Diffusive hydrogenation reactions of CO embedded in amorphous solid water at elevated temperatures ~70 K

The surface processes on interstellar dust grains have an important role in the chemical evolution in molecular clouds. Hydrogenation reactions on ice surfaces have been extensively investigated and are known to proceed at low temperatures mostly below 20 K. In contrast, information about the chemical processes of molecules within an ice mantle is lacking. In this work, we investigated diffusive hydrogenation reactions of carbon monoxide (CO) embedded in amorphous solid water (ASW) as a model case and discovered that the hydrogenation of CO efficiently proceeds to yield H2CO and CH3OH even above 20 K when CO is buried beneath ASW. The experimental results suggest that hydrogen atoms diffuse through the cracks of ASW and have a sufficient residence time to react with embedded CO. The hydrogenation reactions occurred even at temperatures up to ~70 K. Cracks collapse at elevated temperatures but the occurrence of hydrogenation reactions means that the cracks would not completely disappear and remain large enough for penetration by hydrogen atoms. Considering the hydrogen-atom fluence in the laboratory and molecular clouds, we suggest that the penetration of hydrogen and its reactions within the ice mantle occur in astrophysical environments. Development of a UV-transparent Lens Array for Enlarging the Effective Area of Multichannel SiPMs

We developed a UV-transparent lens array that can increase the photon detection efficiency of a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array comprising of 64 pixels (3×33\times3 mm2^2 each) and 0.2-mm gaps. Through the plano-convex spherical lens on each 3.2×3.23.2\times3.2 mm2^2 region, we showed that the loss of photon detection efficiency due to the pixel gaps could be recovered as the incident photons get concentrated on the sensitive regions of the SiPM array. By using a prototype lens array, we achieved approximately 10%-30% relative increase in photon detection efficiency in our target angles of incidence of 30-60 deg.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on New Photon-Detectors (PD18

Successful Treatment of MMP-9-Expressing Angiosarcoma with Low-Dose Docetaxel and Bisphosphonate

We describe a 78-year-old Japanese patient with angiosarcoma on the scalp. Interestingly, immunohistochemical staining revealed this tumor as positive for matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9). After conventional therapy for angiosarcoma with surgical treatment and radiation therapy, we intravenously administered docetaxel at 40 mg/m2 body surface area together with oral administration of 17.5 mg sodium risedronate hydrate. One and a half years after the standard treatment, there was no evidence of local recurrence or metastasis

Royal Jelly Prevents Osteoporosis in Rats: Beneficial Effects in Ovariectomy Model and in Bone Tissue Culture Model

Royal jelly (RJ) has been used worldwide for many years as medical products, health foods and cosmetics. Since RJ contains testosterone and has steroid hormone-type activities, we hypothesized that it may have beneficial effects on osteoporosis. We used both an ovariectomized rat model and a tissue culture model. Rats were divided into eight groups as follows: sham-operated (Sham), ovariectomized (OVX), OVX given 0.5% (w/w) raw RJ, OVX given 2.0% (w/w) RJ, OVX given 0.5% (w/w) protease-treated RJ (pRJ), OVX given 2.0% (w/w) pRJ, OVX given 17β-estradiol and OVX given its vehicle, respectively. The Ovariectomy decreased tibial bone mineral density (BMD) by 24%. Administration of 17β-estradiol to OVX rats recovered the tibial BMD decrease by 100%. Administration of 2.0% (w/w) RJ and 0.5–2.0% (w/w) pRJ to OVX rats recovered it by 85% or more. These results indicate that both RJ and pRJ are almost as effective as 17β-estradiol in preventing the development of bone loss induced by ovariectomy in rats. In tissue culture models, both RJ and pRJ increased calcium contents in femoral-diaphyseal and femoral-metaphyseal tissue cultures obtained from normal male rats. However, in a mouse marrow culture model, they neither inhibited the parathyroid hormone (PTH)-induced calcium loss nor affected the formation of osteoclast-like cells induced by PTH in mouse marrow culture system. Therefore, our results suggest that both RJ and pRJ may prevent osteoporosis by enhancing intestinal calcium absorption, but not by directly antagonizing the action of PTH

Interleukin(IL)-36α and IL-36γ Induce Proinflammatory Mediators from Human Colonic Subepithelial Myofibroblasts

Background: Interleukin (IL)-36 cytokines are recently reported member of the IL-1 cytokine family. However, there is little information regarding the association between IL-36 cytokines and gut inflammation. In the present study, we investigated the biological activity of IL-36α and IL-36γ using human colonic subepithelial myofibroblasts (SEMFs). Methods: The mRNA expression and the protein expression of target molecules in SEMFs were evaluated using real-time PCR and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), respectively. The intracellular signaling of IL-36 cytokines was analyzed using Western blot analysis and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) specific for MyD88 adaptor proteins (MyD88 and IRAK1) and NF-κB p65. Results: IL-36α and IL-36γ significantly enhanced the secretion of IL-6 and CXC chemokines (CXCL1, CXCL2, and CXCL8) by SEMFs. The combination of IL-36α/γ and IL-17A or of IL-36α/γ and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α showed a synergistic effect on the induction of IL-6 and CXC chemokines. The mRNA expression of proinflammatory mediators induced by IL-36α and/or IL-36γ was significantly suppressed by transfection of siRNA for MyD88 or IRAK1. Both inhibitors of mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and siRNAs specific for NF-κBp65 significantly reduced the expression of IL-6 and CXC chemokines induced by IL-36α and/or IL-36γ. Conclusion: These results suggest that IL-36α and IL-36γ contribute to gut inflammation through the induction of proinflammatory mediators
