CD34 Expression in the Stromal Cells of Alveolar Adenoma

The alveolar adenoma of the lung is a rare benign tumor characterized by a proliferation of both the alveolar epithelial cells and the mesenchymal septal cells. Immunohistochemically, the epithelial cells stain for cytokeratin (CK) AE1AE3, CK7, thyroid transcription factor 1 (TTF1), and surfactant apoprotein confirming the derivation by the type 2 pneumocytes. The stromal cells are negative for these markers but they show focally smooth muscle and muscle-specific actin positivity. We describe two cases that showed immunohistochemically a CD34 positivity of the mesenchymal septal cells. This aspect has been previously described in a two cases report, but not emphasized by the authors as a distinctive feature of the lesion. We consider this CD34 positivity as a marker of immaturity or stemness of the lesional septal spindle cells, that could be responsible of the different phenotypic and morphological profile of the interstitial cells, that could be, therefore, considered neoplastic and not reactive

Atherogenic dyslipidemia on admission is associated with poorer outcome in people with and without diabetes hospitalized for COVID-19

Identifying metabolic factors associated with critical disease can help to improve management of patients hospitalized for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). High triglycerides and low HDL levels characterize the atherogenic dyslipidemia closely related to insulin resistance and diabetes. We examined associations of atherogenic dyslipidemia detected on admission with outcome of COVID-19 during hospitalization

Building Information Modeling (BIM). Great Misunderstanding or Potential Opportunities for the Design Disciplines?

The BIM universe will undoubtedly arouse great and diversified interests amongst actors involved in the design/building process but also of scholars dealing with representation disciplines. The BIM systems appear in fact particularly suitable to respond to both needs providing on a single platform analytic tool, visualization interfaces, assessment instruments but also a bundle for the representation of reality. And, in addition to that, always taking into account the management of the process in terms of timing that is a key element for a correct handling of any building workflow. Nevertheless, the urgency of optimization of time and resources will drive very rapidly this change achieving, eventually, the real result: an evolution of future generation professionals, more willing and able to cooperate beyond personal skills

Cobalt chloride has beneficial effects across species through a hormetic mechanism

: Severe oxygen and iron deficiencies have evolutionarily conserved detrimental effects, leading to pathologies in mammals and developmental arrest as well as neuromuscular degeneration in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Yet, similar to the beneficial effects of mild hypoxia, non-toxic levels of iron depletion, achieved with the iron chelator bipyridine or through frataxin silencing, extend C. elegans lifespan through hypoxia-like induction of mitophagy. While the positive health outcomes of hypoxia preconditioning are evident, its practical application is rather challenging. Here, we thus test the potential beneficial effects of non-toxic, preconditioning interventions acting on iron instead of oxygen availability. We find that limiting iron availability through the iron competing agent cobalt chloride has evolutionarily conserved dose-dependent beneficial effects: while high doses of cobalt chloride have toxic effects in mammalian cells, iPS-derived neurospheres, and in C. elegans, sub-lethal doses protect against hypoxia- or cobalt chloride-induced death in mammalian cells and extend lifespan and delay age-associated neuromuscular alterations in C. elegans. The beneficial effects of cobalt chloride are accompanied by the activation of protective mitochondrial stress response pathways

The best prostate biopsy sampling system—fusion and systematic biopsy: A single center experience

    No full text
Background: Prostate cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in men. The diagnostic accuracy in prostate cancer can be increased by employing a preliminary multiparametric MRI followed by a fusion-targeted biopsy. Methods: To compare the diagnostic accuracy of fusion-targeted biopsy with the standard systematic biopsy in prostate cancer patients, we enrolled 139 patients on which we performed 139 prostate biopsies consisting of three targeted samples followed by 12 regular systematic samples. Based on histology, we analyzed the diagnostic performance of the two methods. Results: Both methods were equally good at detecting clinically significant cancer (83.3%, 50/60), while systematic biopsy detected more clinically insignificant cancers. However, the best diagnostic performance is obtained by combining the two methods. Conclusion: The two methods are best seen as synergistic, and the addition of fusion biopsy can be used to detect more clinically significant prostate cancers than systematic biopsy alone

    «Figure» e «October»: confronti sulla critica d’arte negli anni ’80
