Multi-Finishing of Polyester and Polyester Cotton Blend Fabrics Activated by Enzymatic Treatment and Loaded with Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles

    Get PDF
The present work discusses the possibility of applying enzymatic treatments for fabric surface activation that can facilitate the loading of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) onto polyester (PET) and polyester cotton blend (PET/C) fabrics prepared by sol-gel method. Activated polyester fabrics loaded by ZnO NPs were investigated by the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron dispersion emission X-ray (EDX) and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The functionality of activated polyester fabrics loaded by ZnO NPs was evaluated by analyzing its antimicrobial activity and UV protection efficiency. Antimicrobial activity of activated polyester fabrics and loaded by ZnO NPs was tested against Gram-positive (Bacillus mycoides), Gram-negative (Escherichia coli), and nonfilamentous fungus (Candida albicans). The level of UV protection was verified by the UV protection factor (UPF) of polyester fabrics. Activated post-treated polyester fabrics exhibited outstanding antimicrobial and UV protection efficiency. The achieved antimicrobial function and UV protection on the polyester fabrics are durable with repeated laundering processes even after five washing cycles

The current study was designed to evaluate the effects of metformin in some physiological and histological parameters of reproductive system in the diabetic male rats experimentally.  Forty rats were randomly divided into four groups. The (control) first group was treated with normal saline; the second was infected group which included rats diabetic experimentally treated by alloxan; the third and fourth groups were induced diabetic experimentally and received metformin suspension (150 mg kg-1 daily) at one and two doses respectively. Twelve hours was time between these two doses. Reproductive ability was measured by determination of some physiological parameters as count sperm, malformations, motility, dead sperm, weights of sex organs (testes, epididymis, prostate glands and seminal vesicles) and the damaged testicular structure. The present results indicated that the administrated metformin at high doses led to significant decrease (p < 0.05) in total count of sperm, motility and in weights of all sex organs such as testes, epididymis, prostate glands and seminal vesicle, while significant increase (p < 0.05) in sperm abnormalities and dead sperm. Also, the results showed that the diabetes and exposure to metformin caused many malformations of sperm such as shattered sperm, the lacking, hooked and quirky tail, while the abnormalities of head included the lacking, Globozoospermia and elliptical head. The histological damages in testicular structure were observed including the destroyed and raised thickness of connective tissue among seminiferous tubules, necrosis and reduction numbers of spermatocytes along with the congestion of blood vessels. Many histological alterations occurred clearly due to treated with high dose of metformin after diabetic experimentally including the most affected structural troubles as large fracture of seminiferous tubules, expansion of bloody congestion and raise of necrosis in testicular structure

A series of nine new 2,3-disubstituted 4(3H)-quinazolin-4-one derivatives was furnished starting from the 2-propyl-4(3H)-quinazoline-4-one (2). The reinvestigation of the key starting quinazolinone 2 was performed under microwave irradiation (MW) and solvent-free conditions. Combination of MW and phase-transfer catalysis using tetrabutylammonium benzoate (TBAB) as a novel neutral ionic catalyst was used for carrying out N-alkylation and condensation reactions of compound 2 as a simple, efficient and eco-friendly technique. The structure of the synthesized compounds was elucidated using different spectral and chemical analyses. In vitro antimicrobial activity of the compounds was investigated against four bacterial and two fungal strains; very modest activity was achieved. Some of the synthesized compounds were screened for their antitumor activity against different human tumor cell lines. The screened compounds exhibited a significant antitumor activity on some of the cancer cell lines, melanoma (SK-MEL-2), ovarian cancer (IGROV1), renal cancer (TK-10), prostate cancer (PC-3), breast cancer (MCF7) and colon cancer (HT29). The most active, even more active than the reference 5-fluorouracil, were found to be ethyl 4-[(4-oxo-2-propylquinazolin-3(4H)-yl)methyl]benzoate (3c), 3-{2-[6-(pyrrolidin-1-yl-sulfonyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline]-2-oxoethyl}-2-propylquinazolin-4(3H)-one (3e), N’-[(E)-(2H-1,3-benzodioxo-5-yl)methylidene]-2-(4-oxo-2-propylquinazolin-3(4H)-yl)acetohydrazide (10a), N’-[(E)-(4-hydroxyphenyl)methylidene]-2-(4-oxo-2-propylquinazo-lin-3(4H)-yl)acetohydrazide (10b) and N’-[(E)-(4-nitrophenyl)methylidene]-2-(4-oxo-2-propylquinazolin-3(4H)-yl)acetohydrazide (10c)

Endozoochory by goats of two invasive weeds with contrasted propagule traits

    Get PDF
Invasive plants have very important ecological and socioeconomic impacts. Producing and dispersing many viable seeds are key plant functional traits for invaders. Ungulate grazing plays an important role in the endozoochorous seed dispersal within grasslands and rangelands. Grazing can be applied as a practical and economical control method for plant invasions. We analyzed the effects of seed passage through the goat digestive system on the germination and viability for Sorghum halepense and Malva parviflora, common invasive species with contrasted propagules and seed traits. Both studied species produced seeds able to survive, in a small percentages (c. 0.80-1.70%), after being eaten by goats. Most of the seeds (c. 40-55%) of both species were retrieved between 24-48 h after ingestion. Goat passage provoked a decrease (> 60%) in the germination percentage and seed viability of S. halepense that was higher with longer gut retention times. In M. parviflora, the goat gut passage did not break its primary physical dormancy, since no retrieved seed germinated with similar viability as the uneaten seeds (c. 90%). In view of our results, goat grazing can be applied as a useful method to control S. halepense and M. parviflora invasions. Goats should be kept in corrals for at least 4 days after grazing to prevent transferring viable seeds to uninfected areas.Deanship of Scientific Research King Khalid University R.G.P.1/210/4
