Dystocia in a ten month old West African Dwarf goat sequelae to faulty breeding practice
Breeding of underage animals, though not encouraged in animal husbandry is still very common due to poor management systems in local settings in Nigeria. Although the worldwide incidence of dystocia in small ruminants is low (<4 %), it is still one of the most presented cases in veterinary clinics. A ten month old female West African Dwarf (WAD) goat was presented at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, University of Ibadan with complaint of difficult labour noticed two days prior to presentation. No medication or assistance was given before presentation at the clinic. It was reported that the animal was primiparous and was kept a under semi-intensive management system with other goats. On clinical examination, an oversize foetal head was stuck in the cervix with a left-lateral deviation of the head complicated by unilateral shoulder flexion. The fetus was dead as a brownish pungent smell was dripping from the nose and mouth. This article describes emergency caesarian section in an underage doe due to absolute fetal oversize
Antihypertensive action of Launaea taraxacifolia and its molecular mechanism of action
Launaea taraxacifolia has been traditionally used for the management of conditions such as cardiovascular,
respiratory, and metabolic diseases. High blood pressure was established by oral administration of L-Nitro Arginine
Methyl Ester (L-NAME) a non-selective inhibitor of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). The antihypertensive
action of the methanol leaf extract of L. taraxacifolia was examined. Fifty male Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups of
10 animals per group: Group A (Distilled water), Group B (Hypertensive rats; 40mg/kg L-NAME), Group C
(Hypertensive rats plus 100 mg/kg extract), Group D (Hypertensive rats plus 200 mg/kg extract) and Group E
(Hypertensive rats plus 10mg/kg of Lisinopril). The treatments were orally administered for five weeks. Haemodynamic
parameters, urinalysis, indices of oxidative stress and immunohistochemistry were determined. Findings from this study
showed that blood pressure parameters, urinary sodium and indices of oxidative stress increased significantly while Invivo
antioxidant defence systems decreased significantly in hypertensive rats. Immunohistochemistry revealed significant
increases in expressions of mineralocorticoid receptor, angiotensin converting enzyme activity and kidney injury
molecule-1 in kidney of hypertensive rats. Treatment with Launeae taraxacifolia normalized blood pressure parameters,
urinary sodium, oxidative stress indices, antioxidant defence system, and serum nitric oxide bioavailability.https://www.pjps.pk/homeam2023Paraclinical Science
Clofibrate, a peroxisome proliferator–activated receptor-alpha (PPARα) agonist, and Its molecular mechanisms of action against sodium fluoride–induced toxicity
AVAILABILITY OF DATA AND MATERIALS : Data will be made available based on request from the corresponding author.Sodium fluoride (NaF) is one of the neglected environmental pollutants. It is ubiquitously found in the soil, water, and environment. Interestingly, fluoride has been extensively utilized for prevention of dental caries and tartar formation, and may be added to mouthwash, mouth rinse, and toothpastes. This study is aimed at mitigating fluoride-induced hypertension and nephrotoxicity with clofibrate, a peroxisome proliferator–activated receptor-alpha (PPARα) agonist. For this study, forty male Wistar rats were used and randomly grouped into ten rats per group, control, sodium fluoride (NaF; 300 ppm) only, NaF plus clofibrate (250 mg/kg) and NaF plus lisinopril (10 mg/kg), respectively, for 7 days. The administration of NaF was by drinking water ad libitum, while clofibrate and lisinopril were administered by oral gavage. Administration of NaF induced hypertension, and was accompanied with exaggerated oxidative stress; depletion of antioxidant defence system; reduced nitric oxide production; increased systolic, diastolic and mean arterial pressure; activation of angiotensin-converting enzyme activity and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB); and testicular apoptosis. Treatment of rats with clofibrate reduced oxidative stress, improved antioxidant status, lowered high blood pressure through the inhibition of angiotensin-converting enzyme activity, mineralocorticoid receptor over-activation, and abrogated testicular apoptosis. Taken together, clofibrate could offer exceptional therapeutic benefit in mitigating toxicity associated with sodium fluoride.Cape Peninsula University of Technology and National Research Foundation (South Africa).https://link.springer.com/journal/12011hj2023Paraclinical Science
Effects of chronic exposure to soluble fractions of spent engine oil on the fertility of male Wistar rats
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of chronic exposure to water-soluble fractions (WSFs) of spent engine oil (SEO) on male fertility in adult male rats.
Materials and Methods: The study included 40 rats, which were randomized into 4 groups (n = 10) and treated for 45 days with different SEO concentrations. Group A (the control) received distilled water, while Groups B, C, and D were given 0.2 ml of 10%, 50%, and 100% concentrations of WSF of SEO, respectively, via oral gavage.
Results: The study found no significant differences in the gonadometric indices, sperm motility, livability, and sperm concentration among the groups, except for slight changes in the weight and length of the testis and the mean diameter of both testes. However, the study found significant changes in the red blood cell, white blood cell, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and neutrophil values following exposure to SEO. The mean values of testosterone, luteinizing hormone, and follicle-stimulating hormone did not show any significant alterations in the experimental groups compared to the control group.
Conclusion: It was concluded that chronic exposure to SEO-soluble fractions can adversely affect the body's physiological and biochemical processes, but it does not appear to have any significant effect on the fertility of male rats. However, further studies are needed to confirm these findings and to investigate the much longer-term effects of SEO exposure on male fertility. [Vet. Res. Notes 2024; 4(2.000): 17-23
Complexity and Nonlinear Dependence of Ionospheric Electron Content and Doppler Frequency Shifts in Propagating HF Radio Signals within Equatorial Regions
The abundance of ions within the ionosphere makes it an important region for both long range and satellite communication systems. However, characterizing the complexity in the ionosphere within the equatorial region of Abuja, with geographic coordinates of 8.99° N and 7.39° E and a geomagnetic latitude of −1.60, and Lagos, with geographic coordinates of 3.27° E and 6.48° N and a dip latitude of −1.72°, is a challenging and daunting task due to the intrinsic and external forces involved. In this study, chaos theory was applied on data from both an HF Doppler sounding system and the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) for the characterization of the ionosphere over these two tropical locations during 2020–2021 with respect to the quality of high-frequency radio signals between the two locations. Our results suggest that the ionosphere at the two locations is chaotic, with its largest Lyapunov exponent values being greater than 0 (0.011≤λ≤0.041) and its correlation dimension being in the range of 1.388≤D2≤1.775. Furthermore, it was revealed that there exists a negative correlation between the state of the ionosphere and signal quality at the two locations. Using transfer entropy, it was confirmed that the ionosphere interfered more with signals during 2020, a year of lower solar activity (sunspot number, 8.8) compared to 2021 (sunspot number, 29.6). On a monthly scale, the influence of the ionosphere on signal quality was found to be complicated. The results obtained in this study will be useful in communication systems design, modelling, and prediction
The external genital conformation of a 4-month old German shepherd intersex dog: a case report
Intersex is usually a rare condition affecting both humans and animals. Reports of intersex in dogs are very few. In this report, we highlighted a case of intersex in a 4-month-old German shepherd dog. The dog was purchased at four weeks of age with intention of breeding following attainment of puberty. Physical observation revealed that the dog had a vulva that was located at inguinal region, and a small penile-like structure of 5 cm which contained an os and ventral urethral opening. No further evaluation was done to ascertain the internal genitalia composition. The present observation of intersex in a dog suggests the need to carefully examine any dog intended for breeding so that abnormalities such as intersex will not be propagated in any dog breeding program
Novel antihypertensive action of rutin is mediated via inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme/mineralocorticoid receptor/angiotensin 2 type 1 receptor (ATR1) signaling pathways in uninephrectomized hypertensive rats
Hypertension is the most common cardiovascular disease that affects approximately 26% of adult population, worldwide. Rutin is one of the important flavonoids that is consumed in the daily diet, and found in many food items, vegetables, and beverages. Uninephrectomy (UNX) of the left kidney was performed, followed by induction of hypertension. The rats were randomly divided into four groups of 10 rats: group 1—Sham-operated rats; group 2—UNX rats, group 3—UNX-L-NAME (40 mg/kg) plus rutin (100 mg/kg bwt), and groups 4—UNX-L-NAME plus lisinopril (10 mg/kg bwt), orally for 3 weeks. Results revealed significant heightening of arterial pressure and oxidative stress indices, while hypertensive rats treated with rutin had lower expressions of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) and mineralocorticoid receptor in uninephrectomized rats. Together, rutin as a novel antihypertensive flavonoid could provide an unimaginable benefits for the management of hypertension through inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme and mineralocorticoid receptor.
PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS : Hypertension has been reported to be the most common cardiovascular disease, affecting approximately 26% of the adult population worldwide with predicted prevalence to increase by 60% by 2025. Recent advances in phytomedicine have shown flavonoids to be very helpful in the treatment of many diseases. Flavonoids have been used in the treatment and management of cardiovascular diseases, obesity and hypertension. The study revealed that rutin, a known flavonoid inhibited angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), angiotensin 2 type 1 receptor (ATR1), and mineralocorticoid receptor (MCR), comparable to the classic ACE inhibitor, Lisinopril, indicating the novel antihypertensive property of rutin. Therefore, flavonoids such as rutin found in fruits and vegetables could, therefore, serve as an antihypertensive drug regimen. Combining all, functional foods rich in flavonoids could be used as potential therapeutic candidates for managing uninephrectomized hypertensive patients.Cape Peninsula University of Technology and National Research Foundation (South Africa)http://www.wileyonlinelibrary.com/journal/jfbc2021-10-21hj2021Paraclinical Science
