    The use of documentary sources for reconstructing flood chronologies on the Amalfi rocky coast (southern Italy)

    Documentary source materials are essential for retrospective reconstruction of flood events occurring in past centuries. This paper presents methods of research and archiving of historical data from the 16th century to the present. The quality and completeness of the various original sources were evaluated and carefully analysed in their historical context, to avoid serious mistakes. Systematic investigation of about 3000 documents, mainly found in national State Archives and libraries, allows us to identify and localize at least 106 flood events occurring along the Amalfi coast (southern Italy) for five centuries between the years 1500 and 2000. The collected data provide useful details on flood dynamics, size of flooded areas, flood duration, damage level, number of victims and induced geological effects. When available in sufficient quantity, the flood data allow determination of very useful parameters such as the severity class, to identify large floods and their recurrence interval

    Unsupervised Geochemical Analysis of the Eruptive Products of Ischia, Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei

    This work aimed to study geochemical data, composed of major and trace elements describing volcanic rocks collected from the Campanian active volcanoes of Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei and Ischia Island. The data were analyzed through the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) unsupervised neural net. SOM is able to group the input data into clusters according to their intrinsic similarities without using any information derived from previous geochemical-petrological considerations. The net was trained on a dataset of 276 geochemical patterns of which 96 belonged to Ischia, 94 to Vesuvius and 86 to Campi Flegrei volcanoes. Two investigations were carried out. The first one aimed to cluster geochemical data mainly characterizing the type of volcanic rocks of the three volcanic areas. The SOM clustering well grouped the oldest volcanic products of Ischia, Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei identifying a similar behaviour for the rocks emplaced in the oldest activity periods (>19 ka), and showing their different evolution over time. In the second test, devoted to inferring information on the magmatic source, the ratios of significant trace elements and K2O/Na2O have been used as input data. The SOM results highlighted a high degree of affinity between the geochemical element ratios of Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei that were separated from the products of Ischia. This result was also evidenced through isotope ratios by using traditional two-dimensional diagrams

    Altered expression of integrins in RSV-transformed chick epiphyseal chondrocytes

    Chondrocytes have been shown to express both in vivo and in vitro a number of integrins of the beta1-, beta3- and beta5-subfamilies (Biorheology 37 (2000) 109). Normal and v-Src-transformed chick epiphyseal chondrocytes (CEC) display different adhesion properties. While normal CEC with time in culture tends to increase their adhesion to the substrate by organizing focal adhesions and actin stress fibers, v-Src-transformed chondrocytes display a refractile morphology and disorganization of actin cytoskeleton. We wondered whether the reduced adhesion and spreading of v-Src-transformed chondrocytes could be ascribed to changes in integrin expression and/or function. Integrin expression by normal CEC is studied and compared to v-Src-transformed chick chondrocytes, using monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies to integrins alpha- and beta-chains. We show the presence of alpha1-, alpha3-, alphav-, alpha6-, beta1- and beta3-chains on CEC, with very low levels of alpha2- and alpha5-chains. Alphav chain associates with multiple beta subunits in normal and transformed chondrocytes. With the exception of alpha1- and alpha2-chains, the levels of the integrin chains analyzed are higher in transformed chondrocytes as compared with normal chondrocytes. In spite of the increased levels of integrin expression, transformed chondrocytes exhibit loss of focal adhesion and actin stress fibers and low adhesion activity on several extracellular matrix constituents. These observations raise the possibility that, in addition to its effects on global pattern of integrin expression, v-Src can influence integrin function in chondrocytes

    Genicular artery embolization for treatment of knee osteoarthritis pain: Systematic review and meta-analysis

    Objective: Genicular artery embolization (GAE) is a novel, minimally invasive procedure for treatment of knee osteoarthritis (OA). This meta-analysis investigated the safety and effectiveness of this procedure. Design: Outcomes of this systematic review with meta-analysis were technical success, knee pain visual analog scale (VAS; 0–100 scale), WOMAC Total Score (0–100 scale), retreatment rate, and adverse events. Continuous outcomes were calculated as the weighted mean difference (WMD) versus baseline. Minimal clinically important difference (MCID) and substantial clinical benefit (SCB) rates were estimated in Monte Carlo simulations. Rates of total knee replacement and repeat GAE were calculated using life-table methods. Results: In 10 groups (9 studies; 270 patients; 339 knees), GAE technical success was 99.7%. Over 12 months, the WMD ranged from −34 to −39 at each follow-up for VAS score and −28 to −34 for WOMAC Total score (all p ​< ​0.001). At 12 months, 78% met the MCID for VAS score; 92% met the MCID for WOMAC Total score, and 78% met the SCB for WOMAC Total score. Higher baseline knee pain severity was associated with greater improvements in knee pain. Over 2 years, 5.2% of patients underwent total knee replacement and 8.3% received repeat GAE. Adverse events were minor, with transient skin discoloration as the most common (11.6%). Conclusions: Limited evidence suggests that GAE is a safe procedure that confers improvement in knee OA symptoms at established MCID thresholds. Patients with greater knee pain severity may be more responsive to GAE
