A MULTIATTRIBUTE UTILITY ANALYSIS OF TECHNOLOGICAL CHOICE IN THE CALIFORNIA WILD RICE INDUSTRY

    Get PDF
Technological choice and competitive strategy issues are reviewed and then a framework for choosing between two competing technologies is proposed. The two competing technologies differ in their ability to store and process wild rice over a marketing year. The traditional technologies requires almost immediate processing of the harvested wild rice while the experimental technology allows harvested wild rice to be stored and processed over the course of the marketing year. Technological choice is explored using multiattribute utility analysis and two economic evaluations. The economic evaluations are payback period analysis and internal rate of return analysis given uncertain demand conditions. The experimental technology is shown to be the dominant technological choice under both multiattribute utility analysis and the economic analyses.Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,

An Analysis of the Tradeoffs between Policy Instruments to Induce Dairy Producers in California to Participate in a Centralized Digester

    Get PDF
Tradeoff between different utility rates and policy intervention to induce dairy producer to join a regional digester are studied. Results demonstrate that a regional digester for the dairy industry in California is feasible given the digester receives 0.05perkWhandgovernmentinterventionor0.05 per kWh and government intervention or 0.0925 per kWh with no intervention.Agricultural and Food Policy, Livestock Production/Industries,

Variation within the Krapina Frontal Sample and a Descriptive Note on the Newly Associated Frontal Specimen, Kr 27–28

The Hrvatsko Zagorje region of Croatia has yielded numerous, important Paleolithic finds. Most prominent among these are the Neandertal fossils from Krapina Rockshelter. These fossils have proven to be a rich source of data for testing hypotheses about Neandertal evolution, adaptation, and behavior. This study reports on an analysis of sex-related sample bias within the Krapina frontal sample as well as individual sex identifications for select Krapina frontal specimens. Krapina samples for two supraorbital variables exhibit a probable overrepresentation of females, while a much smaller sample for a third supraorbital variable exhibits a probable overrepresentation of males. Following from the analysis of sex-related sample bias, probability-based sex estimation were possible for nine of the Krapina frontals. This paper also describes a newly associated frontal bone from level 4, Kr 27–28. This specimen comprises the central squama, frontal sinus, and right supraorbital portions of the frontal bone. The specimen is adult and likely male

A Case Study Comparing the Price of Fresh Produce Sold at Farmers’ Markets and Chain Supermarkets

This exploratory research found that produce purchased at San Luis Obispo County, California farmers’ markets to be an apparent better value than supermarket produce. Prices for most commodities were either the same or lower and the product quality was better at times than the same product offered at the paired supermarket. Fourteen commodities were examined at six farmers’ markets locations, over half of those in the county, conducted across all four seasons in 1999

Is The Late Neandertal Mandibular Sample from Vindija Cave (Croatia) Biased?

    Get PDF
The late Neandertal sample from Vindija (Croatia) has been described as transitional between the earlier Central European Neandertals from Krapina (Croatia) and modern humans. However, the morphological differences indicating this transition may rather be the result of different sex and/or age compositions between the samples. This study tests the hypothesis that the metric differences between the Krapina and Vindija mandibular samples are due to sample bias. Mandibles are the focus of this paper because past studies have posited this region as particularly indicative of the Vindija sample’s transitional nature. The results indicate that the metric differences between the Krapina and Vindija mandibular samples are not due to sample bias. This conclusion is consistent with an earlier analysis of sample bias for the Vindija supraorbital sample
