Familial cerebellar ataxia and hypogonadism associated with sensorimotor axonal polyneuropathy
Akbostanci, Muhittin Cenk/0000-0001-5808-5121WOS: 000089503300003PubMed: 10996709In this article, we report two siblings who have familial cerebellar ataxia and hypogonadism associated with sensorimotor axonal polyneuropathy documented by light microscopy. This combination has not been reported previously in the literature. Cerebellar ataxia and hypogonadism is reviewed according to the clinical and laboratory features of the reported cases in the literature. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V
Erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity differs in clinical subgroups of Parkinson's disease patients
Akbostanci, Muhittin Cenk/0000-0001-5808-5121WOS: 000172541400007PubMed: 11817268There is controversy as to whether there are clinical subgroups in Parkinson's disease (PD). Six tremor-dominant and six bradykinesia-dominant patients identified among 29 cases with PD were compared in terms of erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and several clinical variables. Erythrocyte SOD activity in tremor-dominant patients was higher than in bradykinesia-dominant patients. According to our preliminary results obtained from small number of patients, the difference of SOD activity in clinically distinct subgroups suggests there may be separate clinical subgroups of PD which can be differentiated by a biological marker
Management of a hemidystonic patient with thalamotomy, campotomy and cervical dorsal root entry zone operation
Several medical and surgical procedures have been presented for treatment of dystonia. Thalamotomy, pallidotomy, and campotomy are some of the surgical choices. This study presents a patient with dystonia who underwent a cervical dorsal root entry zone (DREZ) operation after thalamotomy and campotomy. A 23-year-old man who was resistant to medical treatment presented with left hemidystonia. Thalamotomy and campotomy were performed. The patient remarkably benefited from the procedure but dystonic complaints in his left arm continued. A cervical DREZ operation was performed 5 years after the first operation and the dystonic complaints decreased after the surgery. This article presents a new aspect for the treatment of dystonia. Based on the outcomes of the treatment, DREZ operation may be suggested as an alternative surgical treatment for patients with segmental dystonia located in the extremities. Copyright (C) 2005 S.
