    Does the Salary of Elementary and Middle School Teachers Affect Students’ Participation in Extracurricular Tutoring?

    Based on the data of China Family Panel Studies 2016 (CFPS 2016), this study analyzed the effect of teacher wage index on students’ participation in extracurricular tutoring through a two-layer linear model. We found that the wage index of elementary and middle schools teachers in China is generally low, and this index had a significant negative impact on students’ participation in extracurricular tutoring, i.e., the lower the teacher’s wage index, the higher the participation rate of students’ extracurricular tutoring. Governments at all levels should increase financial investment in elementary and middle schools teachers’ salaries. Efforts to improve the salary of elementary and middle schools teachers upon the teacher’s wage index as a reference will help to reduce the supply and demand of extracurricular tutoring in the basic education in China, and will also facilitate the implementation of the policy of prohibiting in-service teachers from participating in extracurricular tutoring

    Polymer-stabilised blue phase liquid crystals (PS-BPLC) have attracted many attentions in the area of display and photonic applications because of the superior electro-optical properties. Before application, the problem of high driving voltage should be resolved first. In this report, a new chiral monomer (C5011) has been synthesised and its influence on PS-BPLC was investigated.     Alcohol exposure leads to unrecoverable cardiovascular defects along with edema and motor function changes in developing zebrafish larvae

    Maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy can cause a series of developmental disorders in the fetus called FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome). In the present study we exposed zebrafish embryos to 1% and 2% alcohol and observed the morphology of heart and blood vessels during and after exposure to investigate motor function alterations, and damage and recovery to the cardiovascular system. The results showed that alcohol exposure could induce heart deformation, slower heart rate, and incomplete blood vessels and pericardium. After stopping exposure, larvae exposed to 1% alcohol could recover only in heart morphology, but larvae in 2% alcohol could not recover either morphology or function of cardiovascular system. The edema-like characteristics in the 2% alcohol group became more conspicuous afterwards, with destruction in the dorsal aorta, coarctation in segmental arteries and a decrease in motor function, implying more serious unrecoverable cardiovascular defects in the 2% group. The damaged blood vessels in the 2% alcohol group resulted in an alteration in permeability and a decrease of blood volume, which were the causes of edema in pathology. These findings contribute towards a better understanding of ethanol-induced cardiovascular abnormalities and co-syndrome in patients with FAS, and warns against excessive maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy

    Synthesis and mesomorphic properties of benzoxazole derivatives with lateral multifluoro substituents

    <p>Fluorinated aromatics is generally chosen as mesogenic cores to design novel liquid crystal compounds. Here, a series of benzoxazole derivatives with laterally multifluorinated biphenyl units, 2-(3′,3-difluoro −4′-alkoxy-1,1′-biphenyl-4-yl)-benzoxazole derivatives (coded as nPF(3)PF(3)Bx), are synthesized and characterized, where methyl and nitro moieties are selected as terminal groups to investigate the effects of different polar substituents on the liquid crystal properties. The compounds nPF(3)PF(3)Bx show enantiotropic mesophases with mesophase ranges of 0–40°C and 0–63°C on heating and cooling for hydrogen-terminated derivatives (nPF(3)PF(3)BH), 43–93°C and 54–123°C for methyl-terminated ones (nPF(3)PF(3)BM), 60–108°C and 74–152°C for nitro terminated ones (nPF(3)PF(3)BN), respectively. They exhibit photoluminescence emission peaks at 390–392 nm and UV–vis absorption bands with maxima at 327–330 nm, respectively. The results reveal that lateral multifluoro substituents lead to a decrease in melting/clearing points, while electron-withdrawing terminal nitro moiety results in increases in both melting point and mesophase range.</p

    Nematic mesophase enhanced via lateral monofluorine substitution on benzoxazole-liquid crystals

    <p>Fluorine is widely used as a lateral substituent to modify the physical properties of liquid crystals. Here, laterally monofluorinated compounds, 2-(4ʹ-alkoxy-2-fluorobiphenyl-4-yl)-benzoxazole derivatives (nPPF(2)Bx) bearing different substituents (H, CH<sub>3</sub>, NO<sub>2</sub>, coded as nPPF(2)BH, nPPF(2)BM and nPPF(2)BN, respectively) at 5-position, were synthesised and characterised. It is interesting to note that these only display enantiotropic nematic mesophases with mesophase ranges of 12–28°C and 13–45°C on heating and cooling for nPPF(2)BH, 46–97°C and 62–120°C for nPPF(2)BM and 82–108°C and 87–113°C for nPPF(2)BN, which are very different from the corresponding monofluorine-substituted analogue (compounds I) with enantiotropic smectic or smectic/nematic mesophases. The enhanced nematic mesophase is attributed to the reduced π–π interaction/conjugation resulting from the twisted structure of the molecule caused by the introduction of a fluorine atom into the inter-ring of the biphenyl unit. These results suggest that modification of the monofluorine substituent position is an effective method to improve the nematic mesophase in benzoxazole-liquid crystals.</p
