Smart Kitchens for People with Cognitive Impairments: A Qualitative Study of Design Requirements
Individuals with cognitive impairments currently leverage extensive human resources during their transitions from assisted living to independent living. In Western Europe, many government-supported volunteer organizations provide sheltered living facilities; supervised environments in which people with cognitive impairments collaboratively learn daily living skills. In this paper, we describe communal cooking practices in sheltered living facilities and identify opportunities for supporting these with interactive technology to reduce volunteer workload. We conducted two contextual observations of twelve people with cognitive impairments cooking in sheltered living facilities and supplemented this data through interviews with four employees and volunteers who supervise them. Through thematic analysis, we identified four themes to inform design requirements for communal cooking activities: Work organization, community, supervision, and practicalities. Based on these, we present five design implications for assistive systems in kitchens for people with cognitive deficiencies
His+ reversions Caused in Salmonella typhimurium by different types of ionizing radiation
The yield of his+ reversions in the Ames Salmonella tester strain TA2638 has been determined for 60Co γ rays, 140 kV X rays, 5.4 keV characteristic X rays, 2.2 MeV protons, 3.1 MeV α particles, and 18 MeV/U Fe ions. Inactivation studies were performed with the same radiations. For both mutation and inactivation, the maximum effectiveness per unit absorbed dose was obtained for the characteristic X rays, which have a dose averaged linear energy transfer (LET) of roughly 10 keV/μm. The ratio of the effectiveness of this radiation to γ rays was 2 for inactivation and about 1.4 for the his+ reversion. For both end points the effectiveness decreases substantially at high LET, i.e., for the α particles and the Fe ions. The composition of the bottom and the top agar was the one recommended by Maron and Ames [Mutat. Res. 113, 173-215 (1983)] for application in chemical mutagenicity tests. The experiments with the less penetrating radiations differed from the usual protocol by utilization of a technique of plating the bacteria on the surface of the top agar. As in an earlier study [Roos et al., Radiat. Res. 104, 102-108 (1985)] greatly enhanced yields of mutations, relative to the spontaneous reversion rate, were obtained in these experiments by performing the irradiations 6 h after plating, which differs from the conventional procedure to irradiate the bacteria shortly after plating
U(1) Mediation of Flux Supersymmetry Breaking
We study the mediation of supersymmetry breaking triggered by background
fluxes in Type II string compactifications with N=1 supersymmetry. The
mediation arises due to an U(1) vector multiplet coupling to both a hidden
supersymmetry breaking flux sector and a visible D-brane sector. The required
internal manifolds can be constructed by non-Kaehler resolutions of singular
Calabi-Yau manifolds. The effective action encoding the U(1) coupling is then
determined in terms of the global topological properties of the internal space.
We investigate suitable local geometries for the hidden and visible sector in
detail. This includes a systematic study of orientifold symmetries of del Pezzo
surfaces realized in compact geometries after geometric transition. We
construct compact examples admitting the key properties to realize flux
supersymmetry breaking and U(1) mediation. Their toric realization allows us to
analyze the geometry of curve classes and confirm the topological connection
between the hidden and visible sector.Comment: 63 pages, 4 figure

Wormhole Cosmology and the Horizon Problem
We construct an explicit class of dynamic lorentzian wormholes connecting
Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetimes. These wormholes can allow two-way
transmission of signals between spatially separated regions of spacetime and
could permit such regions to come into thermal contact. The cosmology of a
network of early Universe wormholes is discussed.Comment: 13 pages, in RevTe
