    Study of the factors related to atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass grafting: A search for a marker to predict the occurrence of atrial fibrillation before surgical intervention

    ObjectiveAtrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery is a frequent complication. In this study we studied various factors in addition to trying to identify a marker that would predict the potential for atrial fibrillation before surgical intervention to prevent its occurrence.MethodsWe targeted 234 cases in which isolated coronary artery bypass grafting had been performed. The items for study included age, EuroSCORE, and maximum values of creatine phosphokinase–MB, troponin I, and angiotensin II after surgical intervention and preoperative values of atrial natriuretic peptide, brain natriuretic peptide, and C-reactive protein. As fibrotic markers, we measured levels of the sialylated carbohydrate antigen KL-6 in the blood, hyaluronic acid, and pyridinoline cross-linked carboxyterminal telepeptide of type I collagen C. At the time of surgical intervention, a section of the right atrium was extracted, and atrial natriuretic peptide, the sialylated carbohydrate antigen KL-6, hyaluronic acid, and pyridinoline cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen levels were measured.ResultsAtrial fibrillation was observed in 73 (31.2%) cases, and preoperative factors that showed statistically significant differences in the occurrence of atrial fibrillation included age, EuroSCORE, and preoperative values of atrial natriuretic peptide, angiotensin II, the sialylated carbohydrate antigen KL-6, hyaluronic acid, and pyridinoline cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen in the blood. As for intraoperative and postoperative factors, statistically significant differences were observed in the postoperative maximum of angiotensin II, atrial natriuretic peptide of the right atrium, the sialylated carbohydrate antigen KL-6, hyaluronic acid, and pyridinoline cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen levels.ConclusionThe fibrosis of tissue associated with age is believed to be closely related to the occurrence of atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass grafting. This study suggests that the preoperative values of atrial natriuretic peptide, angiotensin II, the sialylated carbohydrate antigen KL-6, hyaluronic acid, and pyridinoline cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen in the blood are useful as a new index for the occurrence of atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass grafting

    A Survey of Pressure Vessel Code Compliance for Superconducting RF Cryomodules

    Superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities made from niobium and cooled with liquid helium are becoming key components of many particle accelerators. The helium vessels surrounding the RF cavities, portions of the niobium cavities themselves, and also possibly the vacuum vessels containing these assemblies, generally fall under the scope of local and national pressure vessel codes. In the U.S., Department of Energy rules require national laboratories to follow national consensus pressure vessel standards or to show "a level of safety greater than or equal to" that of the applicable standard. Thus, while used for its superconducting properties, niobium ends up being treated as a low-temperature pressure vessel material. Niobium material is not a code listed material and therefore requires the designer to understand the mechanical properties for material used in each pressure vessel fabrication; compliance with pressure vessel codes therefore becomes a problem. This report summarizes the approaches that various institutions have taken in order to bring superconducting RF cryomodules into compliance with pressure vessel codes.Comment: 7 p

    Substroke Approach to HMM-based On-line Kanji Handwriting Recognition.

    A new method is proposed for on-line handwriting recognition of Kanji characters. The method employs substroke HMMs as minimum units to constitute Japanese Kanji characters and utilizes the direction of pen motion. The main motivation is to fully utilize the continuous speech recognition algorithm by relating sentence speech to Kanji character, phonemes to substrokes, and grammar to Kanji structure. The proposed system consists input feature analysis, substroke HMMs, a character structure dictionary and a decoder. The present approach has the following advantages over the conventional methods that employ whole character HMMs. 1) Much smaller memory requirement for dictionary and models. 2) Fast recognition by employing efficient substroke network search. 3) Capability of recognizing characters not included in the training data if defined as a sequence of substrokes in the dictionary. 4) Capability of recognizing characters written by various different stroke orders with multiple definitions per one character in the dictionary. 5) Easiness in HMM adaptation to the user with a few sample character data

    Heat shock transcription factor 1 preserves cardiac angiogenesis and adaptation during pressure overload

    To examine how heat shock transcription factor 1 (HSF1) protects against maladaptive hypertrophy during pressure overload, we subjected HSF1 transgenic (TG), knockout (KO) and wild type (WT) mice to a constriction of transverse aorta (TAC), and found that cardiac hypertrophy, functions and angiogenesis were well preserved in TG mice but were decreased in KO mice compared to WT ones at 4 weeks, which was related to HIF-1 and p53 expression. Inhibition of angiogenesis suppressed cardiac adaptation in TG mice while overexpression of angiogenesis factors improved maladaptive hypertrophy in KO mice. In vitro formation of vasculatures by microvascular endothelial cells was higher in TG mice but lower in KO mice than in WT ones. A siRNA of p53 but not a HIF-1 gene significantly reversed maladaptive hypertrophy in KO mice whereas a siRNA of HIF-1 but not a p53 gene induced maladaptive hypertrophy in TG mice. Heart microRNA analysis showed that miR-378 and miR-379 were differently changed among the three mice after TAC, and miR-378 or siRNA of miR-379 could maintain cardiac adaptation in WT mice. These results indicate that HSF1 preserves cardiac adaptation during pressure overload through p53-HIF-1-associated angiogenesis, which is controlled by miR-378 and miR-379
