Effect of Fe, Ni, and Cr on the corrosion behaviour of hyper-eutectic Al-Si automotive alloy under different pH conditions
Effect of Fe, Ni and Cr on the corrosion behaviour of hyper-eutectic Al-Si automotive alloy was studied. The test of corrosion behaviour at different environmental pH 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13 was performed using conventional gravimetric measurements and complemented by resistivity, optical micrograph, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray analyser (EDX) investigations. The highest corrosion rate was observed at pH 13 followed by pH 1, while in the pH range of 3.0 to 11, there is a high protection of surface due to formation of stable surface oxide film. The highest corrosion rate at pH 13 is due to presence of sodium hydroxide in the solution in which the surface oxide film is soluble. At pH 1, however, high corrosion rate can be attributed to dissolution of Al due to the surface attack by aggressive chloride ions. Presence of Fe, Ni and Cr in hyper-eutectic Al-Si automotive alloy has significant effect on the corrosion rate at both environmental pH values. Resistivity of alloy surfaces initially decreases at pH 1 and pH 13 due to formation of thin films. The SEM images of corroded samples immersed in pH 1 solution clearly show pores due to uniform degradation of the alloy. In pH 13 solution, however, the corrosion layer looks more packed and impermeable

Electrochemical Corrosion Properties of Ternary Al and Quaternary Zr Added Bell Metal in 0.1M NaCl Solution
The electrochemical corrosion property of ternary Al and quaternary Zr added Bell metal in 0.1M Sodium Chloride solution has been experimentally conducted at room temperature. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method and Potentiodynamic polarization technique are used to carry out the electrochemical investigation. Microhardness test is also conducted for all three alloys and it reveals that Al addition increases the hardness of bell metal due to the formation of different intermetallic precipitates of Cu and Al. Optical Micrograph as well as Scanning Electron Micrograph have also been studied to characterize their surface condition. It is found that Zr addition refines the grain structure of the alloy and results in increase of hardness. The EIS study reveals that the corrosion resistance is seem to be augmented with the addition of ternary Al and quaternary Zr to bell metal. The potentiodynamic polarization curves disclose that both ternary Al added and quaternary Zr added alloy show better corrosion performance than the base bell metal alloy due to the formation of stable aluminium oxide film. The currentdensity (Icorr) of base bell metal showed higher value than both ternary Al added and quaternary Zr added bell metal alloys. The corrosion potential (Ecorr) and the open circuit potential (OCP) were seen to be moved to the more positive direction for the Al and Zr added alloys. Microstructure and SEM study of the alloys after corrosion revealed a formation of an oxide film on the surface of the ternary A and quaternary Zr added alloys, the probable cause of which is the presence of Al in the respective alloys
Role of Si on machined surfaces of Al-based automotive alloys under varying machining parameters
A morphological change due to Si contend into Al-based automotive alloys has been conducted on the characterization of machined surfaces in terms of roughness, temperature, chips formation as well as microstructure evaluation under different machining conditions. For this experiment, a shaper machine with HSS single point V-shaped cutting tool is used at different cutting speeds and depths of cut. The experimental results show that the surface roughness of the alloys decreases with the cutting speed and depth of cut but it is more prominent in the case of the cutting speed. This is because of a high cutting speed, which is more associated with the higher temperature and softening the work material leading to better surface finish. Higher Si added alloys also exhibit a better surface finish because the sample content is different fine and hard intermetallic due to ageing treatment, which also makes the alloys more brittle. For brittle and higher hardness, it produces a higher temperature during machining. During machining, relatively curly and short chips are formed by the high Si added alloy because of its low elongation properties. Electrochemical corrosion performance of Si-doped Al-based automotive alloy in 0.1 M NaCl solution
The aim of this study is to investigate the electrochemical corrosion behavior of Al-Si automotive alloys with different levels of Si doping in 0.1 M NaCl solution at room temperature. The study was performed by electrochemical method, using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. The condition of surfaces was characterized by both optical and scanning electron microscopy. Both the EIS and Tafel analyses revealed that the corrosion resistance was improved with the addition of Si up to the eutectic point due to the formation of protective oxide films. The higher Si added alloys showed lower values of current density, while the corrosion potential was shifted to a more positive direction. For higher Si added alloys, a higher amount of Mg2Si was formed as precipitates, which tend to form oxides such as SiO2 and MgO, further protecting the surfaces from corrosion. It can be observed from the micrographs that the scratches from polishing are removed after corrosion. Additionally, the SEM images reveal that corroded surfaces appear to have pits that are less noticeable in alloys with a greater Si content, suggesting thus the formation of a protective layer of oxides
