    Nodes of the Gap Function and Anomalies in Thermodynamic Properties of Superfluid 3^3He

    Departures of thermodynamic properties of three-dimensional superfluid 3^3He from the predictions of BCS theory are analyzed. Attention is focused on deviations of the ratios Δ(T=0)/Tc\Delta(T=0)/T_c and [Cs(Tc)Cn(Tc)]/Cn(Tc)[C_s(T_c)-C_n(T_c)]/C_n(T_c) from their BCS values, where Δ(T=0)\Delta(T=0) is the pairing gap at zero temperature, TcT_c is the critical temperature, and CsC_s and CnC_n are the superfluid and normal specific heats. We attribute these deviations to the momentum dependence of the gap function Δ(p)\Delta(p), which becomes well pronounced when this function has a pair of nodes lying on either side of the Fermi surface. We demonstrate that such a situation arises if the P-wave pairing interaction V(p1,p2)V(p_1,p_2), evaluated at the Fermi surface, has a sign opposite to that anticipated in BCS theory. Taking account of the momentum structure of the gap function, we derive a closed relation between the two ratios that contains no adjustable parameters and agrees with the experimental data.     Cosmic-ray strangelets in the Earth's atmosphere

    If strange quark matter is stable in small lumps, we expect to find such lumps, called ``strangelets'', on Earth due to a steady flux in cosmic rays. Following recent astrophysical models, we predict the strangelet flux at the top of the atmosphere, and trace the strangelets' behavior in atmospheric chemistry and circulation. We show that several strangelet species may have large abundances in the atmosphere; that they should respond favorably to laboratory-scale preconcentration techniques; and that they present promising targets for mass spectroscopy experiments.Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures, revtex

    A terminal assessment of stages theory : introducing a dynamic states approach to entrepreneurship

    Stages of Growth models were the most frequent theoretical approach to understanding entrepreneurial business growth from 1962 to 2006; they built on the growth imperative and developmental models of that time. An analysis of the universe of such models (N=104) published in the management literature shows no consensus on basic constructs of the approach, nor is there any empirical confirmations of stages theory. However, by changing two propositions of the stages models, a new dynamic states approach is derived. The dynamic states approach has far greater explanatory power than its precursor, and is compatible with leading edge research in entrepreneurship

    African-specific improvement of a polygenic hazard score for age at diagnosis of prostate cancer

    Polygenic hazard score (PHS) models are associated with age at diagnosis of prostate cancer. Our model developed in Europeans (PHS46) showed reduced performance in men with African genetic ancestry. We used a cross-validated search to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that might improve performance in this population. Anonymized genotypic data were obtained from the PRACTICAL consortium for 6253 men with African genetic ancestry. Ten iterations of a 10-fold cross-validation search were conducted to select SNPs that would be included in the final PHS46+African model. The coefficients of PHS46+African were estimated in a Cox proportional hazards framework using age at diagnosis as the dependent variable and PHS46, and selected SNPs as predictors. The performance of PHS46 and PHS46+African was compared using the same cross-validated approach. Three SNPs (rs76229939, rs74421890 and rs5013678) were selected for inclusion in PHS46+African. All three SNPs are located on chromosome 8q24. PHS46+African showed substantial improvements in all performance metrics measured, including a 75% increase in the relative hazard of those in the upper 20% compared to the bottom 20% (2.47-4.34) and a 20% reduction in the relative hazard of those in the bottom 20% compared to the middle 40% (0.65-0.53). In conclusion, we identified three SNPs that substantially improved the association of PHS46 with age at diagnosis of prostate cancer in men with African genetic ancestry to levels comparable to Europeans

    A Germline Variant at 8q24 Contributes to Familial Clustering of Prostate Cancer in Men of African Ancestry

    Although men of African ancestry have a high risk of prostate cancer (PCa), no genes or mutations have been identified that contribute to familial clustering of PCa in this population. We investigated whether the African ancestry–specific PCa risk variant at 8q24, rs72725854, is enriched in men with a PCa family history in 9052 cases, 143 cases from high-risk families, and 8595 controls of African ancestry. We found the risk allele to be significantly associated with earlier age at diagnosis, more aggressive disease, and enriched in men with a PCa family history (32% of high-risk familial cases carried the variant vs 23% of cases without a family history and 12% of controls). For cases with two or more first-degree relatives with PCa who had at least one family member diagnosed at age <60 yr, the odds ratios for TA heterozygotes and TT homozygotes were 3.92 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.13–7.22) and 33.41 (95% CI = 10.86–102.84), respectively. Among men with a PCa family history, the absolute risk by age 60 yr reached 21% (95% CI = 17–25%) for TA heterozygotes and 38% (95% CI = 13–65%) for TT homozygotes. We estimate that in men of African ancestry, rs72725854 accounts for 32% of the total familial risk explained by all known PCa risk variants. Patient summary: We found that rs72725854, an African ancestry–specific risk variant, is more common in men with a family history of prostate cancer and in those diagnosed with prostate cancer at younger ages.     Toward a kinship perspective on entrepreneurship

    This paper develops a theoretical framework for analyzing the role of kinship in entrepreneurship. Kinship, we argue, is a key-ingredient of the social and cultural environment of entrepreneurs, and therefore essential in understanding how and why entrepreneurship happens. Building on qualitative research conducted among Cambodian Chinese entrepreneurs in Phnom Penh, we define kinship as interpersonal ties grounded in relatedness. We distinguish different categories of kinship ties that involve different levels of relatedness and are used for different aspects of entrepreneurship, and we identify different types of reciprocity and trust as the sociocultural dynamics that buttress kinship involvement in entrepreneurship

    Untangling the effects of overexploration and overexploitation on organizational performance: The moderating role of environmental dynamism

    Because a firm's optimal knowledge search behavior is determined by unique firm and industry conditions, organizational performance should be contingent oil the degree to which a firm's actual level of knowledge search deviates from the optimal level. It is thus hypothesized that deviation from the optimal search, in the form of either overexploitation or overexploration, is detrimental to organizational performance. Furthermore, the negative effect of search deviation oil organizational performance varies with environmental dynamism: that is, overexploitation is expected to become more harmful. whereas overexploration becomes less so with all increase in environmental dynamism. The empirical analyses yield results consistent with these arguments. Implications for research and practice are correspondingly discussed

    This 68 page publication (NE-77) was originally published by the Natural Resource, Agriculture, and Engineering Service (NRAES, previously known as the Northeast Regional Agricultural Engineering Service), a multi-university program in the Northeast US disbanded in 2011. Plant and Life Sciences Publishing (PALS) was subsequently formed to manage the NRAES catalog. Ceasing operations in 2018, PALS was a program of the Department of Horticulture in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Cornell University. PALS assisted university faculty in publishing, marketing and distributing books for small farmers, gardeners, land owners, workshops, college courses, and consumers.The opportunity to accelerate or control plant growth is both exciting and useful. However, the choice of structure and equipment used can be confusing. Everything from cold frames to greenhouses is available. Before making a choice you should decide what type of gardening you want to do. If you are a plant lover with very little time for gardening, an area or room in the home can become an aesthetic, low cost greenhouse for indoor plants. Many gardeners find that fluorescent light fixtures are an inexpensive addition that can be used to light indoor plants or to start seedlings. A cold frame may be a good choice if you want to start a few seedlings in the spring. Heating cable can be added to the cold frame for better control of the plant environment. Another option some people prefer is an inexpensive plastic covered greenhouse to shelter seedlings, in part because it is pleasant to be inside protected from the blustery, rainy days of spring. A heater and ventilation fan makes this same greenhouse useful for a longer season and for a greater variety of plants. The plastic covered greenhouse in kit form or owner designed also provides a moderately priced way to learn how to greenhouse garden and if you like it. But, for many gardeners, only the glass greenhouse is acceptable. Certainly the glass greenhouse can be a permanent, attractive addition to the home landscape. Inside, the clear glass gives a feeling of open space and makes greenhouse gardening a pleasant experience. On the other hand, a glass greenhouse and its associated equipment does cost several thousand dollars, which is too expensive for many people. This booklet can help you choose a plant growing structure to fit your gardening needs. A number of plans for plant growing structures and equipment are also included. Information on plant culture is not included, but can be obtained by contacting your state's land grant university or your local cooperative extension office.
