Dynamics of rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensates in a harmonic plus quartic trap
A two-dimensional rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic
plus quartic trap is expected to have unusual vortex states that do not occur
in a pure harmonic trap. At a critical rotation speed , a central
hole appears in the condensate, and at some faster rotation speed ,
the system undergoes a transition to a giant vortex state with pure
irrotational flow. Using a time-dependent variational analysis, we study the
behavior of an annular condensate with a single concentric ring of vortices.
The transition to a giant vortex state is investigated by comparing the energy
of the two equilibrium states (the ring of vortices and the giant vortex) and
also by studying the dynamical stability of small excitation modes of the ring
of vortices.Comment: 12pages, 4figure
Detection of C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) transcript in the rat heart and immune organs
Previous studies suggested the expression of mRNA, coding for CNP, exclusively in the central nervous system. In the present study, using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique instead of the less sensitive Northern blot hybridization, CNP-specific sequences have also been detected in rat atria and ventricles of the heart as well as in organs of the immune system (thymus, spleen and lymph nodes). Parallel PCR-assays documented ANP-mRNA in these tissues. To verify specificity of the PCR-products, Southern blots have been hybridized with a third internal oligonucleotide and amplification products have been sequenced. The relative level of CNP-mRNA in these tissues was estimated to be in the range of 1-9% of total brain CNP transcripts. The results suggest that the peptide may have a peripheral as well as a central site of action. In light of its pronounced effect on cell proliferation, particular interest should focus on a possible role of CNP in the immune system
The ontology of temperature in nonequilibrium systems
The laws of thermodynamics provide a clear concept of the temperature for an
equilibrium system in the continuum limit. Meanwhile, the equipartition theorem
allows one to make a connection between the ensemble average of the kinetic
energy and the uniform temperature. When a system or its environment is far
from equilibrium, however, such an association does not necessarily apply. In
small systems, the regression hypothesis may not even apply. Herein, we show
that in small nonequilibrium systems, the regression hypothesis still holds
though with a generalized definition of the temperature. The latter must now be
defined for each such manifestation.Comment: J.Chem.Phys. (in press); 23 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

Computational Study of the Structure and Thermodynamic Properties of Ammonium Chloride Clusters Using a Parallel J-Walking Approach
The thermodynamic and structural properties of (NHCl) clusters,
n=3-10 are studied. Using the method of simulated annealing, the geometries of
several isomers for each cluster size are examined. Jump-walking Monte Carlo
simulations are then used to compute the constant-volume heat capacity for each
cluster size over a wide temperature range. To carry out these simulations a
new parallel algorithm is developed using the Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM)
software package. Features of the cluster potential energy surfaces, such as
energy differences among isomers and rotational barriers of the ammonium ions,
are found to play important roles in determining the shape of the heat capacity
curves.Comment: Journal of Chemical Physics, accepted for publicatio
