    Age- and Sex-Specific Burden of Morbidity and Disability in India: A Current Scenario

    India is the second most populous country in the world with a population of 1.3 billion; any change in its morbidity and disability pattern is bound to bring change at the Asia level, which is a matter of concern for the developing countries. Disability-free life expectancy (DFLE) and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) provide summary measures of health across characteristics. The assessments of epidemiological patterns and health system performance of any place and time period display its progress towards the goal of sustainable development goals (SDGs). The main aim of this study is to assess the age and sex pattern of the burden of diseases (mortality and morbidity) and disability in India. The information on disease and deaths was extracted from the 71st round of the National Sample Surveys (NSS) conducted in 2014 (NSS 2014) and the Causes of Deaths Study conducted in the 2010–2013 (RGI 2010–2013) and disability from Census of India 2011 (ORG 2011)

    Appropriateness of perioperative antibiotics in thyroid surgery

    Background: Most of the guidelines do not recommend routine antibiotics prophylaxis in clean head and neck surgery like thyroidectomy. In contrary to the recommendation, antibiotics are being routinely prescribed in perioperative period for various duration in many centers of Nepal. This study was aimed to find out the need of postoperative antibiotics in surgeries for thyroid related problems. Methods: Records of all patients who had undergone surgery for thyroid related problems from Jan, 2019 to Sept, 2022 were retrospectively reviewed for patterns of antibiotic use, apart from preincision antibiotic, in postoperative period which was classified as group A – no antibiotics, group B – shorter course of antibiotics (≀3 days) and group C – longer course of antibiotics (>3 days). The occurrence of surgical site infection (SSI) was recorded. Results: During the study period, 77 patients underwent surgery for thyroid related problems, out of which five were excluded (records not found in four cases and one patient was ASA III). Two out of 72 (2.77 %) patients developed superficial incisional SSI which was managed conservatively. One patient in each group A (50) and group B (8) developed SSI. Conclusion: Postoperative antibiotics can be avoided safely even in our setup in clean head and neck surgeries like thyroidectomy without increase in the risk of SSI thus reducing the cost to the patients. &nbsp

The designed antenna resonates at 3 different frequencies in range of 3-4GHz. Simulation and measurement results of return loss with and without control lines are presented.     The Botany, Chemistry, Pharmacological and Therapeutic Application of Psoralea corylifolia L. – A Review

    Psoralea corylifolia Linn. is an endangered and medicinally important plant indigenous to tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Its medicinal usage is reported in Indian pharmaceutical codex, the Chinese, British and the American pharmacopoeias and in different traditional system of medicines such as Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha. The review reveals that wide ranges of phytochemical constituents have been isolated from the plant and it possesses important activities like antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antitumer. Various other activities like hepatoprotective, antioxidants and antithelminitic have also been reported. These repots are very encouraging and indicate that herb should be studied more expensively for its therapeutic benefits.This article briefly reviews the botany, pharmacology, biochemistry and therapeutic application of the plant.     ChrR Gene Variability in Cr-stressed Leptolyngbya boryana for the Biotransformation of Cr (VI) to Cr (III)

    Chromium (VI) is a well-known pollutant that is present in industrially polluted soil and water, and has been reported to be mutagenic and carcinogenic. In the present study, we investigated the effective use of Leptolyngbya boryana (cyanobacterium) as an eco-friendly option to overcome Cr (VI) toxicity in tannery effluents. The main objective of this study was to identify the Cr reductase (ChrR) gene and its variability in the context of Cr (VI) stress. Industrial polluted soil samples were collected and processed according to standard protocols for ChrR variation and 16S rDNA gene analysis. Genomic DNA was isolated from the collected samples and the ChrR and 16S rDNA genes were amplified by PCR. Amplified 16S rDNA was sequenced and aligned with known sequences. In the present study, a strong correlation was established between the nucleotide sequences of the ChrR and 16S rDNA genes. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was determined for Cr (VI), and pure strains of L. boryana were identified and isolated from soil samples. Cr (VI)-stressed conditions and their genetic variability were confirmed by sequencing. In conclusion, the L. boryana strain has been identified an eco-friendly option for overcoming Cr (VI) toxicity in tannery effluents

    A miniature reconfigurable printed monopole antenna for WLAN/WiMAX and LTE communication bands

    A reconfigurable printed monopole antenna covering WLAN, LTE, WiMAX and HiperLAN communication bands is presented in this paper. The antenna operates between these frequencies with activation of 2 switches. The proposed antenna is a low profile, miniaturised design and occupies a volume of 20 Γ— 25 Γ— 0.5(25mm 3 ) which makes it an ideal candidate to slot into compact and portable devices. Initial results including antenna design, S-Parameters, Radiation Characteristics and Peak gain at different frequencies is presented and discussed

    Ytterbium triflate efficiently catalyzes an unusual cyclization of o-hydroxybenzaldehydes with 2,3-dihydrofuran and 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran in the presence of trimethyl orthoformate at ambient temperature to afford a new class of compounds, furo- and pyrano[2,3-b]benzopyrans in excellent yields with high diastereoselectivity. Also, o-hydroxybenzaldehydes reacted smoothly with acetophenones in the presence of a catalytic amount of scandium triflate under similar reaction conditions to give the corresponding 2,4-dialkoxy-2-aryl-3,4-dihydro-2H-1-benzopyrans in high yields

    Prediabetes in rural adolescent girls from DERVAN cohort: data from the KONKAN region of the state of Maharashtra, India (DERVAN-4)

    BackgroundIndia is witnessing an epidemic of type 2 diabetes. Overweight/obesity, overnutrition, physical inactivity, and family history are well-known risk factors for diabetes. We investigated the role of undernutrition in the development of diabetes among rural adolescent girls.MethodsDERVAN cohort study was set up in the KONKAN region of the western Indian state of Maharashtra. It enrolled 1,520 adolescent girls (16–18 years old at the time of enrollment). We measured glycemic parameters (glucose, insulin, and HbA1C) and body size using anthropometry and body composition using bioimpedance. Prediabetes was diagnosed using the American Diabetic Association (ADA) criteria. We also calculated various HOMA indices for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), Ξ²-cell function (HOMA-Ξ²), insulin sensitivity (HOMA-S), and compensatory Ξ²-cell response using a homeostasis model. BMI, body fat%, and waist circumferences were treated as exposures and all the glycemic parameters and indices as outcomes.ResultsThe median age of the subjects was 16.6 years. The median weight, height, and BMI were 40.7 kg, 151.7 cm, and 17.5 kg/m2, respectively. Prevalence of underweight was 28.8%, and stunting was observed in 30.4%. Thinness and obesity using BMI were observed in 58.4% and 4.2%, respectively. The median body fat% was 22.5, and excess body fat (>35%) was observed in 5.7%. The prevalence of prediabetes was 39.4%. Fasting insulin concentrations, HOMA-IR, and HOMA-Ξ² showed a positive trend across body composition quartiles (p < 0.001). HOMA-S and compensatory Ξ²-cell response showed an inverse trend (p < 0.001). Compared with prediabetic girls in the overweight/obese group, girls most undernourished group had lower median insulin concentrations (8.1 ΞΌIU/ml vs. 17.1 ΞΌIU/ml), lower HOMA-IR (1.1 vs. 2.3), and lower HOMA-Ξ² (75.6 vs. 129.2) but higher sensitivity (87.4 vs. 43.7) (p < 0.001) for all.ConclusionWe have reported a high prevalence of prediabetes among rural adolescent girls with a very low prevalence of obesity. Prediabetes in obesity is driven by hyperinsulinemia and overworking of the pancreas while poor Ξ²-cell function and poor insulin secretion are major drivers in the undernourished group. The high-risk diabetes screening programs are much needed for the undernourished populations. Caution should be exercised for planning the interventions as overfeeding (or overnutrition) is likely to put the populations at risk of development of obesity and insulin resistance

    Differential expression of collectins in human placenta and role in inflammation during spontaneous Labor.

In the present study, we aimed to investigate their placental transcript synthesis, labor associated differential expression and localization at feto-maternal interface, and their functional implication in spontaneous labor. The study involved using feto-maternal interface (placental/decidual tissues) from two groups of healthy pregnant women at term (β‰₯37 weeks of gestation), undergoing either elective C-section with no labor ('NLc' group, nβ€Š=β€Š5), or normal vaginal delivery with spontaneous labor ('SLv' group, nβ€Š=β€Š5). The immune function of SP-D, on term placental explants, was analyzed for cytokine profile using multiplexed cytokine array. SP-A, SP-D and MBL transcripts were observed in the term placenta. The 'SLv' group showed significant up-regulation of SP-D (pβ€Š=β€Š0.001), and down-regulation of SP-A (pβ€Š=β€Š0.005), transcripts and protein compared to the 'NLc' group. Significant increase in 43 kDa and 50 kDa SP-D forms in placental and decidual tissues was associated with the spontaneous labor (p<0.05). In addition, the MMP-9-cleaved form of SP-D (25 kDa) was significantly higher in the placentae of 'SLv' group compared to the 'NLc' group (pβ€Š=β€Š0.002). Labor associated cytokines IL-1Ξ±, IL-1Ξ², IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-Ξ± and MCP-1 showed significant increase (p<0.05) in a dose dependent manner in the placental explants treated with nSP-D and rhSP-D.     Effect of dietary supplementation of rice dried distillers grains (rDDGS) on blood profile in Barbari goats

    The present study was carried out to determine the effect of feeding different levels of rice dried distiller grains (rDDGS) on haemato-biochemical profile of Barbari goats. Twenty-four Barbari goats of 1-2 years of age were randomly divided into four groups (Control, T1, T2 and T3) having six animals in each group. Barbari goats in control group were fed with basal diet comprising of wheat straw, chaffed green maize fodder and compounded concentrate mixture in a ratio of 20:30:50. The animals in T1, T2 and T3 groups were fed with basal diet supplemented with 10, 20 and 30% of rDDGS on dry matter basis, respectively for the period of 90 days. Results revealed no significant differences on blood profile except WBC (Γ—103/Β΅l), neutrophil (%) and lymphocytes (%) in the groups supplemented with rDDGS. Total protein was found highly significant in T2 group followed by T1 and T3 groups. Total immunoglobulin, catalase, TBARS and ALT in rDDGS supplemented groups were also found significantly different. It was concluded that rDDGS can be incorporated in Barbari goat ration up to level of 20% without having any detrimental effect on health of goats
