    Using Insights from Psychology and Language to Improve How People Reason with Description Logics

    Inspired by insights from theories of human reasoning and language, we propose additions to the Manchester OWL Syntax to improve comprehensibility. These additions cover: functional and inverse functional properties, negated conjunction, the definition of exceptions, and existential and universal restrictions. By means of an empirical study, we demonstrate the effectiveness of a number of these additions, in particular: the use of solely to clarify the uniqueness of the object in a functional property; the replacement of and with intersection in conjunction, which was particularly beneficial in negated conjunction; the use of except as a substitute for and not; and the replacement of some with including and only with noneOrOnly, which helped in certain situations to clarify the nature of these restrictions

    African American and European American Therapists’ Experiences of Addressing Race in Cross-Racial Psychotherapy Dyads

    Using Consensual Qualitative Research, 12 licensed psychologists’ overall experiences addressing race in psychotherapy were investigated, as were their experiences addressing race in a specific cross-racial therapy dyad. Results indicated that only African American psychologists reported routinely addressing race with clients of color or when race was part of a client’s presenting concern. European American psychologists indicated that they would address race if clients raised the topic, and some reported that they did not normally address race with racially different clients. When discussing a specific cross-racial dyad, African American therapists more often than European American therapists addressed race because they perceived client discomfort. Only European American therapists reported feeling uncomfortable addressing race, but therapists of both races perceived that such discussions had positive effects

    Age-Size Structure of Red Grouper, (Epinephelus morlo), from the Eastern Gulf of Mexico

    Sagittal otoliths from 534 red grouper, Eplnephelus morlo, were collected from recreational and commercial fisheries of the eastern Gulf of Mexico in 1979-1981 (236 fish) and 1991-1992 (298 fish). Age estimations for the two collections were made In 1991-1992 from the surface and transverse sections of these otoliths. Also, estimates of back-calculated size at age (using the final annulus present at time of capture following Lea\u27s (1910) method were made for these collections. Red grouper were larger in size at capture at age and back-calculated size at age in 1991-1992 than in 1979-1981. The respective von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: 1979·81 L∞ = 78.9, K = 0.1778, t0 = 0.82591991·92 L∞ = 92.6, K = 0.1588, t0 = 0.9323 where L∞ Is mean maximum attainable total length In centimeters, K Is growth coefficient, and t0 Is hypothetical age in years at which fish would have zero length

    Electrospun Hybrid Organic/Inorganic Semiconductor Schottky Nanodiode

    We report on a simple method to fabricate, under ambient conditions and within seconds, Schottky nanodiodes using electrospun polyaniline nanofibers and an inorganic n-doped semiconductor. In addition to being a rectifier, the advantage of our design is the complete exposure of the rectifying nanojunction to the surrounding environment, making them attractive candidates in the potential fabrication of low power, supersensitive, and rapid response sensors as well. The diode parameters were calculated assuming the standard thermionic emission model of a Schottky junction, and the use of this junction as a gas sensor was examined

    Carcinoma of the gallbladder is a relatively rare malignancy which is difficult to diagnose. The advent of improved imaging methods and the expansion of interventional radiology however, combined with advances in surgical technique, has produced a change in attitude towards this tumour. The available world literature since 1960 has been reviewed and is presented in this article. However, whilst the outlook for diagnosis and treatment is improving, clearly the association with cholelithiasis (between 45% and 100%), is a cause for concern particularly with the advent of treatments (lithotripsy, percutaneous gallstone extraction) which leave gall bladder mucosa and residual fragments of stone in situ

    Shakedown analysis for rolling and sliding contact problems

    There is a range of problems where repeated rolling or sliding contact occurs. For such problems shakedown and limit analyses provides significant advantages over other forms of analysis when a global understanding of deformation behaviour is required. In this paper, a recently developed numerical method. Ponter and Engelhardt (2000) and Chen and Ponter (2001), for 3-D shakedown analyses is used to solve the rolling and sliding point contact problem previously considered by Ponter, Hearle and Johnson (1985) for a moving Herzian contact, with friction, over a half space. The method is an upper bound programming method, the Linear Matching Method, which provides a sequence of reducing upper bounds that converges to the least upper bound associated with a finite element mesh and may be implemented within a standard commercial finite element code. The solutions given in Ponter, Hearle and Johnson (1985) for circular contacts are reproduced and extended to the case when the frictional contact stresses are at an angle to the direction of travel. Solutions for the case where the contact region is elliptic are also given

    Asymmetric three-beam binary optic grating

    Binary and diffractive optical components are finding many applications in optical systems and integrated optical devices. A recent application required the development of a two-dimensional diffraction grating to perform an asymmetric, three-beam fanout. In this paper, techniques are presented for the design of arbitrary fanout grating devices. Modeling and optimization processes are demonstrated for the three-beam grating. The counter-intuitive results of the initial design are discussed, and experimental data verifying performance are presented
