Supersymmetric Model of Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment and Neutrino Masses
We propose the novel lepton-number relationship , which
is uniquely realized by the interaction in supersymmetry and may account for a possibly large
muon anomalous magnetic moment. Neutrino masses (with bimaximal mixing) may be
generated from the spontaneous and soft breaking of this lepton symmetry.Comment: 10 pages, including 2 figure
Analysis of Residual Stresses in Laser-Shock-Peened and Shot-Peened Marine Steel Welds
Laser peening is now the preferred method of surface treatment in many applications. The magnitude and depth of the compressive residual stress induced by laser peening can be influenced strongly by the number of peen layers (the number of laser hits at each point) and by processing conditions including the use of a protective ablative layer. In this study, residual stresses have been characterized in laser and shot-peened marine butt welds with a particular focus at the fatigue crack initiation location at the weld toe. X-ray diffraction, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, incremental center-hole drilling, and the contour method were used for determination of residual stress. Results showed that the use of ablative tape increased the surface compressive stress, and the depth of compressive stress increased with an increase in number of peening layers. A key result is that variation of residual stress profile across laser peen spots was seen, and the residual stress magnitude varies between the center and edges of the spots
Suppressing the and neutrino masses by a superconformal force
The idea of Nelson and Strassler to obtain a power law suppression of
parameters by a superconformal force is applied to understand the smallness of
the parameter and neutrino masses in R-parity violating supersymmetric
standard models. We find that the low-energy sector should contain at least
another pair of Higgs doublets, and that a suppression of \lsim O(10^{-13})
for the parameter and neutrino masses can be achieved generically. The
superpotential of the low-energy sector happens to possess an anomaly-free
discrete R-symmetry, either or , which naturally suppresses certain
lepton-flavor violating processes, the neutrinoless double beta decays and also
the electron electric dipole moment. We expect that the escape energy of the
superconformal sector is \lsim O(10) TeV so that this sector will be
observable at LHC. Our models can accommodate to a large mixing among neutrinos
and give the same upper bound of the lightest Higgs mass as the minimal
supersymmetric standard model.Comment: 24 page
Frequency behavior of Raman coupling coefficient in glasses
Low-frequency Raman coupling coefficient of 11 different glasses is
evaluated. It is found that the coupling coefficient demonstrates a universal
linear frequency behavior near the boson peak maximum and a superlinear
behavior at very low frequencies. The last observation suggests vanishing of
the coupling coefficient when frequency tends to zero. The results are
discussed in terms of the vibration wavefunction that combines features of
localized and extended modes.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure
Status of a Supersymmetric Flavour Violating Solution to the Solar Neutrino Puzzle with Three Generations
We present a general study of a three neutrino flavour transition model based
on the supersymmetric interactions which violate R-parity. These interactions
induce flavour violating scattering reactions between solar matter and
neutrinos. The model does not contain any vacuum mass or mixing angle for the
first generation neutrino. Instead, the effective mixing in the first
generation is induced via the new interactions. The model provides a natural
interpretation of the atmospheric neutrino anomaly, and is consistent with
reactor experiments. We determine all R-parity violating couplings which can
contribute to the effective neutrino oscillations, and summarize the present
laboratory bounds. Independent of the specific nature of the (supersymmetric)
flavour violating model, the experimental data on the solar neutrino rates and
the recoil electron energy spectrum are inconsistent with the theoretical
predictions. The confidence level of the -analysis ranges between and . The incompatibility, is due to the new SNO
results, and excludes the present model. We conclude that a non-vanishing
vacuum mixing angle for the first generation neutrino is necessary in our
model. We expect this also to apply to the solutions based on other flavour
violating interactions having constraints of the same order of magnitude.Comment: 17 pages, Latex fil
A Beta Beam complex based on the machine upgrades for the LHC
The Beta Beam CERN design is based on the present LHC injection complex and
its physics reach is mainly limited by the maximum rigidity of the SPS. In
fact, some of the scenarios for the machine upgrades of the LHC, particularly
the construction of a fast cycling 1 TeV injector (``Super-SPS''), are very
synergic with the construction of a higher Beta Beam. At the energies
that can be reached by this machine, we demonstrate that dense calorimeters can
already be used for the detection of at the far location. Even at
moderate masses (40 kton) as the ones imposed by the use of existing
underground halls at Gran Sasso, the CP reach is very large for any value of
that would provide evidence of appearance at T2K or
NOA (). Exploitation of matter effects at the
CERN to Gran Sasso distance provides sensitivity to the neutrino mass hierarchy
in significant areas of the plane
Bcl-2 suppresses sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca21-ATPase expression in cystic fibrosis airways role in oxidant-mediated cell death
Rationale: Modulation of the activity of sarcoendoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase (SERCA) can profoundly affect Ca2+ homeostasis. Although altered calcium homeostasis is a characteristic of cystic fibrosis (CF), the role of SERCA is unknown. Objectives: This study provides a comprehensive investigation of expression and activity of SERCA in CF airway epithelium. A detailed study of the mechanisms underlying SERCA changes and its consequences was also undertaken. Methods: Lung tissue samples (bronchus and bronchiole) from subjects with and without CF were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Protein and mRNA expression in primary non-CF and CF cells was determined by Western and Northern blots. Measurements and Main Results: SERCA2 expression was decreased in bronchial and bronchiolar epithelia of subjects with CF. SERCA2 expression in lysates of polarized tracheobronchial epithelial cells from subjects with CF was decreased by 67% as compared with those from subjects without CF. Several non-CF and CF airway epithelial cell lines were also probed. SERCA2 expression and activity were consistently decreased in CF cell lines. Adenoviral expression of mutant F508 cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator gene (CFTR), inhibition of CFTR function pharmacologically (CFTRinh172), or stable expression of antisense oligonucleotides to inhibit CFTR expression caused decreased SERCA2 expression. In CF cells, SERCA2 interacted with Bcl-2, leading to its displacement from caveolae-related domains of endoplasmic reticulum membranes, as demonstrated in sucrose density gradient centrifugation and immunoprecipitation studies. Knockdown of SERCA2 using siRNA enhanced epithelial cell death due to ozone, hydrogen peroxide, and TNF-α. Conclusions: Reduced SERCA2 expression may alter calcium signaling and apoptosis in CF. These findings decrease the likelihood of therapeutic benefit of SERCA inhibition in CF
Enhanced T-odd P-odd Electromagnetic Moments in Reflection Asymmetric Nuclei
Collective P- and T- odd moments produced by parity and time invariance
violating forces in reflection asymmetric nuclei are considered. The enhanced
collective Schiff, electric dipole and octupole moments appear due to the
mixing of rotational levels of opposite parity. These moments can exceed
single-particle moments by more than two orders of magnitude. The enhancement
is due to the collective nature of the intrinsic moments and the small energy
separation between members of parity doublets. In turn these nuclear moments
induce enhanced T- and P- odd effects in atoms and molecules. First a simple
estimate is given and then a detailed theoretical treatment of the collective
T-, P- odd electric moments in reflection asymmetric, odd-mass nuclei is
presented and various corrections evaluated. Calculations are performed for
octupole deformed long-lived odd-mass isotopes of Rn, Fr, Ra, Ac and Pa and the
corresponding atoms. Experiments with such atoms may improve substantially the
limits on time reversal violation.Comment: 28 pages, Revte
