    Vorticity cutoff in nonlinear photonic crystals

    Using group theory arguments, we demonstrate that, unlike in homogeneous media, no symmetric vortices of arbitrary order can be generated in two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear systems possessing a discrete-point symmetry. The only condition needed is that the non-linearity term exclusively depends on the modulus of the field. In the particular case of 2D periodic systems, such as nonlinear photonic crystals or Bose-Einstein condensates in periodic potentials, it is shown that the realization of discrete symmetry forbids the existence of symmetric vortex solutions with vorticity higher than two.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures; minor changes in address and reference

    Amortised resource analysis with separation logic

    Type-based amortised resource analysis following Hofmann and Jost—where resources are associated with individual elements of data structures and doled out to the programmer under a linear typing discipline—have been successful in providing concrete resource bounds for functional programs, with good support for inference. In this work we translate the idea of amortised resource analysis to imperative languages by embedding a logic of resources, based on Bunched Implications, within Separation Logic. The Separation Logic component allows us to assert the presence and shape of mutable data structures on the heap, while the resource component allows us to state the resources associated with each member of the structure. We present the logic on a small imperative language with procedures and mutable heap, based on Java bytecode. We have formalised the logic within the Coq proof assistant and extracted a certified verification condition generator. We demonstrate the logic on some examples, including proving termination of in-place list reversal on lists with cyclic tails

    A Geometrical Test of the Cosmological Energy Contents Using the Lyman-alpha Forest

    In this Letter we explore a version of the test of cosmological geometry proposed by Alcock and Paczynski (1979), using observations of the Lyman-alpha forest in the spectra of close quasar pairs. By comparing the correlations in absorption in one quasar spectrum with correlations between the spectra of neighboring quasars one can determine the relation of the redshift distance scale to the angle distance scale at the redshift of the absorbers, z24z \sim 2 - 4. Since this relationship depends on the parameters of the cosmological model, these parameters may be determined using the Lyman-alpha forest. While this test is relatively insensitive to the density parameter Ωm\Omega_m in a dust-dominated universe, it is more sensitive to the presence of a matter component with large negative pressure (such as a cosmological constant Λ\Lambda) and its equation of state. With only 25 pairs of quasar spectra at angular separations 0.520.5' - 2', one can discriminate between an Ωm=0.3\Omega_m = 0.3 open universe (Λ=0\Lambda=0) and an Ωm=0.3\Omega_m = 0.3 flat (Λ\Lambda-dominated) universe at the 4σ4-\sigma level. The S/N can be enhanced by considering quasar pairs at smaller angular separations, but requires proper modeling of nonlinear redshift space distortions.     On the monotonicity of scalar curvature in classical and quantum information geometry

    We study the statistical monotonicity of the scalar curvature for the alpha-geometries on the simplex of probability vectors. From the results obtained and from numerical data we are led to some conjectures about quantum alpha-geometries and Wigner-Yanase-Dyson information. Finally we show that this last conjecture implies the truth of the Petz conjecture about the monotonicity of the scalar curvature of the Bogoliubov-Kubo-Mori monotone metric.Comment: 20 pages, 2 .eps figures; (v2) section 2 rewritten, typos correcte

This article was published by an American popular mass media, The New Yorker. The main goal of this research is to uncover the hidden opinion that it is unable to emerge an ambiguous interpretation. The implicitness is analysed by using Potts's (2005) theory of Conventional Implicature. The domains used are Nominal Appositive and Supplementary Relative. In order to see the relationship between the implication and the ideological effect of mass media, a critical discourse analysis is applied as well.     The study aimed to determine the effect of Sauropus androgynus powder on the growth of broiler chickens which could be seen from the growth of a commercial piece of carcass weight, skin and flesh and bone comparisons, with the gained a better meat weight compared with rations without use cinnamon leaf meal. The material used in this study were unsexed broiler chickens aged 14 days of 100 individuals with an average weight of 595.6 ± 143 grams, which was produced by a commercial hatchery in Semarang. The study used a completely randomized design with 4 treatments (T0= 0% sauropus androgynus flour in 100% ration, T1= 3%, T2= 6%, T3= 9%) and 5 replications. Based on the results of this study, Sauropus androgynus powder had no effect on the growth of the chest, thigh and wing, skin and meat bone ratio

    I list several strong requirements for what I would consider a sensible interpretation of quantum mechanics and I discuss two simple theorems. One, as far as I know, is new; the other was only noted a few years ago. Both have important implications for such a sensible interpretation. My talk will not clear everything up; indeed, you may conclude that it has not cleared anything up.     Discovery of an optical counterpart to the hyperluminous X-ray source in ESO 243-49

    The existence of black holes of masses ~ 10^2-10^5 Msun has important implications for the formation and evolution of star clusters and supermassive black holes. One of the strongest candidates to date is the hyperluminous X-ray source HLX1, possibly located in the S0-a galaxy ESO243-49, but the lack of an identifiable optical counterpart had hampered its interpretation. Using the Magellan telescope, we have discovered an unresolved optical source with R = (23.80 +/- 0.25) mag and V = (24.5 +/- 0.3) mag within HLX1's positional error circle. This implies an average X-ray/optical flux ratio ~ 500. Taking the same distance as ESO243-49, we obtain an intrinsic brightness M_R = (-11.0 +/- 0.3) mag, comparable to that of a massive globular cluster. Alternatively, the optical source is consistent with a main-sequence M star in the Galactic halo (for example an M4.4 star at ~ 2.5 kpc). We also examined the properties of ESO243-49 by combining Swift/UVOT observations with stellar population modelling. We found that the overall emission is dominated by a ~5 Gyr old stellar population, but the UV emission at ~2000 Ang is mostly due to ongoing star-formation at a rate of ~ 0.03 Msun/yr. The UV emission is more intense (at least a 9-sigma enhancement above the mean) North East of the nucleus, in the same quadrant as HLX1. With the combined optical and X-ray measurements, we put constraints on the nature of HLX1. We rule out a foreground star and a background AGN. Two alternative scenarios are still viable. HLX1 could be an accreting intermediate-mass black hole in a star cluster, which may itself be the stripped nucleus of a dwarf galaxy that passed through ESO243-49, an event which might have caused the current episode of star formation. Or, it could be a neutron star in the Galactic halo, accreting from an M4-M5 donor star.Comment: 7 pages, accepted by MNRAS.     Spin-Spin Interactions in Gauge Theory of Gravity, Violation of Weak Equivalence Principle and New Classical Test of General Relativity

    For a long time, it is generally believed that spin-spin interactions can only exist in a theory where Lorentz symmetry is gauged, and a theory with spin-spin interactions is not perturbatively renormalizable. But this is not true. By studying the motion of a spinning particle in gravitational field, it is found that there exist spin-spin interactions in gauge theory of gravity. Its mechanism is that a spinning particle will generate gravitomagnetic field in space-time, and this gravitomagnetic field will interact with the spin of another particle, which will cause spin-spin interactions. So, spin-spin interactions are transmitted by gravitational field. The form of spin-spin interactions in post Newtonian approximations is deduced. This result can also be deduced from the Papapetrou equation. This kind of interactions will not affect the renormalizability of the theory. The spin-spin interactions will violate the weak equivalence principle, and the violation effects are detectable. An experiment is proposed to detect the effects of the violation of the weak equivalence principle.Comment: 17 pages, no figur
