Distribution Of Attempted Leader With Monsoon Seasons And Negative Cloud-To-Ground Flashes In Melaka, Malaysia

    Get PDF
Ninety (90) waveforms recognized as attempted leader were identified with both positive (84 events) and negative (6 events) initial polarity observed from four consecutive years of data (N=10,206). The positive attempted leader shows no correlation with the number of thunderstorms producing it during monsoon. Meanwhile, the negative attempted leader during monsoon and both polarity of attempted leader (positive and negative) during inter-monsoon shows positive correlation with the number of thunderstorms producing it. In this study, the yearly statistical distribution of negative cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flashes which were classified as positive preliminary breakdown pulses (214 events) and negative preliminary breakdown pulses (4982 events) in accordance of their preliminary polarity were also presented. In addition, there is no relationship of attempted leader and the initial breakdown of negative ground flash since both mechanisms performed as a negative correlation

Comparison Study Of Energy Efficiency Activities Programs Among The Selected Region And Countries: Lessons Learned For Malaysia

    Get PDF
This study reviews the contemporary tendencies in energy efficiency performance in chosen regions and countries. It also reviews the energy efficiency strategies and activities accomplished in these countries which pursue the program of reduction in energy consumption while maintaining the comfort level. These become the objectives and today’s energy efficiency requirement. This study also aims to highlight these activities and the outcomes of the energy efficiency implementation. The extent of this action and its effectiveness is being ascertained. The indicator used to evaluate the Energy Efficiency activities is the Energy Intensity Indicator which is provided by International Energy Agency (IEA). The reports and measurements of the International Energy Agency (IEA) are considered in order to make comparison among the selected countries. The main reason of focus on Energy Intensity levels is because this indicator reflects the result of all activities in different sectors and make sense which country has fulfilled the requirement of Energy Efficiency. The regions and countries are selected on the basis that their level of achievement in the energy efficiency programs are high. However, comparison is still made because each region and country has different emphasis and focus. Despite that Malaysia is a developing country, the achievement towards satisfactory energy efficiency implementation can be considered as encouraging and can only advance further if energy efficiency practice in these selected countries will be learned

Cloud-To-Ground Lightning Flashes Under The Influence Of Pollution In Malaysia And Some Countries

The effect of air pollution produced from world war, industrial activities and transportation clearly can change the earth ecology system such as the atmospheric conditions. Base on few studies reported from by researcher in USA, Brazil, Spain and South Korea researcher have proven that the pollution effect can enhance the activity of lightning. Those information above motivate Advanced Multidisciplinary System Technology researcher in UTeM to report the cloud-to-ground lightning flashes in Malaysia the influence of pollution. Particulate Matter (PM10) and Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) concentration were used as gross indicator of Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN) and examined in relation to the urban increase in CG lightning activity. PM10 concentration recorded in Subang, Ipoh and Bayan Lepas were 51, 50 and 49μgm/m³ respectively. Meanwhile, SO2 concentration recorded were 8, 7.9, 7.7μgm/m³. The three urban areas have average number of CG lightning flashes of 200, 197 and 184. An analysis related number of CG flashes against pollutants show positive correlation in Malaysia with reading of 0.94. This indicates PM10 and SO2 concentration have high influential factor in enhancement of CG lightning activity in Malaysia

The concept of permeance is used in the analysis of flux linkage of 6/4 SRM. The aim of this paper is to develop an efficient algorithm exploiting the nonlinear feature of the 6/4 SRM using the aforementioned concept of permeance. The first step is to generate the relevant equations related to permeances of the 6/4 SRM under study. The 6/4 SRM’s magnetization curve is then derived from the summation of mmf drops at various blocks representing the motor. The air gap permeances are derived at various angles and 3-D leakage effects are taken into account. These permeances are used for the mmf drop computation. The algorithm is capable of efficiently computing mmf drop at every block to consequently yield a complete accurate nonlinear flux linkage feature of the 6/4 switched reluctance motor. In this way, the capability of the SRM to produce the expected four times the specific output torque due to operation in high saturation region compared to an equivalent induction motor as special the attribute of the SRM is demonstrated

This paper expounds a software development for the identification of lightning discharged in cloud-to-ground flashes. The study was to reduce a misleading detection of the electric field radiation of lightning discharged profile by considering the important parameters of sub microseconds structure of lightning`s first return stroke. The software built in MATLAB.The software development considered the important parameters of the first return strokes such as peak value, zero crossing, rising time and fast transition time. This study used a modelling technique for training and patterning 19 return strokes from electric radiation field generated by the negative cloud-ground lightning flashes recorded in Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka.19 return strokes data were recorded by using Lecoy HDO4024 with 5 MS/s.The results showed the software recognized the lightning parameters such as peak value, zero crossing, rising time and fast transition time.In conclusion, the software had the potential to decreases the misleading detection of the electric field radiation generated by negative cloud-to-ground lightning flashes

The growth of the communication system has been progressing rapidly and it provides facility in data acquisition system which can be remotely monitored via internet which so called Internet of Thing (IoT). In this project, a mini hybrid automation system is built and aims to produce energy for home appliances distributor. Circuit of the solar charger adapters available in the market will be carried out and the controller is able to distribute energy to all applications in the home. Research and analysis on the charger, solar and electric generator available in the market need for modification of the circuit. This project also includes research in solar charger, generator and the means of modification of the circuit. A standby generator is a back-up electrical system that operates automatically. Within seconds of a utility outage an automatic transfer switch senses the power loss, commands the generator to start and then transfers the electrical load to the generator. The standby generator begins supplying power to the circuits. The system with cost-effective control system based on Arduino as a microcontroller and TP-Link MR3020 for wireless internet communication with open source OpenWrt embedded firmware and all the operations can be monitored through web interface

Ge-Rich SiGe Thin Film Deposition By Co-Sputtering In In-Situ And Ex-Situ Solid Phase Crystallization For Photovoltaic Applications

This study investigates the properties of high Ge content silicon-germanium thin films in the non-hydrogenated state (Ge-rich SiGe) deposited on glass by RF magnetron co-sputtering in both in-situ and ex-situ solid phase crystallization (SPC) at various temperatures, such as RT to 550 °C. The structural and optical characteristics of SiGe films have been explored systematically by optimizing growth temperature. Atomic composition of films was determined by EDX, which showed up to 77 at% of Ge. Structural properties were characterized by XRD, which revealed all samples to be in amorphous nature. The results from Raman and UV–VIS–IR transmittance measurements showed that the properties of amorphous Si0.23Ge0.77 films improved at 450 °C in both in-situ and ex-situ SPC processes. In addition, EDX exposed an advantage of in-situ process over ex-situ due to the incorporation of oxygen during ex-situ thermal annealing. Possible deposition at low substrate temperature as found here suggests that these Si0.23Ge0.77 films have a substantial potential to be used in thin film Si-based solar cells
