LARGE EXTRANODAL NON HODGKIN'S LYMPHOMA OF THE PARAPHARYNGEAL SPACE

    Get PDF
Of all head and neck tumors, 0.5% to 0.8% of them are localized in the parapharyngeal space. Non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas in this site are extremely rare. There are described in literature as either isolated cases or small series of tumors of that space. We are showing a case of a younger man presented with the recent facial nerve paralysis, hearing loss, otalgia and on the examination seen bulged right side of the soft palate and medialization of the pharyngeal wall. The biopsy was performed transorally. The pathohistology finding described a large B cell non-Hodgkin ́s lymphoma. Usually, the parapharyngeal tumors are benign and the surgery is the treatment of choice. In this case patientunderwent chemotherapy. We point out, although rare, extranodal non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas are possible pathological findings in the head and neck. Because of different treatment it is of great importance to know when we deal with this kind of pathology.

Through-Thickness Reinforcement and Repair of Carbon Fiber Based Honeycomb Structures Under Flexure and Tension of Adhesively Bonded Joints

Repair and reinforcement of composite honeycomb structures is an area of concern as higher demands are being placed on high strength, lightweight structural materials, such as carbon fiber reinforced plastics and corresponding honeycomb structures. A common issue with these structures is when a delamination in the facesheet may form and spread, leading to a failure scenario. An investigation of adding a through thickness reinforcement (TTR) to these structures at the sample level that undergo four-point-bending, tension, and joining methods is conducted throughout this thesis. The embedding of pultruded carbon fiber rods is found to be an ideal addition to composite honeycomb structures, not only in terms of reinforcement but also for repair and damage isolation. Facesheet thickness is found to play and important role in the effectiveness of TTR in four-point-bending. Adhesively bonded joints are tested to failure and the addition of defects and TTR are used to further analyze the potential failures of double lap joints in composite structures and how TTR may help to minimize damage in those scenarios

On the Periphery: Women, Science and Caribbean Natural History

Abstract Source guides and catalogues attest to the fact that Caribbean natural history has inspired curiosity and study for centuries. If we confine ourselves to published treatises, however, it appears that women participated very little in exploring and documenting the region's natural environment. A very different picture emerges, however, when we turn to women's letters, travelogues, and drawings, where they recorded their observations of Caribbean flora, fauna, rocks, and fossils and through which they shared their findings with the wider community. Focusing on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, this paper, "On the Periphery: Women, Science and Caribbean Natural History" recovers these forgotten efforts of women who lived in and visited the Caribbean and examines them in the larger context of women working on the periphery of European science

There is a continuing discourse on the engendering of history of the Caribbean. As a part of that discourse, leading historians such as Bridget Brereton and Blanca Silvestrini suggest that the process should include the text and testimony of women. In this way they can include women’s perception of their society in the study of Caribbean History. For the English-speaking Caribbean, a number of their letters written to friends, relatives and business associates have survived. Among the surviving sources are the published correspondences of four women associated with four English colonies in the region. Their letters provide useful indicators of how women felt and acted in the past

Overview of neurosurgical capacity in St. Lucia

When we talk about the most scenic Caribbean islands, St. Lucia is one of those islands that certainly come into our mind. It is a beautiful tourist destination and the place of post-volcanic paradise on earth. However, just like many remote Caribbean islands, St. Lucians (name for local population) used to have its own difficulties of obtaining on demand basic neurosurgical services in their homeland. This beautiful Caribbean island, socioeconomically falls in the same category as most low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) and unfortunately echoes the same unmet surgical and anaesthesia needs as the rest of them

Background: Opiate maintenance treatment (OMT) is being offered for rehabilitation purposes in the Norwegian society, including Norwegian prisons. The OMT program has been a controversial issue because of fear of the diversion of OMT medications and development of black markets for prescription drugs such as buprenorphine and methadone. The OTM program is seeking normalization through rehabilitation, and is therefore forced to observe their patients during the intake of buprenorphine and methadone. In this paper I’ll be focusing on the social reconstruction of OMT as a rehabilitation programme in a Norwegian prison, while trying to understand the potential of such prescription drugs in the prison context. Methods: This paper reports on an ethnographic study of prison-based OMT programme in a closed Norwegian prison. The data includes qualitative interviews with 5 prisoners. Results: The prison-based OMT programme was characterized by strict and repressive control to prevent the diversion of buprenorphine. My findings reveal diversion of buprenorphine in the Norwegian prison. The argument for the diversion of buprenorphine was legitimized by the excessive and repressive control, which was perceived as illegitimate and unfair by all of the patients in the OMT programme. The prisoners characterized buprenorphine as the new prison drug, and the strict control and discipline inside the prison demonstrated the collective resistance towards the perceived unfairness of the OMT programme. Conclusion: The paper demonstrates that normalization through a control-dominated approach to prison-based OMT may have the opposite effect of what is intended
