Landslide susceptibility mapping using multi-criteria evaluation techniques in Chittagong Metropolitan Area, Bangladesh
Landslides are a common hazard in the highly urbanized hilly areas in Chittagong Metropolitan Area (CMA), Bangladesh. The main cause of the landslides is torrential rain in short period of time. This area experiences several landslides each year, resulting in casualties, property damage, and economic loss. Therefore, the primary objective of this research is to produce the Landslide Susceptibility Maps for CMA so that appropriate landslide disaster risk reduction strategies can be developed. In this research, three different Geographic Information System-based Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis methods—the Artificial Hierarchy Process (AHP), Weighted Linear Combination (WLC), and Ordered Weighted Average (OWA)—were applied to scientifically assess the landslide susceptible areas in CMA. Nine different thematic layers or landslide causative factors were considered. Then, seven different landslide susceptible scenarios were generated based on the three weighted overlay techniques. Later, the performances of the methods were validated using the area under the relative operating characteristic curves. The accuracies of the landslide susceptibility maps produced by the AHP, WLC_1, WLC_2, WLC_3, OWA_1, OWA_2, and OWA_3 methods were found as 89.80, 83.90, 91.10, 88.50, 90.40, 95.10, and 87.10 %, respectively. The verification results showed satisfactory agreement between the susceptibility maps produced and the existing data on the 20 historical landslide locations
Erasure Multiple Descriptions
We consider a binary erasure version of the n-channel multiple descriptions
problem with symmetric descriptions, i.e., the rates of the n descriptions are
the same and the distortion constraint depends only on the number of messages
received. We consider the case where there is no excess rate for every k out of
n descriptions. Our goal is to characterize the achievable distortions D_1,
D_2,...,D_n. We measure the fidelity of reconstruction using two distortion
criteria: an average-case distortion criterion, under which distortion is
measured by taking the average of the per-letter distortion over all source
sequences, and a worst-case distortion criterion, under which distortion is
measured by taking the maximum of the per-letter distortion over all source
sequences. We present achievability schemes, based on random binning for
average-case distortion and systematic MDS (maximum distance separable) codes
for worst-case distortion, and prove optimality results for the corresponding
achievable distortion regions. We then use the binary erasure multiple
descriptions setup to propose a layered coding framework for multiple
descriptions, which we then apply to vector Gaussian multiple descriptions and
prove its optimality for symmetric scalar Gaussian multiple descriptions with
two levels of receivers and no excess rate for the central receiver. We also
prove a new outer bound for the general multi-terminal source coding problem
and use it to prove an optimality result for the robust binary erasure CEO
problem. For the latter, we provide a tight lower bound on the distortion for
\ell messages for any coding scheme that achieves the minimum achievable

Mechanical Surface Waves Accompany Action Potential Propagation
Many studies have shown that a mechanical displacement of the axonal membrane
accompanies the electrical pulse defining the Action Potential (AP). Despite a
large and diverse body of experimental evidence, there is no theoretical
consensus either for the physical basis of this mechanical wave nor its
interdependence with the electrical signal. In this manuscript we present a
model for these mechanical displacements as arising from the driving of surface
wave modes in which potential energy is stored in elastic properties of the
neuronal membrane and cytoskeleton while kinetic energy is carried by the
axoplasmic fluid. In our model these surface waves are driven by the traveling
wave of electrical depolarization that characterizes the AP, altering the
compressive electrostatic forces across the membrane as it passes. This driving
leads to co-propagating mechanical displacements, which we term Action Waves
(AWs). Our model for these AWs allows us to predict, in terms of elastic
constants, axon radius and axoplasmic density and viscosity, the shape of the
AW that should accompany any traveling wave of voltage, including the AP
predicted by the Hodgkin and Huxley (HH) equations. We show that our model
makes predictions that are in agreement with results in experimental systems
including the garfish olfactory nerve and the squid giant axon. We expect our
model to serve as a framework for understanding the physical origins and

Transonic airfoil design for helicopter rotor applications
Despite the fact that the flow over a rotor blade is strongly influenced by locally three-dimensional and unsteady effects, practical experience has always demonstrated that substantial improvements in the aerodynamic performance can be gained by improving the steady two-dimensional charateristics of the airfoil(s) employed. The two phenomena known to have great impact on the overall rotor performance are: (1) retreating blade stall with the associated large pressure drag, and (2) compressibility effects on the advancing blade leading to shock formation and the associated wave drag and boundary-layer separation losses. It was concluded that: optimization routines are a powerful tool for finding solutions to multiple design point problems; the optimization process must be guided by the judicious choice of geometric and aerodynamic constraints; optimization routines should be appropriately coupled to viscous, not inviscid, transonic flow solvers; hybrid design procedures in conjunction with optimization routines represent the most efficient approach for rotor airfroil design; unsteady effects resulting in the delay of lift and moment stall should be modeled using simple empirical relations; and inflight optimization of aerodynamic loads (e.g., use of variable rate blowing, flaps, etc.) can satisfy any number of requirements at design and off-design conditions
