    Considerations on a revision of the quality factor

    A modified analytical expression is proposed for the revised quality factor that has been suggested by a liaison group of ICRP and ICRU. With this modification one obtains, for sparsely ionizing radiation, a quality factor which is proportional to the dose average of lineal energy, y. It is shown that the proposed relation between the quality factor and lineal energy can be translated into a largely equivalent dependence on LET. The choice between the reference parameters LET or y is therefore a secondary problem in an impending revision of the quality factor

    To innovate, employees need to develop novel ideas and coordinate with each other to turn these ideas into better products and services. Work outcomes provide signals about employees' abilities to the labor market, and therefore career concerns arise. These can both be 'good' (enhancing incentives for effort in developing ideas) and 'bad' (preventing voluntary coordination). Our model shows how the firm designs its explicit incentive system and organizes work processes to take these conflicting forces into account.     Holmström’s (1982/99) career concerns model has become an important workhorse for the analysis of agency issues in many fields. The underlying signal jamming argument requires players to use information in a Bayesian way – which may or may not reasonably approximate real-life decision makers’ behavior. Testing this theory with field data is difficult since typically little is known about the information that individuals base their decisions on, and this explains the dearth of empirical studies. We provide experimental evidence that the signal jamming mechanism works in a laboratory setting.     An Economic Analysis of the Fiscal Policy Framework in the EMU

    This paper intends to provide an economic analysis of the European Monetary Union (EMU). The focus will be on examining the present fiscal policy framework in the EMU. It will be argued that the enforcement of the current framework is weak and has led to excessive deficits in the Eurozone. Measures to strengthen the framework and restore fiscal discipline and sustainable debt levels in the Eurozone will be analysed. It is submitted that the enforcement of the present fiscal framework and fiscal discipline can be strengthened through Eurobonds that are issued jointly by all members of the Eurozone. In order to provide for an effective issuance mechanism a limited form of coordination would be needed that would require minor amendments to existing institutions

    We obtain the renormalized equations of motion for matter and semi-classical gravity in an inhomogeneous space-time. We use the functional Schrodinger picture and a simple Gaussian approximation to analyze the time evolution of the λϕ4\lambda\phi^4 model, and we establish the renormalizability of this non-perturbative approximation. We also show that the energy-momentum tensor in this approximation is finite once we consider the usual mass and coupling constant renormalizations, without the need of further geometrical counter-terms.Comment: 22 page

    Unsupervised vector-based classification of single-molecule charge transport data

    The stochastic nature of single-molecule charge transport measurements requires collection of large data sets to capture the full complexity of a molecular system. Data analysis is then guided by certain expectations, for example, a plateau feature in the tunnelling current distance trace, and the molecular conductance extracted from suitable histogram analysis. However, differences in molecular conformation or electrode contact geometry, the number of molecules in the junction or dynamic effects may lead to very different molecular signatures. Since their manifestation is a priori unknown, an unsupervised classification algorithm, making no prior assumptions regarding the data is clearly desirable. Here we present such an approach based on multivariate pattern analysis and apply it to simulated and experimental single-molecule charge transport data. We demonstrate how different event shapes are clearly separated using this algorithm and how statistics about different event classes can be extracted, when conventional methods of analysis fail

    We present a novel method for calculating the fundamental gap. To this end, reduced-density-matrix-functional theory is generalized to fractional particle number. For each fixed particle number, MM, the total energy is minimized with respect to the natural orbitals and their occupation numbers. This leads to a function, EtotME_{\mathrm{tot}}^M, whose derivative with respect to the particle number has a discontinuity identical to the gap. In contrast to density functional theory, the energy minimum is generally not a stationary point of the total-energy functional. Numerical results, presented for alkali atoms, the LiH molecule, the periodic one-dimensional LiH chain, and solid Ne, are in excellent agreement with CI calculations and/or experimental data.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, version as publishe
