively low recovery was due to the detrimental effects of free thermal convection, possibly augmented by longitudinal zones of high permeability. Construction of a partially penetrating recovery well improved recovery efficiency but is not thought to be an adequate solution to thermal stratification. A maximum increase of 1.24 cm in relative land surface elevation was recorded near the end of second cycle injection. The engineering implications of such an elevation change would have to be considered, especially if an ATES system were being designed in an urban environment. A third cycle was started at the Mobile site on April 7, 1982. This final experiment contains a partially penetrating, dual-recovery well system which is expected to maximize energy recovery from a thermally stratified storage aquifer

Nuclear Heat Source for Cryogenic Refrigerators in Space

    Get PDF
To supply the heat input required by space-borne cryogenic refrigerators, a possible design for a reliable Pu-238 radioisotope heat source, based on state-of-the-art technology, is described. The isotope heat source, which makes use of existing fuel elements, would replace electrical heaters powered by solar panels and batteries, without requiring redesign of the refrigerators. The heat source contains all necessary safety features, and also a simple thermal control system to permit refrigerator shut-down for indefinite duration. A system for thermal interfacing with the spacecraft, the booster, and ground support is also described. The isotope heaters are compared with solar-electric heaters for the same application, and found to result in very significant weight and size savings
