Zur Rolle des Designs in kulturspezifischen Alters- und Pflegeeinrichtungen

Culture-specific care facilities for the elderly in Switzerland – so-called „Mediterranean“ care facilites – offer a home for elderly women and men from the Mediterranean region. Most of them came as labor migrants to Switzerland in the 1950s to 1970s from Italy and Spain. In the future elderly immigrants are originated from diverse countries and continents. It is controversial among experts whether these culture-specific care models can be transferred to these population groups. They rather plead for a transcultural shift in regular care facilities. This begs the question, how the design of the environment can contribute to this shift. The dissertation examines the design of the environment of so-called 'Mediterranean' care facilities and explains which factors are positively evaluated by the residents or have a positive impact on their well-being. The focus is on the one hand on the design of the spatial environment (both common and private spaces) and on the other hand on service design, which also includes the socio-cultural programs of these culture-specific facilities. Finally, the dissertation shows which design factors contribute to a culturally sensitive environment in nursing homes

Wie kann Design zu einer altersfreundlicheren Gesundheitsgrundversorgung beitragen?

In den letzten Jahren hat das Interesse an gestalterischen Aspekten im Gesundheitskontext zugenommen. Dies zeigt sich unter anderem in einem zunehmenden Bewusstsein der Gesundheitsinstitutionen für die Relevanz von Design und Architektur. In der Pandemie wurde dies besonders sichtbar – gerade in Bezug auf ältere Menschen. Bei der Gestaltung von Kommunikationsmitteln, Produkten, räumlichen Umgebungen und Angeboten für die Gesundheitsversorgung älterer Menschen ist Folgendes wichtig: die Berücksichtigung wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse (evidenzbasiertes Design) und der frühzeitige Einbezug relevanter Ansprechgruppen in den Designprozess. Dabei gilt es zu beachten, dass die primäre Ansprechgruppe, nämlich ältere Menschen, nicht weniger heterogen ist als die übrige Bevölkerung.Ces dernières années, l’intérêt pour les aspects conceptuels dans le contexte de la santé s’est accru. Cela se traduit notamment par des institutions de santé de plus en plus conscientes de la pertinence du design et de l’architecture. Cela a été particulièrement visible lors de la pandémie, notamment en ce qui concerne les personnes âgées. Lors de la conception de moyens de communication, de produits, d’environnements spatiaux et d’offres pour les soins de santé des personnes âgées, il est important de tenir compte des connaissances scientifiques (evidence-based design) et d’impliquer suffisamment tôt les différents interlocuteurs dans le processus de conception. En outre, il convient de garder à l’esprit que les personnes âgées, qui constituent les premières personnes concernées, ne sont pas moins hétérogènes que le reste de la population

Since the beginning of the pandemic social media, poster campaigns by international advertising agencies and, last but not least, art have featured images of health workers as superheroes. These pictures are intended to pay tribute to the so-called ‘everyday heroes’ for their ‘fight’ against the invisible ‘enemy’ Covid-19. Design for Health Care

Today’s healthcare system is permeated with design questions: To what extent does the spatial environment contribute to patient ag-gression? How can people with dementia better orient themselves in the hospital? How can communication between nurses and foreign-language patients be improved? Or: How must an intensive care unit be designed to support staff’s work processes? In order to be able to answer these complex questions, knowledge and competences from different fields are needed. The lecture will give an overview of evidence-based design in health contexts and show how interprofessional collaboration between re-searchers from different fields, such as design, architecture and nurs-ing can work. It will address both the potential and challenges of in-terdisciplinary research using concrete project examples. At the newly founded Swiss Center for Design and Health (SCDH), knowledge and research competences of different disciplines are used to answer complex questions in healthcare and to come up with innovative solu-tions

Wenn Kinder sterben

Im bernischen Riedbach soll ab 2022 das erste Kinderhospiz der Schweiz entstehen. Hier sollen künftig Kinder mit lebenslimitierenden Erkrankungen und deren Familien betreut und unterstützt werden.
