    Perfect Anomalous Reflection with a Binary Huygens' Metasurface

    In this paper we propose a new metasurface that is able to reflect a known incoming electromagnetic wave into an arbitrary direction, with perfect power efficiency. This seemingly simple task, which we hereafter call perfect anomalous reflection, is actually highly non-trivial due to the differing wave impedances and complex interference between the incident and reflected waves. Heretofore, proposed metasurfaces which achieve perfect anomalous reflection require complicated, deeply subwavelength and/or multilayer element structures which allow them to couple to and from leaky and/or evanescent waves. In contrast, we demonstrate that using a Binary Huygens' Metasurface (BHM) --- a passive and lossless metasurface with only two cells per period --- perfect anomalous reflection can be achieved over a wide angular and frequency range. Through simulations and experiments at 24 GHz, we show that a properly designed BHM can anomalously reflect an incident electromagnetic wave from θi=50\theta_i = 50^\circ to θr=22.5\theta_r = -22.5^\circ, with perfect power efficiency to within experimental precision

    The Molecular Evolution of Animal Reproductive Tract Proteins: What Have We Learned from Mating-System Comparisons?

    Postcopulatory sexual selection is thought to drive the rapid evolution of reproductive tract genes in many animals. Recently, a number of studies have sought to test this hypothesis by examining the effects of mating system variation on the evolutionary rates of reproductive tract genes. Perhaps surprisingly, there is relatively little evidence that reproductive proteins evolve more rapidly in species subject to strong postcopulatory sexual selection. This emerging trend may suggest that other processes, such as host-pathogen interactions, are the main engines of rapid reproductive gene evolution. I suggest that such a conclusion is as yet unwarranted; instead, I propose that more rigorous analytical techniques, as well as multigene and population-based approaches, are required for a full understanding of the consequences of mating system variation for the evolution of reproductive tract genes

    The idea behind the help facility discussed is relatively simple. It is made unique by the fact that it is written in Ada and uses aspects of the language which make information retrieval rapid and simple. Specifically, the DIRECT IO facility allows for random access into the help files. It is necessary to discuss the advantages of random access over sequential access. The mere fact that the program in written in Ada implies a saving in terms of lines of code. This introduces the possibility of eventually adapting the program to run at the microcomputer level, a major consideration . Additionally, since the program uses only standard Ada generics, it is portable to other systems. This is another aspect which must always be taken into consideration in writting any software package in the modern day world of computer programming

    Angular distributions in the radiative decays of the 3D3^3D_3 state of charmonium originating from polarized pˉp\bar{p}p collisions

    Using the helicity formalism, we calculate the combined angular distribution function of the two gamma photons (γ1\gamma_1 and γ2\gamma_2) and the electron (ee^-) in the triple cascade process pˉp3D33P2+γ1(ψ+γ2)+γ1(e+e+)+γ2+γ1\bar{p}p\rightarrow{}^3D_3\rightarrow{}^3P_2+\gamma_1\rightarrow(\psi+\gamma_2) +\gamma_1 \rightarrow (e^- + e^+) +\gamma_2 +\gamma_1, when pˉ\bar{p} and pp are arbitrarily polarized. We also derive six different partially integrated angular distribution functions which give the angular distributions of one or two particles in the final state. Our results show that by measuring the two-particle angular distribution of γ1\gamma_1 and γ2\gamma_2 and that of γ2\gamma_2 and ee^-, one can determine the relative magnitudes as well as the relative phases of all the helicity amplitudes in the two charmonium radiative transitions 3D33P2+γ1{}^3D_3\rightarrow{}^3P_2+\gamma_1 and 3P2ψ+γ2^3P_2\rightarrow \psi+\gamma_2.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1311.464
