Current approaches to the development of airport retail : a sales performance analysis and case study
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2002.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 43-45).This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.During the 1990s, a number of airports around the United States radically changed the way they managed the retail space in their terminals. Departing from the traditional master concessionaire/operator model, airports began experimenting with branded direct leasing programs and outsourcing to third party developers. Serving over 700 million domestic airline passengers annually, and until recently overlooked by the retail development community at large, the airport network presents a significant market for retail development. We review the issues surrounding airport retail management, the genesis of the branded, mall- style and developer-run programs, and evaluate the relative performance of different management models both quantitatively and qualitatively, based on recent sales data and case studies of a number of airports. Data for this report was collected June/July 2002 in the form of publicly available data from industry trade groups and journals, interviews with members of airport business offices, developers active in airport retail, and firms providing concessionaire service to airports.by Ahron B. Detection of Near Horizontal Muons with the HAWC Observatory
The HAWC (High Altitude Water Cherenkov) gamma ray observatory is able to
observe muons with nearly horizontal trajectories. HAWC is located at an
altitude of 4100 meters a.s.l. on the Sierra Negra volcano in Mexico. The HAWC
detector is composed of 300 water tanks, each 7.3 m in diameter and 4.5 m tall,
densely packed over a physical area of 22,000 m. Previous and current
experiments have observed high zenith angle (near horizontal) muons at or near
sea level. HAWC operates as a hodoscope able to observe multi-TeV muons at
zenith angles greater than 75 degrees. This is the first experiment to measure
near horizontal muons at high altitude and with large ( 10 m) separations
for multiple muons. These muons are distinguishable from extensive air showers
by observing near horizontal particles propagating with the speed of light. The
proximity of Sierra Negra and Pico de Orizaba volcanoes provides an additional
measurement of muons with rock overburdens of several km water equivalent. We
will present the angular distribution and rate at which HAWC observes these
muon eventsComment: Presented at the 35th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2017),

Simulation of Near Horizontal Muons and Muon Bundles for the HAWC Observatory with CORSIKA
The HAWC (High Altitude Water Cerenkov) gamma ray observatory observes muons
with nearly-horizontal trajectories corresponding to zenith angles greater than
. HAWC is located at an altitude of 4100 meters a.s.l. (70 deg.
atmospheric depth of 2400 g/cm) on the extinct volcano, Sierra Negra in
Mexico. In this poster, we summarize the CORSIKA and GEANT4 as well as
toy-model based simulations performed to determine the effective area of HAWC
to muons from high zenith angle cosmic ray primaries. We are developing an
updated GEANT4 based detector response simulation that includes a model of the
volcanoes that are located near HAWC. These simulations are investigating the
capability to use muon multiplicity and rates to differentiate between the
primary particle composition (proton or iron) and measure the primary energy.Comment: Presented at the 35th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2017),

Israeli Landmine Policy and Related Regional Activity
Although the dangers posed by landmines are particularly acute in the Middle East, responses to the Ottawa Convention are limited. Jordan, Sudan, Tunisia and Qatar are State Parties, and Algeria has signed but not ratified the Ottawa Convention. The lack of signatories in the region reflects the continuing conflict and instability as well as the role that mines play in territorial defense.
In Israel, there is significant support for both the concept and effort to abolish landmines, but security considerations and continued warfare outweigh arguments in favor of accession to the Convention. Israel is active in international cooperative programs to clear landmines as well as in rehabilitation and education programs
The Israeli Defense Force\u27s Humanitarian Demining Efforts
The Israel Defense Force (IDF) Engineering Corps is the mine action center of Israel. Currently, IDF is engaged in various activities in response to the Palestinian terror campaign and does not have the resources to participate in international demining programs. However, the Israeli government views the issue of international cooperation in the areas of mine clearance, mine awareness and mine victim rehabilitation to be of major importance, despite the difficult budgetary situation. In addition, IDF continues to prioritize mine action internally

A Theory of Stock Price Responses to Alternative Corporate Cash Disbursement Methods: Stock Repurchase and Dividends
This paper develops a model in which managers can signal their firms' true values by using either a dividend or a stock repurchase or both. The authors explain a number of sylized facts about these cash- disbursement mechanisms, particularly those concerning the relative magnitudes of stock price responses to dividends and repurchases. Most importantly, they explain why a stock repurchase elicits a significantly higher price response, on average, than a dividend announcement.
