    Delivery Time Reduction for Order-Constrained Applications using Binary Network Codes

    Consider a radio access network wherein a base-station is required to deliver a set of order-constrained messages to a set of users over independent erasure channels. This paper studies the delivery time reduction problem using instantly decodable network coding (IDNC). Motivated by time-critical and order-constrained applications, the delivery time is defined, at each transmission, as the number of undelivered messages. The delivery time minimization problem being computationally intractable, most of the existing literature on IDNC propose sub-optimal online solutions. This paper suggests a novel method for solving the problem by introducing the delivery delay as a measure of distance to optimality. An expression characterizing the delivery time using the delivery delay is derived, allowing the approximation of the delivery time minimization problem by an optimization problem involving the delivery delay. The problem is, then, formulated as a maximum weight clique selection problem over the IDNC graph wherein the weight of each vertex reflects its corresponding user and message's delay. Simulation results suggest that the proposed solution achieves lower delivery and completion times as compared to the best-known heuristics for delivery time reduction

    Throughput Maximization in Cloud Radio Access Networks using Network Coding

    This paper is interested in maximizing the total throughput of cloud radio access networks (CRANs) in which multiple radio remote heads (RRHs) are connected to a central computing unit known as the cloud. The transmit frame of each RRH consists of multiple radio resources blocks (RRBs), and the cloud is responsible for synchronizing these RRBS and scheduling them to users. Unlike previous works that consider allocating each RRB to only a single user at each time instance, this paper proposes to mix the flows of multiple users in each RRB using instantly decodable network coding (IDNC). The proposed scheme is thus designed to jointly schedule the users to different RRBs, choose the encoded file sent in each of them, and the rate at which each of them is transmitted. Hence, the paper maximizes the throughput which is defined as the number of correctly received bits. To jointly fulfill this objective, we design a graph in which each vertex represents a possible user-RRB association, encoded file, and transmission rate. By appropriately choosing the weights of vertices, the scheduling problem is shown to be equivalent to a maximum weight clique problem over the newly introduced graph. Simulation results illustrate the significant gains of the proposed scheme compared to classical coding and uncoded solutions.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

    Organic Matter Assessment And Paleoenvironmental Changes Of The Middle Jurassic Main Source Rocks (Khatatba Formation) In The North Western Desert, Egypt: Palynofacies And Palynomorph Perspectives

    The Middle Jurassic in the north Western Desert, Egypt, was a time of complex tectonics and increased environmental perturbations attributed to the predominant sedimentation of organic carbon-rich fine siliciclastic and carbonate deposits of the Khatatba Formation. Although some studies have addressed the hydrocarbon potential and source rock characteristics of the Khatatba Formation, a regional-scale investigation of the prevalent paleoenvironmental conditions and organic matter characteristics is still necessary. In this study, the Khatatba Formation is investigated for detailed palynofacies analysis and palynomorph composition to assess organic matter kerogen types and reconstruct the depositional paleoenvironmental patterns on a regional scale. For this purpose, 116 drill cuttings were collected from five wells in the Matruh, Shushan, and Dahab-Mireir Basins. Moderately diverse assemblages of spores, pollen, and dinoflagellate cysts are reported. Age-diagnostic dinoflagellate cysts, including Adnatosphaeridium caulleryi, Dichadogonyaulax sellwoodii, Korystocysta gochtii, Wanaea acollaris, and Pareodinia ceratophora, along with occasional records of Systematophora areolate and Systematophora penicillate, defined a Bajocian–Callovian age. Based on particulate organic matter (POM) composition, four palynofacies assemblages (PFAs) are identified. PFA-1 is the most common within the Khatatba Formation in the five studied wells. It contains high proportions of phytoclast fragments versus low contents of amorphous organic matter (AOM) and palynomorphs and is defined by a gas-prone kerogen Type III. PFA-2 is comprised of moderate abundances of AOM and phytoclast characteristics of oil-prone kerogen Type II. PFA-3 is dominated by phytoclasts and moderate to low proportions of AOM and palynomorphs of kerogen Type III, whereas PFA-4 consists of AOM and palynomorphs defining kerogen Type II. PFA-1 indicates predominant deposition in proximal active fluvio-deltaic sources to marginal marine conditions with enhanced contributions of terrestrial/riverine influx. PFA-2 and PFA-3 reveal deposition under an enhanced dysoxic to anoxic proximal inner neritic shelf due to the abundant occurrences of spores and coastal to shallow marine dinoflagellate cysts. PFA-4 suggests deposition under enhanced suboxic to anoxic distal inner neritic conditions because of enhanced AOM and abundant proximate and some chorate dinoflagellate cysts. Thus, the Middle Jurassic experienced a predominantly marginal to shallow water column in this part of the southern margin of the Tethyan Ocean where the Matruh, Shushan, and Dahab-Mireir Basins were located

    Biliary duodenostomy: a safe and easier biliary drainage procedure after choledochal cyst excision

    Background/purpose: The treatment of choice for choledochal cyst (CC) is complete excision followed by biliary–enteric anastomosis. Roux-en-Y biliary jejunostomy has been favored by most surgeons for decades, with satisfying results. The use of biliary duodenostomy (BD) is another simple alternative for biliary drainage after CC excision. Our intermediate-term outcomes of both biliary drainage procedures after CC excision are presented.Methods: We carried out a retrospective analysis of the outcome of CC management in children operated at the Pediatric Surgery Department of Ain-Shams University over 5 years, from January 2010.Results: A total of 23 cases (16 females) were included in this study. The mean age at operation was 4.02 ± 2.52 years. Twenty-one cases had type I and two cases had type III CC. Complete excision of the CC was performed in 22 cases, and partial excision with mucosectomy was performed in one case. Biliary–enteric anastomosis was performed with the duodenum in 18 patients (group I, BD) and with the jejunum in five cases (group II, Roux-en-Y biliary jejunostomy). The mean follow-up period was 53± 4.48 months. A patient from group II suffered from ascending cholangitis 6 months postoperatively.Conclusion: BD is a simple technique for biliary drainage after CC excision with no major complications at intermediate-term follow-up.Keywords: biliary obstruction, choledochal cyst, hepaticoduodenostomy, jaundic
