AX J0049.4-7323 - a close look at a neutron star interacting with a circumstellar disk
Detailed evidence on the system AX J0049.4-7323 is presented here to show how
the passage of the neutron star in the binary system disrupts the circumstellar
disk of the mass donor Be star. A similar effect is noted in three other
Be/X-ray binary systems. Together the observational data should provide

Key dating features for timber-framed dwellings in Surrey

MORE OpenChoice articles are open access and distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License 3.0.The main component of the Surrey Dendrochronology Project is the accurate dating of 177 ‘dwellings’, nearly all by tree-ring analysis. The dates are used to establish date ranges for 52 ‘key features’, which cover many aspects of timber-framing from building type to details of carpentry. It is shown that changes of method and fashion were in many cases surprisingly rapid, almost abrupt in historical terms. Previous dating criteria for timber-framed dwellings in the county have been refined and new criteria introduced. Using Rasch analysis to identify uncharacteristic responses to undergraduate assessments
Rasch Analysis is a statistical technique that is commonly used to analyse both test data and Likert survey data, to construct and evaluate question item banks, and to evaluate change in longitudinal studies. In this article, we introduce the dichotomous Rasch model, briefly discussing its assumptions. Then, using data collected in an example-generation task with undergraduate mathematics students, we use Rasch analysis to (1) rank the task questions and consider this ranking in relation to students’ conceptions and (2) identify those students whose responses misfit the model (e.g. students who score highly but get easier questions wrong). We conclude that because these responses misfit the Rasch model they are worthy of further (qualitative) examination, for instance to aid the discovery and classification of students’ misconceptions relative to formal theory
A major outburst from the X-ray binary RX J0520.5-6932
We report on the analysis of 8 years of MAssive Compact Halo Objects (MACHO)
data for the source RX J0520.5-6932. A regular period of 24.4 days has been
confirmed, however this is manifest almost entirely in the red part of the
spectrum. A major outburst, lasting approximately 200 days, was observed which
increased the apparent brightness of the object by approximately 0.15
magnitudes without significantly altering its V-R colour index. This outburst
was also seen in X-ray data. The evidence from this analysis points to the
identification of this object as a Be/X-ray binary with a periodically variable
circumstellar disk and a very early optical counterpart.Comment: Paper has been accepted by MNRA
A Bayesian approach to the analysis of time symmetry in light curves: Reconsidering Scorpius X-1 occultations
We present a new approach to the analysis of time symmetry in light curves,
such as those in the x-ray at the center of the Scorpius X-1 occultation
debate. Our method uses a new parameterization for such events (the bilogistic
event profile) and provides a clear, physically relevant characterization of
each event's key features. We also demonstrate a Markov Chain Monte Carlo
algorithm to carry out this analysis, including a novel independence chain
configuration for the estimation of each event's location in the light curve.
These tools are applied to the Scorpius X-1 light curves presented in Chang et
al. (2007), providing additional evidence based on the time series that the

Possible Cosmological Implications of the Quark-Hadron Phase Transition
We study the quark-hadron phase transition within an effective model of QCD,
and find that in a reasonable range of the main parameters of the model, bodies
with quark content between and 10 solar masses can have been formed
in the early universe. In addition, we show that a significant amount of
entropy is released during the transition. This may imply the existence of a
higher baryon number density than what is usually expected at temperatures
above the QCD scale. The cosmological QCD transition may then provide a natural
way for decreasing the high baryon asymmetry created by an Affleck-Dine like
mechanism down to the value required by primordial nucleosynthesis.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX, 5 Postscript figures included. Submitted to Journal

Identification of the Microlens in Event MACHO-LMC-20
We report on the identification of the lens responsible for microlensing
event MACHO-LMC-20. As part of a \textit{Spitzer}/IRAC program conducting
mid-infrared follow-up of the MACHO Large Magellanic Cloud microlensing fields,
we discovered a significant flux excess at the position of the source star for
this event. These data, in combination with high resolution near-infrared
\textit{Magellan}/PANIC data has allowed us to classify the lens as an early M
dwarf in the thick disk of the Milky Way, at a distance of kpc. This
is only the second microlens to have been identified, the first also being a M
dwarf star in the disk. Together, these two events are still consistent with
the expected frequency of nearby stars in the Milky Way thin and thick disks

Relics of the Cosmological QCD Phase Transition
The abundance and size distribution of quark nuggets (QN), formed a few
microseconds after the big bang due to first order QCD phase transition in the
early universe, has been estimated. It appears that stable QNs could be a
viable candidate for cosmological dark matter. The evolution of baryon
inhomogeneity due to evaporated (unstable) QNs are also examined.Comment: To appear in Physical Review
Apparent Clustering of Intermediate-redshift Galaxies as a Probe of Dark Energy
We show the apparent redshift-space clustering of galaxies in redshift range
of 0.2--0.4 provides surprisingly useful constraints on dark energy component
in the universe, because of the right balance between the density of objects
and the survey depth. We apply Fisher matrix analysis to the the Luminous Red
Galaxies (LRGs) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), as a concrete example.
Possible degeneracies in the evolution of the equation of state (EOS) and the

The binary period and outburst behaviour of the SMC X-ray binary pulsar system SXP504
A probable binary period has been detected in the optical counterpart to the
X-ray source CXOU J005455.6-724510 = RX J0054.9-7245 = AXJ0054.8-7244 = SXP504
in the Small Magellanic Cloud. This source was detected by Chandra on 04 Jul
2002 and subsequently observed by XMM-Newton on 18 Dec 2003. The source is
coincident with an Optical Gravitational Lensing (OGLE) object in the
lightcurves of which several optical outburst peaks are visible at ~ 268 day
intervals. Timing analysis shows a period of 268.6 +/- 0.1 days at > 99%
significance. Archival Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) data for the 504s
pulse-period has revealed detections which correspond closely with predicted or
actual peaks in the optical data. The relationship between this orbital period
and the pulse period of 504s is within the normal variance found in the Corbet
