X-ray Localization of the Globular Cluster G1 with XMM-Newton
We present an accurate X-ray position of the massive globular cluster G1 by
using XMM-Newton and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The X-ray emission of G1
has been detected recently with XMM-Newton. There are two possibilities for the
origin of the X-ray emission. It can be either due to accretion of the central
intermediate-mass black hole, or by ordinary low-mass X-ray binaries. The
precise location of the X-ray emission might distinguish between these two
scenarios. By refining the astrometry of the XMM-Newton and HST data, we
reduced the XMM-Newton error circle to 1.5". Despite the smaller error circle,
the precision is not sufficient to distinguish an intermediate-mass black hole
and luminous low-mass X-ray binaries. This result, however, suggests that
future Chandra observations may reveal the origin of the X-ray emission.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; accepted for publication in Ap
Bose-Einstein condensation in complex networks
The evolution of many complex systems, including the world wide web, business
and citation networks is encoded in the dynamic web describing the interactions
between the system's constituents. Despite their irreversible and
non-equilibrium nature these networks follow Bose statistics and can undergo
Bose-Einstein condensation. Addressing the dynamical properties of these
non-equilibrium systems within the framework of equilibrium quantum gases
predicts that the 'first-mover-advantage', 'fit-get-rich' and
'winner-takes-all' phenomena observed in competitive systems are
thermodynamically distinct phases of the underlying evolving networks
Average distance in growing trees
Two kinds of evolving trees are considered here: the exponential trees, where
subsequent nodes are linked to old nodes without any preference, and the
Barab\'asi--Albert scale-free networks, where the probability of linking to a
node is proportional to the number of its pre-existing links. In both cases,
new nodes are linked to nodes. Average node-node distance is
calculated numerically in evolving trees as dependent on the number of nodes
. The results for not less than a thousand are averaged over a thousand
of growing trees. The results on the mean node-node distance for large
can be approximated by for the exponential trees, and
for the scale-free trees, where the are constant. We
derive also iterative equations for and its dispersion for the exponential

Structure and shaping processes within the extended atmospheres of AGB stars
We present recent studies using the near-infrared instrument AMBER of the VLT
Interferometer (VLTI) to investigate the structure and shaping processes within
the extended atmosphere of AGB stars. Spectrally resolved near-infrared AMBER
observations of the Mira variable S Ori have revealed wavelength-dependent
apparent angular sizes. These data were successfully compared to dynamic model
atmospheres, which predict wavelength-dependent radii because of geometrically
extended molecular layers. Most recently, AMBER closure phase measurements of
several AGB stars have also revealed wavelength-dependent deviations from 0/180
deg., indicating deviations from point symmetry. The variation of closure phase
with wavelength indicates a complex non-spherical stratification of the
extended atmosphere, and may reveal whether observed asymmetries are located
near the photosphere or in the outer molecular layers. Concurrent observations
of SiO masers located within the extended molecular layers provide us with
additional information on the morphology, conditions, and kinematics of this
shell. These observations promise to provide us with new important insights
into the shaping processes at work during the AGB phase. With improved imaging
capabilities at the VLTI, we expect to extend the successful story of imaging
studies of planetary nebulae to the photosphere and extended outer atmosphere

Avalanche-Induced Current Enhancement in Semiconducting Carbon Nanotubes
Semiconducting carbon nanotubes under high electric field stress (~10 V/um)
display a striking, exponential current increase due to avalanche generation of
free electrons and holes. Unlike in other materials, the avalanche process in
such 1D quantum wires involves access to the third sub-band, is insensitive to
temperature, but strongly dependent on diameter ~exp(-1/d^2). Comparison with a
theoretical model yields a novel approach to obtain the inelastic optical
phonon emission length, L_OP,ems ~ 15d nm. The combined results underscore the
importance of multi-band transport in 1D molecular wires
Nonuniversal power law scaling in the probability distribution of scientific citations
We develop a model for the distribution of scientific citations. The model
involves a dual mechanism: in the direct mechanism, the author of a new paper
finds an old paper A and cites it. In the indirect mechanism, the author of a
new paper finds an old paper A only via the reference list of a newer
intermediary paper B, which has previously cited A. By comparison to citation
databases, we find that papers having few citations are cited mainly by the
direct mechanism. Papers already having many citations ('classics') are cited
mainly by the indirect mechanism. The indirect mechanism gives a power-law
tail. The 'tipping point' at which a paper becomes a classic is about 21
citations for papers published in the Institute for Scientific Information
(ISI) Web of Science database in 1981, 29 for Physical Review D papers
published from 1975-1994, and 39 for all publications from a list of high
h-index chemists assembled in 2007. The power-law exponent is not universal.
Individuals who are highly cited have a systematically smaller exponent than

Recrystallization of epitaxial GaN under indentation
We report recrystallization of epitaxial (epi-) GaN(0001) film under
indentation.Hardness value is measured close to 10 GPa, using a Berkovich
indenter. Pop-in burst in the loading line indicates nucleation of dislocations
setting in plastic motion of lattice atoms under stress field for the
recrystallization process. Micro-Raman studies are used to identify the
recrystallization process. Raman area mapping indicates the crystallized
region. Phonon mode corresponding to E2(high) close to 570 cm-1 in the as-grown
epi-GaN is redshifted to stress free value close to 567 cm-1 in the indented
region. Evolution of A1(TO) and E1(TO) phonon modes are also reported to
