    Photo-emission properties of quasi-one-dimensional conductors

We calculate the self-energy of one-dimensional electron band with the three-dimensional long range Coulomb interaction within the random phase approximation, paying particular attention to the contribution coming from the electron scatterings on the collective plasmon mode. It is shown that the spectral density has a form of wide feature at thr frequency scale of the plasmon frequency, without the presence of quasi-particle delta-peaks. The relevance of this result with respect to experimental findings and to the theory of Luttinger liquids is discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

Influence of radial depth of cut on entry conditions and dynamics in face milling application

    No full text
In this study, acceleration of the workpiece is measured for different radial depths of cut and cutting edge geometries. The influence of the radial depth of cut on the dynamical behavior is evaluated in time and frequency domains. The results for different radial depths of cut and cutting geometries are quantified using the root mean square value of acceleration. The outcome of this research study can be used both for the better cutting data recommendations and improved tool design. Implications of climate change for shipping: Ports and supply chains

Ports are an important economic actor—at local, national, and international scales—that have been identified as being vulnerable to future changes to the climate. This paper details the findings from an international review of state‐of‐the‐art knowledge concerning climate risks, and adaptation responses, for ports and their supply chains. Evidence from both academic and gray literature indicates that there has already been major damage and disruption to ports across the world from climate‐related hazards and that such impacts are projected to increase in the years and decades to come. Findings indicate that while a substantial—and growing—body of scientific evidence on coastal risks and potential adaptation options is acting as a stimulus for port authorities to explicitly consider the risks for their assets and operations, only a notable few have actually made the next step toward implementing adaptation strategies. This paper concludes by putting forward constructive recommendations for the sector and suggestions for research to address remaining knowledge gaps. It emphasizes a call for collaboration between the research and practice communities, as well as the need to engage a broad range of stakeholders in the adaptation planning process

Nature-Based Equity: An Assessment of the Public Health Impacts of Green Infrastructure in Ontario Canada

    No full text
The built environment is a physical determinant of health essential to the planning and development of a more equitable society. Communities face growing challenges due to environmental stressors such as climate change, with vulnerable communities experiencing a disproportionate burden of adverse health outcomes. The interdependencies between urban planning and public health outcomes are inextricable, with respect to improving access to healthier built environments for vulnerable and marginalized groups. Widespread implementation of nature-based solutions, such as green infrastructure, provides a multi-functional strategy to support sustainable development, increase climate resilience, enhance ecological connectivity, and create healthier communities. A Health Equity Impact Assessment presents the findings of a participatory research study utilizing key informant interviews of public health unit professionals (eight) and a survey of green infrastructure volunteers and workers (36) on the impact of green infrastructure on individual and community mental and physical well-being, service use, and perceived unmet needs, using Ontario, Canada as a case study. Study findings indicate that where green infrastructure is both productive and publicly accessible, the benefits were significant for vulnerable populations. These benefits include increased social connectivity, skills development, and food security. Green infrastructure could be a viable strategy to address environmental stressors, improve health equity, and support localization of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Modeling of Force Build-up Process and Optimization of Tool Geometry when Intermittent Turning

    No full text
Intermittent turning the slotted workpieces is always accompanied with a high impact load of the machine tool during the entry phase of the cutting edge. The process leads to a strong dynamic response of the system and results in vibrations arose and potential tool life and surface finish issues. The present study addresses the modeling of cutting force build-up process with further optimization of cutting edge geometry where tooltip overshoot during the tool entry is selected as an objective function. The model takes into consideration the interaction between three units of the machine tool such as a tool, toolpost, and workpiece as well as an influence of the process on the system's dynamics
