In-plane graphene/boron-nitride heterostructures as an efficient metal-free electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction

    Get PDF
Exploiting metal-free catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and understanding their catalytic mechanisms are vital for the development of fuel cells (FCs). Our study has demonstrated that in-plane heterostructures of graphene and boron nitride (G/BN) can serve as an efficient metal-free catalyst for the ORR, in which the C-N interfaces of G/BN heterostructures act as reactive sites. The formation of water at the heterointerface is both energetically and kinetically favorable via a four-electron pathway. Moreover, the water formed can be easily released from the heterointerface, and the catalytically active sites can be regenerated for the next cycle. Since G/BN heterostructures with controlled domain sizes have been successfully synthesized in recent reports (e.g. Nat. Nanotechnol., 2013, 8, 119), our results highlight the great potential of such heterostructures as a promising metal-free catalyst for the ORR in FCs

    HELIPORT PAVEMENT DESIGNING FEATURES

In recent years, there has been a significant progress in helicopter traffic, its volume increasing every year. To solve the transport problem of megacities, first of all heliports should be built in the largest cities, with the corporate sector as the customers, and the possibility of excursion transport flights not excluded. UTair-Ukraine (the world’s largest airline in terms of helicopter fleet operating more than 300 helicopters of various models) plans to actively develop the helicopter business in Ukraine. To date, only one modern helipad has been built in the capital of Ukraine – Dnipro-1. Kyiv needs at least 19 helicopter pads located in such a way as to reduce the traffic load on roads and provide an opportunity to evacuate the population in case of an emergency. The article considers the history of the development of designing hard surface airfields and heliports design, the main heliport parts, determination of the helipad geometric parameters, helicopters classification by their impact on the covering. In recent years, there has been a significant progress in helicopter traffic, its volume increasing every year. A New Model of Ultracapacitors Based on Fractal Fundamentals

    Get PDF
An intuitive model is proposed in this paper to describe the electrical behavior of certain ultracapacitors. The model is based on a simple expression that can be fully characterized by five real numbers. In this paper, the measured impedances of three ultracapacitors as a function of frequency are compared to model results. There is good agreement between the model and measurements. Results presented in a previous study are also reviewed and the paper demonstrates that those results are also consistent with the newly described model

Overexpression of long non-coding RNA NORAD promotes invasion and migration in malignant melanoma via regulating the MIR-205-EGLN2 pathway.

Growing evidence suggests that long non-coding RNAs NORAD and miR-205 play a significant role in regulating cancer progression and metastasis. In this study, high expression of NORAD was firstly observed in melanoma tissues and human malignant melanoma cell lines, our aim was to study the interaction of them in the process of invasion and migration of malignant melanoma cells. NORAD, miR-205, and EGLN2 mRNA level in MM cells was detected by qRT-PCR. In situ hybridization (ISH) was performed to detect NORAD expression in MM tissues specimens. Effects of NORAD and miR-205 on Prolyl hydroxylase 2 (EGLN2) expression was explored by western blot in MM cells line. Dual-luciferase reporter assay was performed to verify the interaction relationship between NORAD and miR-205, as well as, miR-205 and EGLN2. Transwell assay was conducted to explore the effects of NORAD and miR-205 in vitro. Xenografts in nude mice experiment were used to confirm the role of NORAD and miR-205 in vivo. In vitro, NORAD knockdown significantly inhibited migration and invasion of malignant melanoma cells and elevated the expression of miR-205, there was an interaction between miR-205 and NORAD in the RNA-induced silencing complex. Upregulation of miR-205 induced significant inhibition of migratory and invasive ability compared with the scrambled control. However, downregulating NORAD largely reversed this effect. Furthermore, the regulatory effects of miR-205 on EGLN2 levels and the induction of endoplasmic reticulum stress were reversed by NORAD. In vivo, deletion of miR-205 induced tumor growth in nude mice. NORAD may play critical roles in tumorigenesis and progression of malignant melanoma by regulating of the miR-205-EGLN2 pathway, and may serve as a new therapeutic target

Deletion of the meq gene significantly decreases immunosuppression in chickens caused by pathogenic marek's disease virus

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Marek's disease virus (MDV) causes an acute lymphoproliferative disease in chickens, resulting in immunosuppression, which is considered to be an integral aspect of the pathogenesis of Marek's disease (MD). A recent study showed that deletion of the Meq gene resulted in loss of transformation of T-cells in chickens and a Meq-null virus, rMd5ΔMeq, could provide protection superior to CVI988/Rispens.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the present study, to investigate whether the Meq-null virus could be a safe vaccine candidate, we constructed a Meq deletion strain, GX0101ΔMeq, by deleting both copies of the Meq gene from a pathogenic MDV, GX0101 strain, which was isolated in China. Pathogenesis experiments showed that the GX0101ΔMeq virus was fully attenuated in specific pathogen-free chickens because none of the infected chickens developed Marek's disease-associated lymphomas. The study also evaluated the effects of GX0101ΔMeq on the immune system in chickens after infection with GX0101ΔMeq virus. Immune system variables, including relative lymphoid organ weight, blood lymphocytes and antibody production following vaccination against AIV and NDV were used to assess the immune status of chickens. Experimental infection with GX0101ΔMeq showed that deletion of the Meq gene significantly decreased immunosuppression in chickens caused by pathogenic MDV.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These findings suggested that the Meq gene played an important role not only in tumor formation but also in inducing immunosuppressive effects in MDV-infected chickens.</p

SCN5A Variants: Association With Cardiac Disorders

    Get PDF
The SCN5A gene encodes the alpha subunit of the main cardiac sodium channel Nav1.5. This channel predominates inward sodium current (INa) and plays a critical role in regulation of cardiac electrophysiological function. Since 1995, SCN5A variants have been found to be causatively associated with Brugada syndrome, long QT syndrome, cardiac conduction system dysfunction, dilated cardiomyopathy, etc. Previous genetic, electrophysiological, and molecular studies have identified the arrhythmic and cardiac structural characteristics induced by SCN5A variants. However, due to the variation of disease manifestations and genetic background, impact of environmental factors, as well as the presence of mixed phenotypes, the detailed and individualized physiological mechanisms in various SCN5A-related syndromes are not fully elucidated. This review summarizes the current knowledge of SCN5A genetic variations in different SCN5A-related cardiac disorders and the newly developed therapy strategies potentially useful to prevent and treat these disorders in clinical setting
