Knowledge, perception and determinants of utilization of pharmacovigilance services among healthcare practitioners in Abuja

Objective: To determine knowledge, perception, practice and determinants of utilization of pharmacovigilance services among healthcare practitioners (HCP).Methods: This was a cross sectional study of HCP. A self-administered structured questionnaire was developed and pretested before administration. The participants were selected randomly using a sampling interval of four. Three hundred and forty questionnaires were administered. Data obtained were analyzed using SPSS version 20.Results: The response rate was 89%, of which 42% were males. Majority of the respondents had good knowledge of pharmacovigilance (PV), however only about 11.8% have reported Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR), 26% have ever been trained on PV, 27% knew of the ADR reporting tool, the “yellow form”. The major reason for underreporting of PV was ignorance on the part of the practitioners.Conclusion: The practice of PV among HCP is low, possible reasons include low training and poor knowledge of the ADR reporting tool. Patterns and outcome of respiratory disease among adult in-patients, in Abuja-Nigeria

Objectives: Respiratory disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Most of the deaths will occur in low resource countries like Nigeria. There is limited data on the burden of these respiratory diseases.Methods: A retrospective study of three hundred and seventy-seven (377) cases was carried out. Case selection was based on review by at least a specialist pulmonologist. Other data were retrieved with the help of questionnaire for analysis.Results: Respiratory diseases accounted for about 10.4% of hospital admissions at the medical emergency of the hospital. Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) (40.3%) and acute lower respiratory tract infections (ALRTI) (27.9%) were the major presentation. More deaths occurred from PTB (51.6%), with HIV and diabetes mellitus been the major comorbidities commonly associated with the disease presentation.Conclusion: The burden of respiratory diseases is substantial, with communicable diseases such as PTB and ALRTI are leading in terms of inpatient presentation. Cultural practices and the use of icterogenic agents in glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficient neonates: Any effect?

Background: Cultural practices involving the use of certain agents known to cause haemolysis in Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficient individuals are common during perinatal and neonatal periods. This study was targeted at identifying some of these agents and their role in the development of hyperbilirubinaemia in G6PD deficient neonates in our environment with a view at raising public awareness for an acceptable neonatal outcome.Materials and methods: One hundred and fifty neonates admitted into the Special Care Baby Units (SCBUs) of the Jos University Teaching Hospital, Bingham University Teaching Hospital, and the Plateau State Specialist Hospital with neonatal jaundice were enrolled for this study. Information on age, sex, history of drugs, chemicals and herbs used during or after pregnancy were obtained using a questionnaire. Five millilitres of the blood sample was collected into anticoagulated and plain sample bottles for Full Blood Count (FBC), Reticulocyte Count, Serum Bilirubin (SB) and G6PD assay.Results: Mean age at presentation was 3.28 ± 3.11 days. Mean haemoglobin concentration of the neonates was 15.90 ± 2.23 g/dL while mean reticulocyte count, total leukocyte and platelet count were 2.42 ± 0.71%, 7.10 ± 2.76 (x 109/L) and 228.45 ± 85.57 respectively. Sixty-one (40.7 %) of the studied neonates were G6PD deficient with mean G6PD activity of 3.79 ± 1.37 IU/gHb. Mean total serum bilirubin was 205.01 ± 96.57μmol/L. Icterogenic agent use was identified in 70 (46.7%) of the study subjects with naphthalene balls used in 19 (12.7%) study subjects.Conclusion: Icterogenic agents are being used for neonatal care in our environment despite the consequences of hyperbilirubinaemia in those with G6PD deficiency. Effect of psycho-education on quality of life of Human Immunodeficiency Virus-infected adult patients attending a tertiary hospital in north-central Nigeria

Background: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection is a disease of public health importance. HIV-related stigma remains a significant problem in people living with the disease. The stigmatization is associated with psychological trauma and poor quality of life outcomes. Hence, the study set out to determine the effect of psycho-education on the quality of life of this group of people.Methods: The study was a single-blind randomized control trial involving 130 HIV-infected adult patients attending the Special Treatment Clinic of University of Abuja Teaching Hospital. Participants were randomly assigned into an intervention group and a control group. The intervention offered was psycho-education which was delivered individually using a structured format. The intervention group received routine care plus psycho-education while the control group received routine care plus education on hygiene (as placebo). Data was collected about participants' socio-demography, medical history and social history. Their QOL was assessed using the WHOQOL-HIV BREF tool before and twelve weeks after intervention. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 16 and p values <0.05 were considered statistically significant.Results: Majority of the study participants were aged between 35 and 44 years (36.0%). Most were females (68.0%), Christians (79.5%), married (61.5%), civil servants (31.1%) and with tertiary education (37.7%). The mean QOL score was highest in the spiritual domain (15.8) and lowest in the environmental domain (13.1). At baseline, there was no statistically significant difference in the mean QOL scores between the intervention and control groups. However, at the end of the twelve week follow up period, the mean QOL scores for the intervention group was higher than those of the control group in all the domains of QOL. The difference was statistically significant in all the domains except the physical domain. The p-values were 0.053, <0.001, <0.001, 0.010, 0.038 and <0.001in the physical, psychological, level of independence, social relationship, environmental and spiritual domains respectively.Conclusion: In conclusion, Psycho-education offered alongside with routine care is effective in improving QOL of HIV-infected adults.Keywords: Psycho-education, Quality of life, HIV, Adults, Hospita
