    Maternal Undernutrition and Breast Milk Macronutrient Content Are Not Associated with Weight in Breastfed Infants at 1 and 3 Months after Delivery

    This study examined whether maternal nutritional intake and breast milk macronutrient content influence the weight of breastfed infants. We investigated 129 healthy mothers with singleton babies born from July 2016 to December 2017 in a university hospital in Tokyo, Japan. Information was obtained by a self-administered food frequency questionnaire at 1 (valid response n = 92; mean age, 34 years) and 3 (n = 57) months after delivery. Breast milk was sampled at 1 and 3 months and the macronutrient contents were analyzed. The average pre-pregnancy body mass index and weight gain during pregnancy were 20.7 +/- 2.6 kg/m(2) and 9.6 +/- 3.7 kg, respectively. At 1 month, average maternal calorie intake was 1993 +/- 417 kcal/day, which was lower than the intake recommended by Japanese Dietary Reference Intakes for breastfeeding mothers. There were no significant differences with regard to maternal calorie and protein intake, and breast milk macronutrient content between breastfed infants with weight above and below the 25th percentile of its distribution at both 1 and 3 months. This study suggests that suboptimal calorie intake by breastfeeding mothers and breast milk macronutrient content were not associated with weight of their infants at 1 and 3 months after delivery

    A 48-year-old man who weighed 216 kg was significantly overweight with a body mass index (BMI)of 75.6kg/m2, and was unable to walk due to disuse syndrome. Because of the psychological and social problems in the background, a psychological examination was performed and the staff took time to build a trusting relationship with the patient, taking into account his characteristics. With diet and rehabilitation, he was able to lose weight to 124kg and BMI 43.9kg/m2 over 600 days, and was able to walk with assistive devices and defecate by himself. The patient was discharged from our hospital after a series of multidisciplinary meetings with medical, nursing, welfare, and governmental agencies to create an environment for home recuperation. The reasons for the improvement to enable him to be discharged from the hospital were due to the multi-disciplinary meetings among the staff inside and outside the hospital, information sharing and advanced coordination, and smooth communication with the patient by taking into account his characteristics from a psychological standpoint

    “笑顔の花!咲かせカルタ”の作成と地域づくり

    地区住民と共に地域づくりを推進する“カルタ”を作成し、その活用の可能性検討した。作成した “カルタ”の“読み札”は『どんな地区であればよいのか』地区住民から情報を求め、その情報を基に44枚作成した。“取り札”は、地区の事業と歴史文化や自然などの資源を基に94枚作成した。なお、“読み札”と“取り札”はコミュニティ・アズ・パートナーモデルを用いて内容のバランスを調整した。完成した“カルタを、地区の児童クラブに通う小学校1年生から3年生の48名で実施し、対象に合わせてルールを工夫することで小学校低学年でも活用できた。その結果、“カルタ”の活用により、地区におけるヘルスプロモーションが促進できると推察された

    Discovery of 2,6-Dihalopurines as Stomata Opening Inhibitors: Implication of an LRX-mediated H+-ATPase Phosphorylation Pathway

    Stomata are pores in the leaf epidermis of plants and their opening and closing regulate gas exchange and water transpiration. Stomatal movements play key roles in both plant growth and stress responses. In recent years, small molecules regulating stomatal movements have been used as a powerful tool in mechanistic studies, as well as key players for agricultural applications. Therefore, the development of new molecules regulating stomatal movement and the elucidation of their mechanisms have attracted much attention. We herein describe the discovery of 2,6-dihalopurines, AUs, as a new stomatal opening inhibitor, and their mechanistic study. Based on biological assays, AUs may involve in the pathway related with plasma membrane H+-ATPase phosphorylation. In addition, we identified leucine-rich repeat extensin proteins (LRXs), LRX3, LRX4 and LRX5 as well as RALF, as target protein candidates of AUs by affinity based pull down assay and molecular dynamics simulation. The mechanism of stomatal movement related with the LRXs–RALF is an unexplored pathway, and therefore further studies may lead to the discovery of new signaling pathways and regulatory factors in the stomatal movement
