Rak dwunastnicy należy do najrzadszych nowotworów przewodu pokarmowego. W każdym przypadku podejrzenia pierwotnego nowotworu dwunastnicy należy rozważyć możliwość, czy jest to nowotwór wychodzący z innego narządu, z wtórnym zajęciem dwunastnicy. Autorzy niniejszej pracy przedstawiają przypadek raka zagięcia wątrobowego jelita grubego z przetoką okrężniczo-dwunastniczą i naciekaniem dwunastnicy, przebiegającego pod maską raka dwunastnicy.Duodenal cancers are the most rare neoplasms of the digestive duct. Every time when we suspect primary duodenal neoplasm, we should consider the possibility, that in fact it is a neoplasm of a different origin site, secondarily infiltrating the duodenum. We present a case of cancer of the hepatic flexure of the colon, accompanied by a colo-duodenal fistula, infiltrating the duodenum, which could be misdiagnosed as duodenal cancer

    Allergen immunotherapy in dogs

    No full text
The article presents current knowledge about allergen immunotherapy (AIT), in dogs, including the mechanism of action, indications, protocols used and efficacy of this treatment option. Currently, the sole indication for AIT in dogs is canine atopic dermatitis. AIT is the only etiological treatment available for this disease and has been proved to be both safe and effective. However, more studies regarding allergen specific immunotherapy are welcome to provide reliable guidance on the optimal dosing of allergens and profoundly evaluate its efficacy

Sustainable development and waste management in EU28 countries

    No full text
Sustainable development depends, among other things, on how much waste a particular society generates and how it handles it. The paper relies on Eurostat data on municipal waste management in EU28 countries. Three diagnostic variables were selected, and then taxonomic development meters (Polish: TMD) were estimated and interpreted. The research has shown that in the European Union, which is sensitive to the issues of environmental protection and sustainable development, waste management models adopted by the different member states are in many cases far from ideal. The aim of this review and empirical research was to evaluate the situation of municipal waste management. According to the authors, the positions assigned to the different countries based on TMD meter can be considered as objective measures of social responsibility for the present and future generations - which is a key aspect of sustainable development

Gain of Function (GOF) Mutant p53 in Cancer—Current Therapeutic Approaches

    No full text
Continuous development of personalized treatments is undoubtedly beneficial for oncogenic patients’ comfort and survival rate. Mutant TP53 is associated with a worse prognosis due to the occurrence of metastases, increased chemoresistance, and tumor growth. Currently, numerous compounds capable of p53 reactivation or the destabilization of mutant p53 are being investigated. Several of them, APR-246, COTI-2, SAHA, and PEITC, were approved for clinical trials. This review focuses on these novel therapeutic opportunities, their mechanisms of action, and their significance for potential medical application

Nutritional Therapy in Persons Suffering from Psoriasis

    No full text
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. Immunological, genetic, and environmental factors, including diet, play a part in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Metabolic syndrome or its components are frequent co-morbidities in persons with psoriasis. A change of eating habits can improve the quality of life of patients by relieving skin lesions and by reducing the risk of other diseases. A low-energy diet is recommended for patients with excess body weight. Persons suffering from psoriasis should limit the intake of saturated fatty acids and replace them with polyunsaturated fatty acids from the omega-3 family, which have an anti-inflammatory effect. In diet therapy for persons with psoriasis, the introduction of antioxidants such as vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids, flavonoids, and selenium is extremely important. Vitamin D supplementation is also recommended. Some authors suggest that alternative diets have a positive effect on the course of psoriasis. These diets include: a gluten-free diet, a vegetarian diet, and a Mediterranean diet. Diet therapy for patients with psoriasis should also be tailored to pharmacological treatment. For instance, folic acid supplementation is introduced in persons taking methotrexate. The purpose of this paper is to discuss in detail the nutritional recommendations for persons with psoriasis

Nutritional and Non-Nutritional Predictors of Low Spot Urinary Creatinine Concentration in Patients with Heart Failure

Low spot urinary creatinine concentration (SUCR) is a marker of muscle wasting and clinical outcome. The risk factors for low SUCR in heart failure (HF) remain poorly understood. We explored the risk factors for low SUCR related to poor outcomes. In 721 HF patients (age: 52.3 ± 11 years, female: 14%, NYHA: 2.7 ± 0.7) SUCR and Dexa body composition scans were performed. BMI prior HF-onset, weight loss, and appendicular muscle mass were obtained. Each patient was classified as malnutrition or normal by GLIM criteria and three other biochemical indices (CONUT, PNI, and GRNI). Sarcopenia index (SI) as creatinine to cystatin C ratio was also calculated. Within 1 year, 80 (11.1%) patients died. In ROC curve we identified a SUCR value of 0.628 g/L as optimally discriminating surviving from dead. In low SUCR group more advanced HF, higher weight loss and catabolic components of weight trajectory (CCWT), more frequent under-nutrition by GLIM, and lower SI were observed. In multivariate analysis the independent predictors of low SUCR were SI, CCWT, and GNRI score. In conclusion: the risk of low SUCR was associated with a worse outcome. Low SUCR was associated with greater catabolism and sarcopenia but not with biochemical indices of malnutrition
