    Mobile robot based electrostatic spray system for controlling pests on cotton plants in Iraq

    A mobile robot based electrostatic spray system was developed to combat pest infestation on cotton plants in Iraq. The system consists of a charged spray nozzle, a CCD camera, a mobile robot (vehicle and arm) and Arduino microcontroller. Arduino microcontroller is used to control the spray nozzle and the robot. Matlab is used to process the image from the CCD camera and to generate the appropriate control signals to the robot and the spray nozzle. COMSOL multi-physics FEM software was used to design the induction electrodes to achieve maximum charge transfer onto the fan spray liquid film resulting in achieving the desired charge/mass ratio of the spray. The charged spray nozzle was operated on short duration pulsed spray mode.     Experimental Study of Low-Speed Cavity Flow Using Steady Jets

    Open cavity ሺܮ/ܦ = 4ሻ was examined at low speed ሺܷஶ = 26 ݉/ݏሻ. The baseline flow showed a typical open cavity flow. It was also found that a region of relatively high velocity fluctuations (indicated by RMS values) extends along the cavity separated shear layer from the mid of the cavity to the cavity’s trailing edge. Steady jets at an outlet velocity of 1.8 m/s was forced through a narrow slot at the leading edge. The jets modified the profile shape of the averaged ܷ velocity for the shear layer at the close proximity of the leading edge. However, the jet increased the fluctuation in the separated shear layer

    Effect of culture on acceptance of telemedicine in Middle Eastern countries: Case study of Jordan and Syria

    © Mary Ann Liebert, INC.We investigated issues that affect the use and adoption of telemedicine in Middle Eastern countries, taking the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Syrian Arab Republic as case studies. Our study is based on interviews with key stakeholders (including doctors, technicians, engineers, and decision makers) and questionnaires administered to key stakeholders (including patients), ensuring opinion was gained from people from a full range of backgrounds and roles in the healthcare system. We found doctor and patient resistance was a major issue preventing the adoption of telemedicine in both countries, followed by poor infrastructure, lack of funding, and lack of information technology training. Our research identifies that culture is a greater issue than technical matters for the adoption of telemedicine in Middle Eastern countries. Based on our preliminary results we developed a guideline framework for each country that might be applied to telemedicine projects at the pre-implementation phase. The proposed guideline framework was validated through a return visit to the stakeholders and seeking further opinion

    Frequency and voltage partitioning in presence of renewable energy resources for power system (example: North Chile power network)

    This paper investigates techniques for frequency and voltage partitioning of power network based on the graph-theory. These methods divide the power system into distinguished regions to avoid the spread of disturbances and to minimize the interaction between these regions for frequency and voltage control of power system. In case of required active and reactive power for improving the performance of the power system, control can be performed regionally instead of a centralized controller. In this paper, renewable energy sources are connected to the power network to verify the effect of these sources on the power systems partitioning and performance. The number of regions is found based on the frequency sensitivity for frequency partitioning and bus voltage for voltage partitioning to disturbances being applied to loads in each region. The methodology is applied to the north part of Chile power network. The results show the performance and ability of graph frequency and voltage partitioning algorithm to divide large scale power systems to smaller regions for applying decentralized controllers.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Control of Cavity-Induced Drag Using Steady Jets

    Separated shear layer oscillations in open cavities can induce drag, noise and vibration. This issue has many aerospace applications such as Landing gears and control surfaces [1]. Recently, phase-cancellation [1] and offinstability frequency excitation [2] & [3] approaches have been incorporated in different open-loop and feedback control systems. Despite the high control performance of these systems, further enhancement is still possible. In this study, steady jets, as shown in fig. 1, are forced through 2mm, two-dimensional slots at the leading and trailing edges of the cavity. In order to study the performance of this novel approach, different cases will be examined, including: jet combination (blowing from cavity leading edge, suction from cavity leading edge and blowing-suction), jet angle (parallel or deflected jet) and jet-to-free stream velocity factor /.
