THE U.S. FOLKLORE, PROVERBS, AND ECONOMIC BEHAVIOR

    Get PDF
Social scientists strongly believe that the cultural values and norms motivate, guide, and influence the behavior of each and every society. However, studying the relationship between culture and behavior, notably economic behavior, is not very popular in the literature, mainly because of the vague and broad definition of the culture. Thereby this paper provides a narrow definition of the culture as “the set of beliefs and values that are often revealed in folklore of the country, where proverbs are the most concise form of the verbal folklore genres.” Using this definition, the paper attempts to relate several types of economic behaviors such as intertemporal choice of consumption, investment, risk taking, work and education, to a set of popular sayings, idioms and proverbs that are circulated in the American society. The paper finds that the observed economic behavior in the U.S. is influenced to an extent by the American proverbs and sayings

Abstract Objective:To grade prostatic carcinomas according to the Gleason’s Grading System and see whether the frequency of incidental carcinoma is significant. Method:Retrospective study of all consecutive cases of prostatic adenocarcinoma diagnosed at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) between January 1st, 1996 and December 31st, 1999. Setting:The histopathology section of AKUH, Karachi. Observation:Prostatic adenocarcinomas comprised 14.2% of all prostate specimens. There were 3 types of specimens i.e. transurethral resection, suprapubic prostatectomies and core bIopsies. The mean age was 72.1 years; 68.1% patients were 65 years or older. The majority of the tumours were moderately differentiated (Gleason’s scores 5,6 or 7). Grading was not possible in most core biopsies. The frequency of Incidental carcinoma was 31.4%. Conclusion:Majority of tumours were moderate to poorly differentiated, Indicating that prostatic adenocarcinoma Is an aggressive disease. The frequency of incidental carcinoma was also high emphasizing need for more aggressive prostatic evaluation in the vulnerable age group (JPMA 52:54;2002)

Interference coordination for LTE-advanced and FM broadcasting interoperability

The surest way to guarantee that multiple wireless systems can concurrently exist harmlessly, when operating in the same or adjacent channel, is by analyzing spectrum overlapping. This paper proposes a more accurate model to evaluate the interference power from co-channel and adjacent channel of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-based long term evolution-advanced (LTE-Advanced) towards broadcasting frequency modulation systems at 800 MHz. Power spectral density overlapping factor is employed, and closed form of the interference power loss is derived. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method evaluates more exact interference power than the advanced minimum coupling loss (A-MCL) method, where the co-channel and adjacent channel interference powers are reduced by 1.3 and 3 dB, correspondingly, compared to that obtained using the AMCL method. This decreases the minimum separation distance between the two systems, which can eventually lead to efficient radio spectrum resources utilization

A New Equivalent Circuit of a Salient-Pole Synchronous Machine and Its Phasor Interpretation

    Get PDF
This paper examines a shortcoming of the classical phasor diagram of a salient-pole synchronous machine based on the well-established two-reaction theory. Unlike in the phasor diagram of a smooth-air-gap machine, it is not possible to readily identify the internally-developed electromagnetic power of a salient-pole synchronous machine from this phasor diagram. By defining new machine reactances, a single equivalent circuit of a salient-pole synchronous machine is proposed together with a phasor diagram where the internally-developed electromagnetic power is made apparent. The revised two-reaction theory is illustrated using the mathematical model of a two-phase salient-pole synchronous machine whose equations are manipulated using complex space vectors instead of traditional matrix transformations

Patterns of technology transfer among the Arab Gulf States: opportunities and challenges

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the incentives, options, and obstacles to transfer technology to the Arab Gulf region. Design/methodology/approach – A validated and reliable instrument was used to gather data from former expatriates who were employed by American-based multinational corporations. Findings – The results indicate that the Arab Gulf States possess a wide range of resources and incentives offered to investors which contribute to the Gulf’s attractiveness. At the same time, however, industrialization efforts, including transfer of technology to the Gulf region, are hampered by lack of industrial management expertise and technical skills among the relatively small national population and by resistance to new forms of technology by local residents. Research limitations/implications – Technology transfer cannot be seen as the only resort for attaining growth rates. Education, innovation, and basic science are necessary to achieve economic development. In addition, the Arab Gulf States must address serious demographic challenges. Originality/value – This exploratory, empirical investigation provides insight into the opportunities and challenges of technology transfer to the Gulf region. It identifies areas that need further investigation

Tele-Oral Oncology: Reinvigorating Telemedicine in Oral Cancer Care

    Get PDF
Introduction: In recent years, we have witnessed significant growth in the employment of technological advancements in health-care practices. These advancements have increased the practicality and utility oftelemedicine applications. The aim of this focused review is to provide in-depth insights into the current state of telemedicine in oral oncology. Observations: Tele-oral oncology (TOO) is a rapidly emerging field andhas provided new opportunities to transform oral cancer care into the 22nd century. This review will explore topics related to TOO as they pertain to consultation, oral cancer management in underserved areas, patienteducation and e-learning applications. Conclusion and Relevance: The utilisation of TOO is hindered by many challenges and this review addresses the potential limitations that prevent the integration of TOO in routine oral cancer care. A working model that circumvents the potential shortcomings of TOO is also proposed

Green Human Resource Management Bundle Practices And Sustainable Manufacturing Performance: Understanding Potential Relationships

open access articleIn this era of the modern business environment, organizations have to constantly adapt and react to new ecological challenges. Therefore, it is critical for organizations to adopt various eco-friendly practices and processes and involve their employees in such practices; thereby achieving organizations‘ environmental goals. The objective of this paper is to investigate the impact of Green Human Resources Management (GHRM) practices as a bundle on environmental, economic, social and operational performance within the manufacturing sector of Palestine. The paper employs a quantitative research methodology. Data collected through surveys from 121 Palestinian manufacturing firms to test hypotheses using partial least square of structural equation model (PLS-SEM). The statistical analysis revealed that GHRM bundle practices have a positive influence on the four dimensions of organizational performance. The findings of this study can help manufacturing firms in identifying efficacious tactics for adopting GHRM practices that take part in sustainable development
