    A Feasibility Study on the Simultaneous Sensing of Turbidity and Chlorophyll a Concentration Using a Simple Optical Measurement Method

    We have been developing a wireless sensor network system to monitor the quality of lake water in real time. It consists of a sensor module and a system module, which includes communication and power modules. We have focused on pH, turbidity and chlorophyll a concentration as the criteria for qualifying lake water quality. These parameters will be detected by a microfluidic device based sensor module embedded in the wireless sensor network system. In order to detect the turbidity and the chlorophyll a concentration simultaneously, we propose a simple optical measurement method using LED and photodiode in this paper. Before integrating a turbidity and chlorophyll a concentration sensor into the microfluidic device based pH sensor, we performed feasibility studies such as confirmation of the working principle and experiments using environmental water samples. As a result, we successfully verified our simultaneous sensing method by using a simple optical setup of the turbidity and the chlorophyll a concentration

    Phase change in CoTi₂ induced by MeV electron irradiation

    This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Philosophical Magazine on 23 July 2018, available at https://doi.org/10.1080/14786435.2018.1468941.The phase change induced by MeV electron irradiation in the intermetallic compound E9₃–CoTi₂ was investigated using high-voltage electron microscopy. Under MeV electron irradiation, CoTi₂ was first transformed into an amorphous phase and, with continued irradiation, crystallite formation in the amorphous phase (i.e. formation of crystallites of a solid-solution phase within the amorphous phase) was induced. The critical temperature for amorphisation was around 250 K. The total dose (dpa) required for crystallite formation (i.e. that required for partial crystallisation) was high (i.e. 27–80 dpa) and, even after prolonged irradiation, the amorphous phase was retained in the irradiated sample. Such partial crystallisation behaviour of amorphous Co₃₃Ti₆₇ was clearly different from the crystallisation behaviour (i.e. amorphous-to-solid solution, polymorphous transformation) of amorphous Cr₆₇Ti₃₃ reported in the literature.     Effect of 1,2-Dimethylhydrazine and Hydrogen Peroxide for the Duodenal Tumorigenesis in Relation to Blood Catalase Activity in Mice

    Three different mouse strains, C3H/C^b_s C3H/HeN and B6C3 (C57BL x C3H) F1, having low, high and moderate catalase activities, were studied for duodenal tumorigenesis by the combined treatment with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH)* and hydrogen peroxide (HPO). DMH alone rarely induced duodenal tumors. Administration of HPO into 3 different mouse strains induced different frequencies of duodenal tumors ; 91.7% in C3H/C^b_s 9.5% in C3H/HeN and 31.8% in B6C3F1 mice. The incidence of duodenal tumors was significantly increased to 52.6% and 93.8% both in C3H/HeN and B6C3F1 mice by the combined administration of DMH and HPO. These increases in duodenal tumor were inversely correlated with the finding that administration of DMH or HPO alone or combined treatment of DMH and HPO significantly decreased mean blood catalase activities both in C3H and B6C3F1 mice

    A Case of Cystic Basal Cell Carcinoma Which Shows a Homogenous Blue/Black Area under Dermatoscopy

    Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin tumor and contains several different histopathological types. Here, we report a case of cystic basal cell carcinoma, which is relatively rare and might be clinically misdiagnosed. A dermatoscopic examination of the case revealed a homogenous blue/black area usually not seen in BCC. We reviewed 102 BCC cases resected and diagnosed at Sapporo Medical University Hospital between April 2005 and March 2010. Among them, only three were the cystic type
