Signal modeling of high-purity Ge detectors with a small read-out electrode and application to neutrinoless double beta decay search in Ge-76
The GERDA experiment searches for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Ge-76
using high-purity germanium detectors enriched in Ge-76. The analysis of the
signal time structure provides a powerful tool to identify neutrinoless double
beta decay events and to discriminate them from gamma-ray induced backgrounds.
Enhanced pulse shape discrimination capabilities of "Broad Energy Germanium"
detectors with a small read-out electrode have been recently reported. This
paper describes the full simulation of the response of such a detector,
including the Monte Carlo modeling of radiation interaction and subsequent
signal shape calculation. A pulse shape discrimination method based on the
ratio between the maximum current signal amplitude and the event energy applied
to the simulated data shows quantitative agreement with the experimental data
acquired with calibration sources. The simulation has been used to study the
survival probabilities of the decays which occur inside the detector volume and
are difficult to assess experimentally. Such internal decay events are produced
by the cosmogenic radio-isotopes Ge-68 and Co-60 and the neutrinoless double
beta decay of Ge-76. Fixing the experimental acceptance of the double escape
peak of the 2.614 MeV photon to 90%, the estimated survival probabilities at
Qbb = 2.039 MeV are (86+-3)% for Ge-76 neutrinoless double beta decays,
(4.5+-0.3)% for the Ge-68 daughter Ga-68, and (0.9+0.4-0.2)% for Co-60 decays.Comment: 27 pages, 17 figures. v2: fixed typos and references. Submitted to

Questa esperienza ha avuto luogo in Inghilterra, in Somerset, presso i giardini di Hester-
combe. In questo contesto il nostro obiettivo era quello di verificare se l\u2019utilizzo guidato
di una App di realt\ue0 mista/aumentata, unita ad una corretta metodologia didattica e con
un affiancamento di una guida, possa aiutare gli studenti di classi delle scuole primarie
e secondarie a migliorare l\u2019apprendimento dei contenuti storici, artistici e culturali del
giardino. Nel paper viene presentata la fase di sviluppo tecnico dell\u2019interfaccia della App
e la sua successiva sperimentazione. Dalle prime verifiche sul campo, emerge come il
processo di interazione tra Studente/App/Guida sia significativamente pi\uf9 efficace sia
nella dimensione dell\u2019attenzione che in quella della memorizzazione dei contenuti ri-
spetto ad un utilizzo della App senza alcuna interazione
The nonrelativistic limit of the Magueijo-Smolin model of deformed special relativity
We study the nonrelativistic limit of the motion of a classical particle in a
model of deformed special relativity and of the corresponding generalized
Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations, and show that they reproduce nonrelativistic
classical and quantum mechanics, respectively, although the rest mass of a
particle no longer coincides with its inertial mass. This fact clarifies the
meaning of the different definitions of velocity of a particle available in DSR
literature. Moreover, the rest mass of particles and antiparticles differ,
breaking the CPT invariance. This effect is close to observational limits and

Twenty-seven years follow-up of a patient with congenital retinocephalofacial vascular malformation syndrome and additional congenital malformations (Bonnet-Dechaume-Blanc syndrome or Wyburn-Mason syndrome)
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Purpose</p> <p>Follow-up of vascular changes in a patient with congenital retinocephalofacial vascular malformation syndrome.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>MRI and cerebral angiography.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In a 36-year-old man, magnetic resonance im aging of the skull and cerebral angiography revealed left intracranial arteriovenous malformations. Follow-up observation of 27 years revealed no essential change of retinal and cerebral arteriovenous malformations. Additional congenital deficits in this patient were described.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Patients with retinal arteriovenous malformations should be early examined with neuroradiological methods.</p
Aprotic sulfur-metal batteries: lithium and beyond
Metal-sulfur batteries constitute an extraordinary research playground that ranges from fundamental science to applied technologies. However, besides the widely explored Li-S system, a remarkable lack of understanding hinders advancements and performance in all other metal-sulfur systems. In fact, similarities and differences make all generalizations highly inconsistent, thus unavoidably suggesting the need for extensive research explorations for each formulation. Here we review critically the most remarkable open challenges that still hinder the full development of metal-S battery formulations, starting from the lithium benchmark and addressing Na, K, Mg, and Ca metal systems. Our aim is to draw an updated picture of the recent efforts in the field and to shed light on the most promising innovation paths that can pave the way to breakthroughs in the fundamental comprehension of these systems or in battery performance
The MGDO software library for data analysis in Ge neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments
The GERDA and Majorana experiments will search for neutrinoless double-beta
decay of germanium-76 using isotopically enriched high-purity germanium
detectors. Although the experiments differ in conceptual design, they share
many aspects in common, and in particular will employ similar data analysis
techniques. The collaborations are jointly developing a C++ software library,
MGDO, which contains a set of data objects and interfaces to encapsulate, store
and manage physical quantities of interest, such as waveforms and high-purity
germanium detector geometries. These data objects define a common format for
persistent data, whether it is generated by Monte Carlo simulations or an
experimental apparatus, to reduce code duplication and to ease the exchange of
information between detector systems. MGDO also includes general-purpose
analysis tools that can be used for the processing of measured or simulated
digital signals. The MGDO design is based on the Object-Oriented programming
paradigm and is very flexible, allowing for easy extension and customization of
the components. The tools provided by the MGDO libraries are used by both GERDA

Quantum superposition principle and generation of ultrashort optical pulses
We discuss the propagation of laser radiation through a medium of quantum
prepared {\Lambda}-type atoms in order to enhance the insight into the physics
of QS-PT generator suggested in Phys. Rev. A 80, 035801 (2009). We obtain
analytical results which give a qualitatively corerct description of the
outcoming series of ultrashort optical pulses and show that for the case of
alkali vapor medium QS-PT generation may be implemented under ordinary
experimental conditions
