Aisha Bano - The Role of KCNQ (Kv7) Potassium Channels in Schizophrenia Deficits

For years, studies have been conducted to treat the positive and negative symptoms and cognitive deficits of schizophrenia; it has allowed to treat the positive symptoms through regulation of dopaminergic neurons and dopamine pathways; however, we still do not know how to treat the negative symptoms and cognitive deficits. The reason we cannot treat them is due to a lack of adequate understanding of the underlying pathology which manifests itself in the behavior. Over the years, there have been multiple proposed hypotheses regarding the underlying pathology, and accordingly, medication were developed to regulate the variety of pathways in the brain but each of them has failed. Under the mentorship of Dr. Behnam Ghasemzadeh, experiments are being conducted to regulate the activity of KCNQ potassium ion channel to ameliorate the negative symptoms and cognitive deficits of schizophrenia. The experiments are being conducted using animal-models of schizophrenia like-effect. The results suggest that decrease in the activity of the KCNQ potassium channels, leading to an increase in the neuronal activity, may be able to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia.https://epublications.marquette.edu/mcnair_2013/1007/thumbnail.jp

Who is Jesus? Reflections on S. Endo\u27s A Life of Jesus

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay\u27s first paragraph. Shusaku Endo was a Japanese author born in Tokyo in 1923. He was raised by his single mother who became a fervent believer in Christianity. With her influence, Endo himself was baptized by the age of twelve. Having grown up in Japan, Endo was obviously very knowledgeable about Japanese religion and customs and most especially Japanese ideals. He claimed that “the Japanese have a traditional saying to the effect that the four most dreadful things on the earth are fire, earthquakes, thunderbolts, and fathers” (4). Obviously, as this quote illustrates, the image of a strict father is not very appealing to the Japanese; instead, according to Endo, the Japanese prefer the image of a maternal figure. This is precisely why, Endo argues, that the Christian religion is such a minority in Japan. Because God has always been depicted as a stern father in western cultures, Christianity has never caught on in Japan. So to help his Japanese audience better understand his beloved religion, Shusaku Endo wrote the novel called A Life of Jesus. To accomplish this purpose, Endo depicted God and Jesus in a very different way from which western readers are used to seeing. Because the Japanese identify more with the maternal side of things and are more “responsive to one who „suffers with [them]‟”, Endo decided to depict God as a caring maternal figure and Jesus as a man who had such great love that he was willing to die even for those who did not yet believe (1). In this way Endo is able to greatly bring out the humanity of Jesus. When A Life of Jesus is read with this perspective in mind, it makes a lot more sense in terms of the arguments made, the type of soft language used, and the tear jerking metaphors presented. Overall, this book serves its purpose, which is to present and in a way to “sell” Christianity to a Japanese based audience who know very little, if anything, about Jesus

Mobile Phone Text Processing and Question-Answering

Mobile phone text messaging between mobile users and information services is a growing area of Information Systems. Users may require the service to provide an answer to queries, or may, in wikistyle, want to contribute to the service by texting in some information within the service’s domain of discourse. Given the volume of such messaging it is essential to do the processing through an automated service. Further, in the case of repeated use of the service, the quality of such a response has the potential to benefit from a dynamic user profile that the service can build up from previous texts of the same user. This project will investigate the potential for creating such intelligent mobile phone services and aims to produce a computational model to enable their efficient implementation. To make the project feasible, the scope of the automated service is considered to lie within a limited domain of, for example, information about entertainment within a specific town centre. The project will assume the existence of a model of objects within the domain of discourse, hence allowing the analysis of texts within the context of a user model and a domain model. Hence, the project will involve the subject areas of natural language processing, language engineering, machine learning, knowledge extraction, and ontological engineering

Response to “A rose by any other name” published in the 2014 July edition of the Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine

Dear Sir, We are grateful for the opportunity to reply to the comments made by Dr Davis. Our paper was developed in response to the common misunderstanding among forensic physicians of the roles of witnesses in the criminal courts and following reflection on the decision in Jones v Kaney. We indeed sympathise with Dr Davis' view that doctors who the courts recognise as “forensic physicians” should already have “prior knowledge and understanding of most of the information” outlined in our article

Increasing the quality of student outcomes by using e-learning system in computer programming courses

Teaching computing courses is a major challenge for the majority of lecturers in Libyan higher learning institutions. These courses contain numerous abstract concepts that cannot be easily explained using traditional educational methods. This paper describes the rationale, design, development and implementation stages of an e-learning package (including multimedia resources such as simulations, animations, and videos) using the ASSURE model. This training package can be used by students before they attend practical computer lab sessions, preparing them by developing technical skills and applying concepts and theories presented in lecture through supplementary study and exercise

Curvature-Matter Coupling Effects on Axial Gravitational Waves

In this paper, we investigate the propagation of axial gravitational waves in the background of the flat FRW universe in f(R,T)f(R,T) theory. The field equations are obtained for unperturbed as well as axially perturbed FRW metric. These field equations are solved simultaneously to obtain the unknown perturbation parameters. We find that the assumed perturbations can affect matter as well as four-velocity. Moreover, ignoring the material perturbations we explicitly obtain an expression for four-velocity. It is concluded that axial gravitational waves in the curvature-matter coupling background can produce cosmological rotation or have memory effect if the wave profile has a discontinuity at the wavefront.Comment: 17 pages, no figure, to appear in EPJ
