Behavior and Damage of Dams Under the 1993 Big Earthquakes in Japan

    Get PDF
By analyses of the acceleration records at dams during the two big earthquakes which hit in Hokkaido of Japan in 1993, the maximum acceleration at damsite rock, the maximum acceleration amplification ratios at crest and the natural periods of dam bodies were evaluated and were compared the results with empirical equations. Damage to the dams was described, and the mechanism of the deformations was examined

Dynamic Deformation Characteristics of Rockfill Materials from Laboratory Test, In-Situ Test and Earthquake Motion Analysis

On dynamic analyses of rockfill dams, dynamic deformation characteristics of rockfill materials such as shear moduli and damping ratios must be known to make analysis more accurate. In this study, large-scale cyclic triaxial tests were carried out using rockfill materials of actual dams, and the results were compared with the dynamic deformation characteristics obtained by in-situ geophysical explorations and response analyses of earthquake motions observed at dams. Furthermore, the radiation damping ratio was estimated from response analyses and laboratory tests, and then the frequency and strain dependency characteristics of the radiation damping were evaluated

Mesonephric adenocarcinoma with a sarcomatous component, a notable subtype of cervical carcinosarcoma: a case report and review of the literature

ABSTRACT: Carcinosarcoma of the uterine cervix is less common than its counterpart in the uterine corpus. On the other hand, mesonephric adenocarcinoma is also a rare neoplasm in the uterine cervix, and it has been reported that mesonephric adenocarcinomas are often accompanied by sarcomatous components. We present a case of mesonephric adenocarcinoma with a sarcomatous component which arose in a 63-year-old postmenopausal woman. The hysterectomy specimen grossly showed an exophytic mass measuring 1.8 cm in the uterine cervix. Histologically, diffuse mesonephric hyperplasia and adenocarcinoma with malignant spindle cell proliferation was recognized, and therefore the tumor was diagnosed as “mesonephric adenocarcinoma with a sarcomatous component.” The review of the literature of cervical carcinosarcoma and cervical mesonephric adenocarcinoma revealed that 16% of cervical carcinosarcoma is of mesonephric duct origin, and that mesonephric adenocarcinoma seems to be more likely to have sarcomatous change. We think the presence of a sarcomatous component in the cervical biopsy specimen could be helpful in the diagnosis of mesonephric duct origin. Solid variant of serous cystadenoma of the pancreas

We describe a case of a solid variant of serous cystadenoma of the pancreas. The preoperative examination results led to a diagnosis of a nonfunctional pancreatic islet cell tumour, and the patient underwent a pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy. The tumour was diagnosed as a solid variant of serous cystadenoma by histopathological examination. Solid variant of serous cystadenoma of the pancreas is difficult to diagnose preoperatively. More cases must be accumulated and investigated to obtain clues for accurate diagnosis

    Simulations of Odd Microswimmers

We perform numerical simulations of odd microswimmers consisting of three spheres and two odd springs. To describe the hydrodynamic interaction, both the Oseen-type and the Rotne-Prager-Yamakawa (RPY)-type mobilities are used. For the Oseen-type mobility, the simulation results quantitatively reproduce the asymptotic expression of the average velocity. For the RPY-type mobility, on the other hand, the average velocity is smaller than that of the Oseen-type mobility and the deviation is more pronounced for larger spheres. We also perform simulations of microswimmers having different sphere sizes and show that the average velocity becomes smaller than that of the equal size case. The size of the middle sphere plays an important role in determining the average velocity
