AbstractObjectiveTo enumerate the diversity of important medicinal plants used traditionally by the local populace in biodiversity rich temperate Himalayan ranges of Bandipora district, Jammu and Kashmir, India.MethodsMethods used to explore the plants with medicinal value and to record associated ethnomedicinal knowledge included semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions and walk-in-the-woods with local knowledgeable persons, traditional practitioners called “Bhoeris” and tribals (Gujjars and Bakkerwals).ResultsDuring plant exploration in this floristically rich Himalayan region, a very interesting and less-known species of the genus Prenanthes L., (Asteraceae) was recorded. On examination, the species was identified as Prenanthes violaefolia Decne., which represents a first report from Kashmir Himalaya, India.ConclusionsPrenanthes violaefolia could serve as an important source of new potent compounds provided that it is subjected to thorough phytochemical and pharmacological investigations

    Spectrosopic Study of Baryons

Baryons are the combination of three quarks(antiquarks) configured by qqq(q¯q¯q¯). They are fermions and obey the Pauli’s principal so that the total wave function must be anti-symmetric. The SU(5) flavor group includes all types of baryons containing zero, one, two or three heavy quarks. The Particle Data Froup (PDG) listed the ground states of most of these baryons and many excited states in their summary Table. The radial and orbital excited states of the baryons are important to calculate, from that the Regge trajectories will be constructed. The quantum numbers will be determined from these slopes and intersects. Thus, we can help experiments to determine the masses of unknown states. The other hadronic properties like decays, magnetic moments can also play a very important role to emphasize the baryons. It is also interesting to determine the properties of exotic baryons nowadays

Antibacterial Activity of Polymer Coated Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles

Cerium oxide nanoparticles have found numerous applications in the biomedical industry due to their strong antioxidant properties. In the current study, we report the influence of nine different physical and chemical parameters: pH, aeration and, concentrations of MgSO4, CaCl2, KCl, natural organic matter, fructose, nanoparticles and Escherichia coli, on the antibacterial activity of dextran coated cerium oxide nanoparticles. A least-squares quadratic regression model was developed to understand the collective influence of the tested parameters on the anti-bacterial activity and subsequently a computer-based, interactive visualization tool was developed. The visualization allows us to elucidate the effect of each of the parameters in combination with other parameters, on the antibacterial activity of nanoparticles. The results indicate that the toxicity of CeO2 NPs depend on the physical and chemical environment; and in a majority of the possible combinations of the nine parameters, non-lethal to the bacteria. In fact, the cerium oxide nanoparticles can decrease the anti-bacterial activity exerted by magnesium and potassium salts

Synthesis of thyroglobulin in thyroid carcinoma patients after radioiodine therapy

Endogenously radioiodinated thyroglobulin (Tg) and the serum concentration of Tg have been measured in patients with metastatic thyroid carcinoma after therapeutic doses of radioiodine. Serial samples of blood were analyzed for both these parameters over a period of 10 to 22 days. The specific activity of Tg (cpm/ng) was calculated for each sample. Among the six patients studied, three showed constant specific activity. The specific activity of the other three fell, indicating the entering of newly synthesized Tg into the circulation. The respective amounts of Tg entering into the circulation in these three patients were 120, 852, and 20,935 ng/ml serum/day
