Binary Cosmic Strings
The properties of cosmic strings have been investigated in detail for their
implications in early-universe cosmology. Although many variations of the basic
structure have been discovered, with implications for both the microscopic and
macroscopic properties of cosmic strings, the cylindrical symmetry of the
short-distance structure of the string is generally unaffected. In this paper
we describe some mechanisms leading to an asymmetric structure of the string
core, giving the defects a quasi-two-dimensional character. We also begin to
investigate the consequences of this internal structure for the microscopic and
macroscopic physics.Comment: 19 pages; uses harvmac (not included
Open Space – a collaborative process for facilitating Tourism IT partnerships
The success of IT projects depends on the success of the partnerships on which they are based. However past research by the author has identified a significant rate of failure in these partnerships, predominantly due to an overly technical mindset, leading to the question: “how do we ensure that, as technological solutions are implemented within tourism, due consideration is given to human-centred issues?” The tourism partnership literature is explored for additional insights revealing that issues connected with power, participation and normative positions play a major role. The method, Open Space, is investigated for its ability to engage stakeholders in free and open debate. This paper reports on a one-day Open Space event sponsored by two major intermediaries in the UK travel industry who wanted to consult their business partners. Both the running of the event and its results reveal how Open Space has the potential to address some of the weaknesses associated with tourism partnerships
A chiral crystal in cold QCD matter at intermediate densities?
The analogue of Overhauser (particle-hole) pairing in electronic systems
(spin-density waves with non-zero total momentum ) is analyzed in
finite-density QCD for 3 colors and 2 flavors, and compared to the
color-superconducting BCS ground state (particle-particle pairing, =0). The
calculations are based on effective nonperturbative four-fermion interactions
acting in both the scalar diquark as well as the scalar-isoscalar quark-hole
('') channel. Within the Nambu-Gorkov formalism we set up the coupled
channel problem including multiple chiral density wave formation, and evaluate
the resulting gaps and free energies. Employing medium-modified
instanton-induced 't Hooft interactions, as applicable around
GeV (or 4 times nuclear saturation density), we find the 'chiral crystal phase'
to be competitive with the color superconductor.Comment: 14 pages ReVTeX, including 11 ps-/eps-figure
Quark Description of Hadronic Phases
We extend our proposal that major universality classes of hadronic matter can
be understood, and in favorable cases calculated, directly in the microscopic
quark variables, to allow for splitting between strange and light quark masses.
A surprisingly simple but apparently viable picture emerges, featuring
essentially three phases, distinguished by whether strangeness is conserved
(standard nuclear matter), conserved modulo two (hypernuclear matter), or
locked to color (color flavor locking). These are separated by sharp phase
transitions. There is also, potentially, a quark phase matching hadronic
K-condensation. The smallness of the secondary gap in two-flavor color
superconductivity corresponds to the disparity between the primary dynamical
energy scales of QCD and the much smaller energy scales of nuclear physics.Comment: 21 pages, 2 figure
Phases of QCD at High Baryon Density
We review recent work on the phase structure of QCD at very high baryon
density. We introduce the phenomenon of color superconductivity and discuss how
the quark masses and chemical potentials determine the structure of the
superfluid quark phase. We comment on the possibility of kaon condensation at
very high baryon density and study the competition between superfluid, density
wave, and chiral crystal phases at intermediate density.Comment: 15 pages. To appear in the proceedings of the ECT Workshop on Neutron

QCD-like Theories at Finite Baryon and Isospin Density
We use 2-color QCD as a model to study the effects of simultaneous presence
of chemical potentials for isospin charge, , and for baryon number,
. We determine the phase diagrams for 2 and 4 flavor theories using the
method of effective chiral Lagrangians at low densities and weak coupling
perturbation theory at high densities. We determine the values of various
condensates and densities as well as the spectrum of excitations as functions
of and . A similar analysis of QCD with quarks in the adjoint
representation is also presented. Our results can be of relevance for lattice
simulations of these theories. We predict a phase of inhomogeneous condensation
(Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase) in the 2 colour 2 flavor theory, while
we do not expect it the 4 flavor case or in other realizations of QCD with a
positive measure.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figure
QCD at finite isospin density
QCD at finite isospin chemical potential mu_I has no fermion sign problem and
can be studied on the lattice. We solve this theory analytically in two limits:
at low mu_I where chiral perturbation theory is applicable, and at
asymptotically high mu_I where perturbative QCD works. At low isospin density
the ground state is a pion condensate, whereas at high density it is a Fermi
liquid with Cooper pairing. The pairs carry the same quantum numbers as the
pion. This leads us to a conjecture that the transition from hadron to quark
matter is smooth, which passes several tests. Our results imply a nontrivial
phase diagram in the space of temperature and chemical potentials of isospin
and baryon number.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, version to appear in PR
Meson Exchange Effect on Color Superconductivity
We investigate the effects of pion and gluon exchanges on the formation of
two-flavor color superconductivity at moderate density, . The
chiral quark model proposed by Manohar and Georgi containing pions as well as
gluons is employed to show that the pion exchange reduces substantially the
value of the superconducting gap gotten with the gluon exchange only. It turns
out that the pion exchanges produce a repulsion between quark-quark pair in a
spin and isospin singlet state.
We suggest that the phase consisiting of pions, gluons and quarks is one of
the candidates of in-medium QCD phase at moderate density.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, minor correction
Gamow-Teller strength distributions for nuclei in pre-supernova stellar cores
Electron-capture and -decay of nuclei in the core of massive stars
play an important role in the stages leading to a type II supernova explosion.
Nuclei in the f-p shell are particularly important for these reactions in the
post Silicon-burning stage of a presupernova star. In this paper, we
characterise the energy distribution of the Gamow-Teller Giant Resonance (GTGR)
for mid-fp-shell nuclei in terms of a few shape parameters, using data obtained
from high energy, forward scattering (p,n) and (n,p) reactions. The energy of
the GTGR centroid is further generalised as function of nuclear
properties like mass number, isospin and other shell model properties of the
nucleus. Since a large fraction of the GT strength lies in the GTGR region, and
the GTGR is accessible for weak transitions taking place at energies relevant
to the cores of presupernova and collapsing stars, our results are relevant to
the study of important -capture and -decay rates of arbitrary,
neutron-rich, f-p shell nuclei in stellar cores. Using the observed GTGR and
Isobaric Analog States (IAS) energy systematics we compare the coupling
coefficients in the Bohr-Mottelson two particle interaction Hamiltonian for
different regions of the Isotope Table.Comment: Revtex, 28 pages +7 figures (PostScript Figures, uuencoded, filename:

BCS vs Overhauser pairing in dense (2+1)d QCD
We compare the BCS and Overhauser effect as competing mechanisms for the
destabilization of the quark Fermi surface at asymptotically large chemical
potential, for the special case of 2 space and 1 time dimension. We use the
framework of perturbative one-gluon exchange, which dominates the pairing at
. With screening in matter, we show that in the weak coupling
limit the Overhauser effect can compete with the BCS effect only for a
sufficiently large number of colors. Both the BCS and the Overhauser gaps are
of order in Landau gauge.Comment: 10 pages, no figur
