The study was carried out to compare the performance of wood hive types and plywood hive types in three different vegetation types between June 2018 and May 2020 in Akure South local Government of Ondo State, Nigeria. A total of eighteen (18) Kenyan Top Bar hives made from Danta, Gmelina and plywood were constructed at six (6) each per wood types. Two (2) each of Danta, Gmelina and Plywood hives were installed in three locations: Natural Forest, Plantation forest and cocoa farmland. The rate of colonization of each hive was evaluated at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months after installation in the field. The results revealed that plywood hive type was not colonized in the natural forest throughout the period of study while Danta and Gmelina each recorded 50% colonization at the end of the experiment. In plantation forest, each of the Plywood and Gmelina hives recorded 50% colonization at 24 months after installation while bees in Danta hives absconded before 24th months after installation. In cocoa farmland, Gmelina recorded 100% colonization at 24 months, Danta recorded 50% colonization at 24 months and plywood accounted for 100% colonization at 24 months after installation. An improvement was recorded in the colonization performance at 12,18, 24 month after installation of hives. Plywood hives installed in the cocoa farmland and plantation accounted for higher colonization percentage than natural forest

Genetic analysis of mode of inheritance of seed yield and its components in tropical soybean genotypes

The decision related to efficient breeding methods depends largely on the understanding of the type of gene action controlling the expression of the characters to be selected. The objective of this study was to estimate the gene action controlling yield and components in soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill). The study involved six basic soybean generations (P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2) of two crosses, i.e. cross I (TGx1987-62F × TGx1830-20E) and cross II (TGx1987-10F × TGx1740-2F), at the Research farm of the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture, IITA, Ibadan. Data were subjected to generation mean analysis to determine gene actions and interactions, using Hayman model. The results obtained from the individual scaling test A, B, C indicated that the simple additive-dominance model was inadequate to reveal the inheritance of the gene governing most traits. Non-allelic gene interaction was crucial in the inheritance of most studied traits. The Hayman six-parameter genetic model demonstrated that the signs of [h] and [l] were contrasting for most of the traits; suggesting duplicate epistasis. In fact, the effect of dominance was important and significant in the genetic control of most of the traits studied. Therefore, improvement of soybean seed yield and its related characters need intensive selection and should be delayed until later generations. &nbsp

Magnitudes and Effects of Radon Emission from Vitellaria Paradoxa Used for Charcoal Production in Atisbo Local Government, Oyo State

Radon is a chemical element with atomic number 86 on the periodic table. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as a decay product of radium. Its most stable isotope, 222Rn, has a half-life of 3.8 days. It is the only gas under normal conditions that has radioactive isotopes and is considered a health hazard due to its radioactivity. This research project investigated the effect and magnitude of radon emission from Vitellaria paradoxa used for charcoal production in Atisbo local government area of Oyo state. The study area is open woodland vegetation similar to derived savanna ecological zone. An oral interview was conducted on charcoal producers as a pilot study. Radon concentration measurements were carried out in three (3) charcoal production sites at the study area. At each location RAD7 was used to probe 0.6m beneath the soil. The collected data were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the means separated  using Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The concentration in air at L1S40 and L1S30 are not significantly different from each other with the value of 2125.0 and 1947.0 respectively and the radon concentration in soil at L1S0, L1S10 and L1S20 are not significantly different from one another(p<0.05) at Kona Owo. The radon concentration in the soil at all distance L2S0, L2S10, L2S20, L2S30, L2S40 with the value of 2822, 4803, 4140, 3112, 5210 are not significantly different from one another (p<0.05) where L2S40 with 5210 is having the highest value of radon and L2S0 is having low in the soil at Oje Owode. The experiment showed that during the production of charcoal, more radon is emitted to both the air and soil when it is compared to the amount of radon emitted by Vitellaria paradoxa atvthe point of burn. It is recommended that the charcoal workers should wear appropriate protective clothes to protect them from radon emission. Development of a Context-Aware Publish/Subscribe Information System for Public Health Service Delivery

    Get PDF
Publish/Subscribe is a messaging paradigm where senders (publishers) of messages are not programmed to send theirmessages to specific receivers (subscribers). Rather, published messages are characterized into classes, without knowledge ofwhat (if any) subscribers there may be. Subscribers express interest in one or more classes, and only receive messages thatare of interest, without knowledge of what (if any) publishers there are. This paradigm helps to solve the problem of dataredundancy, ensuring that only the required information gets to the end user. Public health is concerned more with improvingthe health of a population through prevention rather than healing individual patients. This is why the dissemination ofrelevant information on healthcare is a vital key to achieving the cardinal objective of Public Health. At present, most Public health information systems are largely dependent on the Internet. This however poses a seriouschallenge in developing nations where occurrence of major diseases are high and the cost of internet is also high as well. Inthis paper, a Context-Aware model for Public health Service delivery was developed and implemented via aPublish/Subscribe Information System. The implementation was done on the .NET Platform. The eGranary was incorporatedinto the model to eliminate the cost of Internet. A mobile Subscriber module was also developed to enable users with mobiledevices access the system. Keywords: Context, Context-Awareness, Publish/Subscribe, Service, Public Healt

Development and characterization of biodiesel from shea nut butter

A b s t r a c t. Shea nut butter was extracted from shea nut by cold press method and was investigated as feedstock for the production of biodiesel. Biodiesel yield was used to verify the optimization, while density and viscosity were chosen to serve as an indicator for the effectiveness and completeness of the ester conversion process. Based on the amount of shea butter used, the final product yield obtained was 94.55% mass and the percentage conversion of FFA in shea butter to biodiesel was 92.3% using a methanol/oil ratio of 6:1 and 1.0% mass KOH at 60 min and 55°C, respectively. The important properties of the biodiesel (density, kinematic viscosity, cloud point, pour point, cetane number, neutralization number, iodine value, methyl ester content and high heating value) were compared to those of ASTM and EN standards for biodiesel. The comparison shows that the shea butter methyl ester could be used as an alternative to diesel
