    When the power of computing and communications technology was unleashed for the benefit of the society, only the good intentions were at heart and not enough attention was paid to the possible illegal and unethical activities in cyberspace. The intrinsic nature of Information Technology (IT) is such that, in today\u27s world, even what is thought to be a simple criminal behavior could cause colossal damage to the society. The need to pay attention to the security issues in IT has been recognized, as evidenced by a major emphasis on security in industry and education. While it may take considerable research and development effort to bring about infrastructures and applications that are fundamentally security-centric, there is need to cope with the prevailing information security problems. Educational institutions, for their part, have responded by initiating security related research and curricula

    Readiness for self-directed learning among King Abdulaziz University medical students

    Background: To determine readiness for self-directed learning (SDL) among medical students enrolled at King Abdulaziz University (KAU) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as well as identify demographic characteristics that might affect or control such readiness.Methods: Medical students at all levels of training were asked to participate in a study in the form of a self-response questionnaire via emailed link (Gugliemino’s Self-Directed Learner Readiness Scale [SDLRS]). This instrument was designed to measure the complex attitudes, skills and characteristics that comprise an individual’s current level of readiness to manage his or her own learning. Data were analysed using SPSS, and mean, median and total scores were calculated and compared.Results: Of more than 1900 medical students at the KAU Faculty of Medicine, 192 students responded to the self-response questionnaire (see appendix). Results suggested that readiness for SDL is below average for more than 99% of medical studentsConclusions: Our study showed that further evaluation of our students' readiness for SDL is required, as well as exploration and implementation of tools for improving skill and knowledge development, to enable students to develop a lifelong learning attitude

    Estimation of intrafamilial DNA contamination in family trio genome sequencing using deviation from Mendelian inheritance

    With the increasing number of sequencing projects involving families, quality control tools optimized for family genome sequencing are needed. However, accurately quantifying contamination in a DNA mixture is particularly difficult when genetically related family members are the sources. We developed TrioMix, a maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) framework based on Mendel\u27s law of inheritance, to quantify DNA mixture between family members in genome sequencing data of parent-offspring trios. TrioMix can accurately deconvolute any intrafamilial DNA contamination, including parent-offspring, sibling-sibling, parent-parent, and even multiple familial sources. In addition, TrioMix can be applied to detect genomic abnormalities that deviate from Mendelian inheritance patterns, such as uniparental disomy (UPD) and chimerism. A genome-wide depth and variant allele frequency plot generated by TrioMix facilitates tracing the origin of Mendelian inheritance deviations. We showed that TrioMix could accurately deconvolute genomes in both simulated and real data sets

    Operational Impact of the Baseline Integrated Arrival, Departure, and Surface System Field Demonstration

    To address the Integrated Arrival, Departure, and Surface (IADS) challenge, NASA is developing and demonstrating trajectory-based departure automation under a collaborative effort with the FAA and industry known as Airspace Technology Demonstration 2 (ATD-2). ATD-2 builds upon and integrates previous NASA research capabilities that include the Spot and Runway Departure Advisor (SARDA), the Precision Departure Release Capability (PDRC), and the Terminal Sequencing and Spacing (TSAS) capability. The ATD-2 field demonstration is organized into three phases. Phase I illustrates a Baseline IADS demonstration and includes all components of ATD-2 running in operational environments. Subsequent phases will fuse together strategic scheduling components as well as take into account metroplex considerations. This paper describes the baseline IADS system that was deployed at the end of 2017 and is continuing to run as part of the ATD-2 demonstration taking place at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT). The primary areas of deployment and system use are in the CLT Air Traffic Control Tower, CLT TRACON, CLT American Airlines ramp tower, Washington Center facility and American Airlines Integration Operations Center (IOC). In addition to describing the functions and capabilities that are part of the baseline IADS system, this paper also provides metrics regarding operational use as well as initial benefits metrics. Benefit metrics continue to be collected and aggregated across the areas of system delay, throughput, taxi time, fuel burn savings, and emissions savings. Furthermore, benefits as a result of common awareness of delays and the impact of takeoff and departure restrictions stemming from traffic flow management initiatives are described. The overall benefit of improved predictability and efficiency as a result of the baseline IADS system demonstration is also discussed

    Field Evaluation of the Baseline Integrated Arrival, Departure, and Surface Capabilities at Charlotte Douglas International Airport

    NASA is currently developing a suite of decision support capabilities for integrated arrival, departure, and surface (IADS) operations in a metroplex environment. The effort is being made in three phases, under NASA's Airspace Technology Demonstration 2 (ATD-2) sub-project, through a strong partnership with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), air carriers, airport, and general aviation community. The Phase 1 Baseline IADS capabilities provide enhanced operational efficiency and predictability of flight operations through data exchange and integration, tactical surface metering, and automated coordination of release time of controlled flights for overhead stream insertion. The users of the IADS system include the personnel at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) air traffic control tower, American Airlines ramp tower, CLT terminal radar approach control (TRACON), and Washington Center. This paper describes the Phase 1 Baseline IADS capabilities and field evaluation conducted at CLT from September 2017 for a year. From the analysis of operations data, it is estimated that 538,915 kilograms of fuel savings, and 1,659 metric tons of CO2 emission reduction were achieved during the period with a total of 944 hours of engine run time reduction. The amount of CO2 savings is estimated as equivalent to planting 42,560 urban trees. The results have also shown that the surface metering had no negative impact on on-time arrival performance of both outbound and inbound flights. The technology transfer of Phase 1 Baseline IADS capabilities has been made to the FAA and aviation industry, and the development of additional capabilities for the subsequent phases is underway

    Corneal Perforation with Preseptal Cellulitis in a Patient with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia

    We report a case of corneal perforation with preseptal cellulitis in a patient with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). A 17-yr-old female patient who was undergoing combination chemotherapy for ALL was referred due to upper lid swelling and pain in the right eye for 2 days. Visual acuity in the right eye was 20/20. Initial examination showed no abnormal findings, other than swelling of the right upper eyelid. Computed tomography showed a finding of preseptal cellulitis. Microbiologic study of bloody and purulent discharge revealed Serratia marcescens. Corneal melting and perforation with iris prolapse were detected in the right eye on the 16th day. Emergent tectonic keratoplasty was performed. Seven months after surgery, visual acuity in the right eye was 20/300, and the corneal graft was stable
