This paper provides the various ways that libraries assist in national development. These include the provision of educational, political, social, economic and health information. The barriers hindering these provisions such as illiteracy, lack of trained personnel, resources, poor distribution of libraries and financial constraints are mentioned. An analytical study of masters dissertations on the Balme Library, University of Ghana, Legon

    No full text
This paper analyses masters dissertations written on the Balme Library, University of Ghana by students of the Department of Information Studies, University of Ghana from 1998-2005, with a view to ascertaining how the management of Balme Library has implemented the recommendations from the dissertations. The analysis takes the form of the type and year of dissertation, subject of dissertation, and whether written by Balme Library staff or not. The findings indicate that most of the recommendations in the dissertations have not been implemented by the library. One of the reasons for this is that the Balme Library did not even know of the findings and recommendations. Some suggestions have been made to overcome this problem, including the need for staff of the Balme Library to supervise some of such dissertations or, failing this, and/or the need for the management of the library to, at least, be made aware of studies and recommendations relating to the Balme Library. Knowledge – sharing in academic libraries: A study of the Balme library, University of Ghana, Legon

    No full text
This paper examines the extent to which the staff of the Balme Library, University of Ghana, Legon share knowledge among themselves, so as to enhance efficiency and productivity. A total number of forty-six members of staff of the library were sampled, with forty completing the questionnaire). Interviews were also conducted with the University Librarian, the Deputy Librarian, and Heads of Department. The findings indicate among othersthat although the staff agreed that sharing knowledge and experience can benefit colleagues of the library, there is no formalized avenue for sharing knowledge in the library. The library also has no policy which demands that knowledge must be shared among staff in the library. The effect of this is the lack of awareness of some activities which are happening within thelibrary. The study recommends among others, the creation of specific knowledge management policies and strategies which would include the publication of library newsletters and the creation of a database of staff publications
