    The Export Growth of Pakistan: A Decomposition Analysis

    The Constant Market Share Analysis of export growth is used here to capture the world trade effect, the commodity composition effect, the market distribution effect and the competitiveness effect for the periods: 1984-85–1988-89 and 1988-89–1992-93. The results show that Pakistan has maintained her export share in the world market. The market distribution and competitiveness of Pakistani exports have improved significantly between the two periods under study. However, the concentration of Pakistani exports into traditional commodities, whose world demand remained sluggish, has offset the positive contribution of effective market distribution and improved competitive strengths to a large extent. A restructuring of exports (from traditional to non-traditional), an increase in the variety of exports, search for new fast growing markets and an improvement in the economic and political environment are suggested to enhance the export growth of Pakistan in future.

    Microemulsions formation, stability and their characterisations

    This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.This thesis is concerned with aspects of the surface and colloid chemistry of various microemulsion systems stabilised by pure nonionic surfactants and alcohol as well as mixtures of nonionic and anionic surfactants. Phase equilibria and interfacial characteristics of the systems are studied with a view to their potential usefulness for enhanced oil recovery, in which salinity and temperature are important parameters. The equilibrium microemulsion phases are scanned at different temperatures and salinities and thus interfacial boundaries can be determined and optimum salinity scans can be performed accurately using a modified spectrophotometer. Several analytical techniques (e.g., high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, ion-exchange chromatography, mass spectrometry, viscometry, electrical conductivity, photon correlation spectroscopy, UV-spectrophotometry, thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy, surface and interfacial tension techniques) have been used to characterise and understand the microchemistry of the microemulsion systems. Ultra-low interfacial tensions (>0.1 µN/m) can be achieved in the microemulsion systems. Surfactant transfer between phases, and phase inversion of micro emulsions are shown to occur around the condition which produces minimum interfacial tension. Adsorption of the surfactants from aqueous and nonaqueous solutions has been investigated and the results show that the extent of adsorption can be reduced significantly in the presence of alcohols (co-solvent). The extent of adsorption increases with increasing temperature and salinity; however, it decreases with an increase in the hydrophilic head group of the surfactant. Adsorption of nonionic surfactants on quartz from the nonaqueous solution (decane) is much greater than from aqueous solution. In microemulsion applications, droplet combustion of w/o microemulsions is also studied for different surfaces (i.e. silica, oxidised Fecralloy and catalyst coated Fecralloy) in the temperature range of 313-573K. Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde are formed as intermediate combustion products. Thus the microemulsion combustion can lead to new oxygenate products. The w/o microemulsion route is used to synthesize colloidal silica of controlled particle size and morphology. The particle size can be varied by changing the molar ratio of water to TEOS using a water pH of 10.5.EE

    Military Expenditures and Economic Growth in Pakistan

    This paper explores the impacts of defence expenditures on economic growth and other major economic variables in the Pakistan economy over the period 1972-1995. The results of Granger-causality tests show that there is bi-directional feedback between the defence burden and GDP growth. We test four different single equation models that are widely used in the defence literature. In these frameworks we generally find the defence burden to be negatively related to GDP growth. Finally, we specify a three-equation model which explains GDP growth, average propensity to save, and the defence ratio. In single equation estimations of the savings ratio and the defence burden, we uncover some interesting relationships. The savings ratio is affected positively by the defence ratio, and negatively by the inflation rate. The Pakistani defence burden is impacted negatively by the Indian defence burden and positively by the government budget. When all three equations are estimated as a system to account for feedback and covariance between these equations, these effects are diminished and go down in statistical significance.

    Comparison of oxybutynin and tolterodine in treatment of detrusor overactivity associated with upper motor neuron lesions, based on changes in urodynamic parameters

    To compare efficacy of oxybutynin and tolterodine in managing Detrusor Overactivity (DO) in Pakistani patients with different upper motor neuron lesions. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was carried out at Armed Forces Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, Rawalpindi from January to August 2015 including individuals with a diagnosis of DO as a result of upper motor neuron lesions. Maximal detrusor pressure (MDP) and maximal cystometric capacity (MCC) were measured at baseline and at four months post-treatment. Group-A was treated with tolterodine and group-B with oxybutynin. Results: A total of 60 individuals (mean age: 43.9 ± 15 years) were included. Majority (83.3%) were male and had spinal cord injury as the commonest etiology (56.7%). Group-A had a mean pre-treatment MCC of 188.3 ± 48.2 ml, and a mean post-treatment MCC of 281.5 ± 49.1 ml (p\u3c 0.001). The mean pre-treatment MDP was 83.6 ± 9.5 cm of H2O, and the mean post-treatment value was 40.9 ± 10.2 cm of H2O (p\u3c 0.001). Group-B had a mean pre-treatment MCC of 209.8 ± 60.5 ml, and mean post-treatment MCC of 308.7 ± 65 ml (p\u3c 0.001). The mean pre-treatment MDP was 80.7 ± 10.6 cm of H2O, and the mean post-treatment value was 40.7 ± 10.1 cm of H2O (p\u3c 0.001). The difference in mean reduction in MCC and MDP produced by tolterodine and oxybutynin was statistically insignificant. Conclusions: Both oxybutynin and tolterodine showed similar efficacy in the treatment of DO based on measurable urodynamic outcomes

    Ultrasound Imaging of Testes and Epididymides of Normal and Infertile Breeding Bulls

    Echotexture of testes and epididymides from 10 slaughtered male buffaloes was studied. Diameter of testis and mediastinum testis was measured by ultrasound and compared with respective values taken by calipers. Testes and epididymides of another 10 fertile and 10 infertile breeding bulls were examined in vivo through manual palpation and ultrasound imaging. Semen quality of these bulls was also monitored. There were significant (P<0.01) positive correlations between ultrasound and calipers values of all parameters. The testicular parenchyma of fertile bulls was uniformly homogeneous and moderately echogenic. Epididymal tail was more heterogeneous and less echogenic, while epididymal head was homogeneous and less echogenic, than the testicular parenchyma. The epididymal body appeared as hypoechoic structure with echogenic margin. Among 10 infertile bulls, nine had poor semen quality, while one bull failed to give any ejaculate. On ultrasonography, six bulls showed abnormalities in their scrotal echotexture. Among these, one had an abundance of hyperechoic areas scattered in the testicular parenchyma, some of these showed acoustic shadowing, showing testicular degenerations with mineralization. The second bull showed many anechoic areas in the testes and epididymal head, demarcated from the rest of the organ by well defined margins. In the third bull, three-fourth of the right testis showed hyperechoic areas, suspected of testicular degeneration with mineralization. The fourth bull had two anechoic areas in one testis assumed to represent dilated blood vessel. The fifth bull showed small hyperechoic areas within the testicular parenchyma. The sixth bull showed an anechoic area with distinct hyperechogenic margin below the testicular tunics. The remaining four bulls had normal echogenicity of testes and epididymides in spite of poor semen quality. In conclusion, diagnostic ultrasound may be included in breeding soundness examination of breeding bulls

    Improving the robustness of neural networks using K-support norm based adversarial training

    It is of significant importance for any classification and recognition system, which claims near or better than human performance to be immune to small perturbations in the dataset. Researchers found out that neural networks are not very robust to small perturbations and can easily be fooled to persistently misclassify by adding a particular class of noise in the test data. This, so-called adversarial noise severely deteriorates the performance of neural networks, which otherwise perform really well on unperturbed dataset. It has been recently proposed that neural networks can be made robust against adversarial noise by training them using the data corrupted with adversarial noise itself. Following this approach, in this paper, we propose a new mechanism to generate a powerful adversarial noise model based on K-support norm to train neural networks. We tested our approach on two benchmark datasets, namely the MNIST and STL-10, using muti-layer perceptron and convolutional neural networks. Experimental results demonstrate that neural networks trained with the proposed technique show significant improvement in robustness as compared to state-of-the-art techniques
