No Eigenvalue in Finite Quantum Electrodynamics
We re-examine Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) with massless electron as a
finite quantum field theory as advocated by Gell-Mann-Low, Baker-Johnson,
Adler, Jackiw and others. We analyze the Dyson-Schwinger equation satisfied by
the massless electron in finite QED and conclude that the theory admits no
nontrivial eigenvalue for the fine structure constant.Comment: 13 pages, Late
Nuclear modification at sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3 GeV, measured at NA49
Transverse momentum spectra up to 4.5 GeV/c were measured around midrapidity
in Pb+Pb reactions at sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3 GeV, for pi^{+/-}, p, pbar and K^{+/-},
by the NA49 experiment. The nuclear modification factors R_{AA}, R_{AA/pA} and
R_{CP} were extracted and are compared to RHIC results at sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV.
The modification factor R_{AA} shows a rapid increase with transverse momentum
in the covered region. The modification factor R_{CP} shows saturation well
below unity in the pi^{+/-} channel. The extracted R_{CP} values follow the 200
GeV RHIC results closely in the available transverse momentum range for all
particle species. For pi^{+/-} above 2.5 GeV/c transverse momentum, the
measured suppression is smaller than that observed at RHIC. The nuclear
modification factor R_{AA/pA} for pi^{+/-} stays well below unity.Comment: Proceedings of Quark Matter 2008 conferenc
Correction-to-scaling exponent for two-dimensional percolation
We show that the correction-to-scaling exponents in two-dimensional
percolation are bounded by Omega <= 72/91, omega = D Omega <= 3/2, and Delta_1
= nu omega <= 2, based upon Cardy's result for the critical crossing
probability on an annulus. The upper bounds are consistent with many previous
measurements of site percolation on square and triangular lattices, and new
measurements for bond percolation presented here, suggesting this result is
exact. A scaling form evidently applicable to site percolation is also found
The Kepler problem and non commutativity
We investigate the Kepler problem using a symplectic structure consistent
with the commutation rules of the noncommutative quantum mechanics. We show
that a noncommutative parameter of the order of gives
observable corrections to the movement of the solar system. In this way,
modifications in the physics of smaller scales implies modifications at large
scales, something similar to the UV/IR mixing.Comment: 10 page
Billiard algebra, integrable line congruences, and double reflection nets
The billiard systems within quadrics, playing the role of discrete analogues
of geodesics on ellipsoids, are incorporated into the theory of integrable
quad-graphs. An initial observation is that the Six-pointed star theorem, as
the operational consistency for the billiard algebra, is equivalent to an
integrabilty condition of a line congruence. A new notion of the
double-reflection nets as a subclass of dual Darboux nets associated with
pencils of quadrics is introduced, basic properies and several examples are
presented. Corresponding Yang-Baxter maps, associated with pencils of quadrics

Photon Splitting in a Very Strong Magnetic Field
Photon splitting in a very strong magnetic field is analyzed for energy
. The amplitude obtained on the base of operator-diagram technique
is used. It is shown that in a magnetic field much higher than critical one the
splitting amplitude is independent on the field. Our calculation is in a good
agreement with previous results of Adler and in a strong contradiction with

The invertebrate Caenorhabditis elegans biosynthesizes ascorbate.
l-Ascorbate, commonly known as vitamin C, serves as an antioxidant and cofactor essential for many biological processes. Distinct ascorbate biosynthetic pathways have been established for animals and plants, but little is known about the presence or synthesis of this molecule in invertebrate species. We have investigated ascorbate metabolism in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, where this molecule would be expected to play roles in oxidative stress resistance and as cofactor in collagen and neurotransmitter synthesis. Using high-performance liquid chromatography and gas-chromatography mass spectrometry, we determined that ascorbate is present at low amounts in the egg stage, L1 larvae, and mixed animal populations, with the egg stage containing the highest concentrations. Incubating C. elegans with precursor molecules necessary for ascorbate synthesis in plants and animals did not significantly alter ascorbate levels. Furthermore, bioinformatic analyses did not support the presence in C. elegans of either the plant or the animal biosynthetic pathway. However, we observed the complete (13)C-labeling of ascorbate when C. elegans was grown with (13)C-labeled Escherichia coli as a food source. These results support the hypothesis that ascorbate biosynthesis in invertebrates may proceed by a novel pathway and lay the foundation for a broader understanding of its biological role
Reduction of Soil-Borne Plant Pathogens Using Lime and Ammonia Evolved from Broiler Litter
In laboratory and micro-plots simulations and in a commercial greenhouse, soil ammonia (NH3) and pH were manipulated as means to control soil-borne fungal pathogens and nematodes. Soil ammonification capacity was increased by applying low C/N ratio broiler litter at 1–8% (w/w). Soil pH was increased using lime at 0.5–1% (w/w). This reduced fungi (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi and Sclerotium rolfsii) and root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne javanica) in lab tests below detection. In a commercial greenhouse, broiler litter (25 Mg ha−1) and lime (12.5 Mg ha−1) addition to soil in combination with solarization significantly reduced M. javanica induced root galling of tomato test plants from 47% in the control plots (solarization only) to 7% in treated plots. Root galling index of pepper plants, measured 178 days after planting in the treated and control plots, were 0.8 and 1.5, respectively, which was statistically significantly different. However, the numbers of nematode juveniles in the root zone soil counted 83 and 127 days after pepper planting were not significantly different between treatments. Pepper fruit yield was not different between treatments. Soil disinfection and curing was completed within one month, and by the time of bell-pepper planting the pH and ammonia values were normal
Ionization dynamics in intense pulsed laser radiation. Effects of frequency chirping
Via a non-perturbative method we study the population dynamics and
photoelectron spectra of Cs atoms subject to intense chirped laser pulses, with
gaussian beams. We include above threshold ionization spectral peaks. The
frequency of the laser is near resonance with the 6s-7p transition. Dominant
couplings are included exactly, weaker ones accounted for perturbatively. We
calculate the relevant transition matrix elements, including spin-orbit
coupling. The pulse is taken to be a hyperbolic secant in time and the chirping
a hyperbolic tangent. This choice allows the equations of motions for the
probability amplitudes to be solved analytically as a series expansion in the
variable u=(tanh(pi t/tau)+1)/2, where tau is a measure of the pulse length. We
find that the chirping changes the ionization dynamics and the photoelectron
spectra noticeably, especially for longer pulses of the order of 10^4 a.u. The
peaks shift and change in height, and interference effects between the 7p
levels are enhanced or diminished according to the amount of chirping and its

Phenomenology of Jet Quenching in Heavy Ion Collisions
We derive an analytical expression for the quenching factor in the strong
quenching limit where the spectrum of hard partons is dominated by
surface emission. We explore the phenomenological consequences of different
scaling laws for the energy loss and calculate the additional suppression of
